• Haha, no love for the Honeywell yet!

  • I have a suggestion: let me capture a couple of my games and make two test video: the first in 4:3, the second in 16:9, and together we take a look and choose which format to use for the final video. Do you agree?

Ok, we'll do that. Though I honestly think there wont be an issue for users to view it on youtube, since a 720p video on there will have a number of lower versions to watch, and nobody should have any trouble viewing it in the lowest setting if they have a slow connection (depending on their settings, it may pick the smallest resolution for them, or highest if they can watch better).

and this one explains what I was saying before, how youtube will add black bars to 4:3

Finally someone says it out loud!

That twisted UI made me leave it to real designers. I'll stick to photoshop, took me long enough to get a grip on that.

Hey! How's things over there now?

  • awesome, nice one!!

  • Let's be honest, there aren't very many quality games Construct can showcase yet, while GM has quite a collection.

Exactly, construct users shouldn't be throwing stones until there's something to back things up with. Last thing we all need is a huge feud between the two camps, we should all be friends.

  • > The amount of stretching is minimal when viewed widescreen. Didn't realize it wasn't 16:9 until I reread your post lol.

    >

    Original 640x480 (4:3)_______Resized 1280x720 (16:9)

I think that the difference is very big, and the second variant looks bad.

Well it is done that way yeah.

I'd probably suggest you have that logo animation redone in 720 then, and the submissions either pillar boxes (which you could maybe fill in with the same gas like effect perhaps?) or straight black. Depends, I made a thread in the open topic section to see what ratio most are using, will give a better idea which to go with once quite a few have voted on the poll there. If the majority is with one or the other, best to go with that I suppose.

    I'm easy either way.

Edit: But I gotta say, seeing it fullscreen on my monitor has made me want to switch entirely to widescreen and to hell with 4:3 users

  • You can make games with Construct. In Game Maker, you can't.

    Don't start a war

  • I've recently made a promo video for Scirra Construct, but it has the standard resolution for games with a window size of 640x480 (4:3). If you decide to make the showreel in 720p, it makes sense to transform the video under a new screen resolution of 1280x720 (16:9) and then you could put it in your showreel (of course, if you like it). Although I don't sure that it will look same impressive in another aspect ratio.

Here is the promo video (exe 2,7mb)

I was going to use this video at the startup of every my game created with Construct to promote the program. But it turned out that it's difficult to move events from one project to another. And AVI Object doesn't work properly in full screen.

P.S. I wrote music specially for this video.

That looks pretty cool. BTW I'm with something I think deadeye mentioned once. The amount of stretching is minimal when viewed widescreen. Didn't realize it wasn't 16:9 until I reread your post lol.

Also I think I once heard of someone using an exe to startup another exe, maybe you could do that to include the intro in each of your games? I thought about something similar only with a settings type exe to startup the main one.

Edit: And since you're the only one who offered to do the vid, and appear to have the talent for it, I think you should, and I think the intro would work perfectly for it, since it is the same as the logo you did for the site

  • An interesting point came up in another thread regarding aspect ratio. So thought I'd make a poll about it, so we could perhaps gauge which aspect the users are using or plan to use.

This is not a thread to complain or beg for changes in construct to better deal with aspect ratio. Do that in the help section, lol. This is just to see which ratio you are using or plan to use for your game or games.

If you happen to be using something other than those in the poll, explain below. I know a few retro games did have curious aspect ratios, so it's always possible someone is doing a game that doesn't follow one of the two "standards".

Edit: And don't turn this into "I looked at Wikipedia, saw the other aspect ratios so am going to try sound clever by saying you missed a load of them", we know there's lots and lots of others and it always ends up on a page about sex.. Incidentally... Aspect Ratio -> Aspect Ratio (image) -> Anamorphic Widescreen -> Star Wars -> Princess Leia Organa -> Carrie Fisher -> When Harry Met Sally -> Fake Orgasm -> Orgasm -> Breasts

    /is bored

  • Yeah, true.. unfortunately it comes down to either the widescreen games lose a part of them, or the none widescreen ones get black bars. Whatever direction is taken, one will suffer, and I think the black bars is the least harmful as nothing gets cut off of anyones videos. I know, it doesn't look very pretty but it's a common issue 4:3 aspect ratio has these days in a 16:9 world.

Could always fill those black bars with a plasma effect (also done in construct, heh) so they're not so dull looking.

Otherwise the problems you listed above could be directed at widescreen games too, so I thought about it before suggesting 720 and figured at least with the black bars, nobody will lose part of their game, it would be the least damaging, avoids zooming (which will spoil some vids), avoids cropping or having to do the whole pan and scan thing, or even shrink the widescreen ones until they've got black bars on the top and bottom. Hmm.. you just gave me an idea actually for a thread!

Oh, before anyone wonders too. The one I was planning to submit would be 1024x768, so the 720 thing isn't some personal preference aimed to make my own look good. It's more to do with the fact that it's going on youtube and that's the format they use for HD and 4:3 aspect ratio is gonna get black bars once it's on there anyway

Course, being aware of that, and knowing we'd be providing video for 16:9 aspect ratio. We could fill in the gaps We'd get otherwise, such as sticking our site urls in there etc. lol.

As for the exe vs video "discussion" that seems to be going on in the thread, I suppose I should explain that. The whole reason I allowed for a choice, was knowing not everyone would be able to record their own games as video. It does take some horsepower to record at a decent framerate, and for those not able to do it, they'd have the alternative with providing an executable instead, so they weren't left out. My personal view would not even be to allow executables (I have major issues with constructs ability to delete files without alerting the user). Video's however, as Mary Jane and Arima have pointed out, would ensure the best bits are seen, and that it'll look exactly how the user intended.

But yeah, only included the option to make it fairer for everyone, sorry if that upset anyone, lol.

  • Nice work!

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • Seconded, make sure -everything- gets installed, or you'll have issues like these. Even if you think you've got it already, let it install again just to be on the safe side. (Goes for both the DX and VB stuff).
