• Changes are though that any widescreen game in it would be 1280x720, thus you'd have to downscale them if you do eg. 800x600 or 640x480 video. It'd be a better idea to upscale the 4:3 games to 960x720 with black bars to go with the 1280x720 clips.

  • I've recently made a promo video for Scirra Construct, but it has the standard resolution for games with a window size of 640x480 (4:3). If you decide to make the showreel in 720p, it makes sense to transform the video under a new screen resolution of 1280x720 (16:9) and then you could put it in your showreel (of course, if you like it). Although I don't sure that it will look same impressive in another aspect ratio.

Here is the promo video (exe 2,7mb)

I was going to use this video at the startup of every my game created with Construct to promote the program. But it turned out that it's difficult to move events from one project to another. And AVI Object doesn't work properly in full screen.

P.S. I wrote music specially for this video.

That looks pretty cool. BTW I'm with something I think deadeye mentioned once. The amount of stretching is minimal when viewed widescreen. Didn't realize it wasn't 16:9 until I reread your post lol.

Also I think I once heard of someone using an exe to startup another exe, maybe you could do that to include the intro in each of your games? I thought about something similar only with a settings type exe to startup the main one.

Edit: And since you're the only one who offered to do the vid, and appear to have the talent for it, I think you should, and I think the intro would work perfectly for it, since it is the same as the logo you did for the site

    Original 640x480 (4:3)_______Resized 1280x720 (16:9)

I think that the difference is very big, and the second variant looks bad.

  • Yeah, let's not squash the cog folks

Well it is done that way yeah.

I'd probably suggest you have that logo animation redone in 720 then, and the submissions either pillar boxes (which you could maybe fill in with the same gas like effect perhaps?) or straight black. Depends, I made a thread in the open topic section to see what ratio most are using, will give a better idea which to go with once quite a few have voted on the poll there. If the majority is with one or the other, best to go with that I suppose.

    I'm easy either way.

Edit: But I gotta say, seeing it fullscreen on my monitor has made me want to switch entirely to widescreen and to hell with 4:3 users

  • Dear god.... this is why we need a way to build projects using external layout files!

I realise it's probably impossible for Construct 1.0 but do consider it for 2.0....

  • My monitor is 16:9, but all games I always make in 4:3, because the majority of casual games that I played has a standard 4:3 aspect ratio (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768). I think that casual games publishers are still making their games in 4:3.

For information: today i've had one experimental - recorded a 1 minute video in 720p 1280x720 (16:9), and the file size turned out 144 mb. I think this is a very large size and we will have to make the video very short, but so many good games would like to show.

Presentation video by hero_bash is 7 min 27 sec, while the size is only 44 mb ( MPEG4 Video (H264) 656x480).

IMHO: I think our main task is to make a showreel, which will be available to most users that they all could appreciate Construct capabilities. If we make a video in HD 720p, then we significantly shorten the audience and only starred with high-speed Internet will able to watch it (even if people watch video in a low quality through YouTube option, it will reduce the size maximum of 2 times, ie will weigh about 60-70 mb, which is still a lot ). Even if we are going to make in 16:9 - no more than WVGA 854x480 format, because the video size should not exceed 30-50 mb. Or better, I would suggest 800x600 (4:3).

I have a suggestion: let me capture a couple of my games and make two test video: the first in 4:3, the second in 16:9, and together we take a look and choose which format to use for the final video. Do you agree?

Ok, we'll do that. Though I honestly think there wont be an issue for users to view it on youtube, since a 720p video on there will have a number of lower versions to watch, and nobody should have any trouble viewing it in the lowest setting if they have a slow connection (depending on their settings, it may pick the smallest resolution for them, or highest if they can watch better).

Okay, we'll make in 720p. What background will be in 4:3 games? Or there is no background, only black bars?

You could try both, black pillar box bars, or some plasma like effect in them to frame the 4:3 video, unless that ends up distracting too much from the clips (or maybe a variation of your cog intro?). Or maybe add various construct related slogans.

But definitely use your cog intro for the start of the video, because that would fit perfectly!

  • But definitely use your cog intro for the start of the video, because that would fit perfectly!

Do you think we need to use the intro at the start?

I had a idea: video begins with that we run the program and begin to make a game. It's quickly created (within 5-10 sec) and we are starting to play it. This moment shows how easy is to make games with Construct. Then after the first game we see a demonstration of other games, and at the end we show the viewer what it's a program (run the cog intro). Also we can insert words on a black screen between the clips, for example: "Create your world with Construct" , etc.

    What do you think?

Yep I think an intro at the start would look good, very grand looking.

I like the idea of showing quickly how easy it is to make a game too. I think it'll surprise a lot of people at just how simple it really can be, and it was certainly one of the things I didn't quite believe when I first heard of construct. So it'll be good to show people for real. But not Ghost Shooter k? LOL.

I like the ideas though, I think it's gonna end up looking great. Showing both simple games and complex ones, so people who see it can see it's not limited to just basic things.

  • I am so glad my last two demos were at 720P resolution.

    Will start capping videos pronto!

  • While I think it's a good idea to show how easy it is to make a game in construct, I'm not sure it should be a part of this video. I think this video should be a showreel only, and there should be another video showing how easy it is to make a game.
