Outstanding, Quazi! A lot of people have been wishing for Mode7 effects and you've shown that it is very much possible. I wonder if we'll see more examples from other people based off of your .cap in the future?

  • Thanks for the info, GMG.

  • Only because we don't have enough Construct demos to satisfy our talkative natures

    Oh yeah?!?

    Well you're... correct, actually.

  • There's something oddly funny about the fact that we're discussing the release of Stencyl Demos more than THEIR members are.

  • [quote:1l9nrl5r]Some "Behaviors," as we're calling them now, come with the kits in StencylWorks, but many more can be found on StencylForge.

    My god, they're taking everything!

    (kidding )

I'm assuming that the lack of detailed information means they're still partially in "stealth mode". This reveal seems more like it is to appease the people who have been waiting a very long time for something.

If anything, this just makes it more frustrating. There are actual examples of games now but you can't help but think; "Surely it can do more than THAT".

  • If that is indeed a shot of their GUI then yeah I'd have to agree with that one. But it looks so similar to Scratch that I can't help but wonder if it really is just a shot of Scratch.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • The thing I do like is that you can make Browser games like flash with that.

This seems to be Stencyl's biggest strength. A lot of people are leery about downloading .exe's and there is something to be said for the convenience of it all.

On the other hand, Stencyl may never truly be able to compete with Construct, Gamemaker or MMF2 when it comes to graphical capabilities. They don't seem to have any kind of video acceleration or shader support.

I really wish they could give us some solid, detailed information on the UI and what it is like to use it. I have a hard time believing that it could be as easy to use as Construct, or as powerful for that matter.

  • I think I remember someone saying that they can be loaded from an .exe, but you won't be able to save your game. The program is going to be free but it's hard to say if people will charge for the games that they make.

I have to laugh a little at the "Our testers have created some amazing games." comment at the top of the "Developers Stories" page.

They're okay, sure. But "Amazing"? Really?

They're fairly simple platformers but they aren't bad by any means. "Verus" only seems to be running around 20fps and I'm not a big fan of the controls, but the sprite work is decent enough.

I'm guessing that they don't have a particle system in place yet because there weren't really any special effects to speak of (enemies simply disappear when defeated). Also, two of the games have music but none of them have sound effects.

All in all... meh. Not very good but not very bad. Just meh.

At least the Stencyl team finally proved that the project still exists.

  • Damn, just realised I never did anything for April Fools! Argh, the 'bought out by adobe' and 'pink UI' ploys past years worked pretty well...

I was half expecting a "Construct has been purchased by Stencyl" announcement.

  • Are there more controls than just the arrow keys? Everything is so dark and the motion blur just makes it more difficult to tell what is going on...

I like the art, though. The music is appropriately moody as well.

I just started this today so I don't have a lot done yet, but I wanted to thank PixelRebirth for the catapult example .cap that he posted a few weeks ago.

I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong with "hinge" but after seeing your .cap I was able to fix the problem. Thanks!

    Anyway...

"Spacebar" (hold and release to launch)

After the projectile has stopped moving press any key to jump back to the catapult.

    "Left Mouse" (creates new projectile)

I'm just using placeholders for now until I get more of the engine finished, but if you've ever played "Kitten Cannon" then this should be familiar. The goal of the game is to get your projectile to go as far as it can.

I only have trampolines added so far but there will be several other objects that either help or hinder your efforts to get the best distance. These objects will be randomly generated (once I've gotten that far), so every time you launch it will be a bit different.

(p.s. you can launch the projectile in the air a little bit and then hit it with the catapult, almost like hitting a baseball with a bat... sometimes it gets better distance than just launching far, sometimes not)
