  • Thank you Arima, Ashley!

    I was trying to do things the hard way because I thought that you had to do;

    Left("This is a test.",1)

    and then

    Left("This is a test.",2)

    and so forth.

I'm really terrible at coding but every little bit that I can learn from you guys is a BIG help.

  • You may as well make your own text-writing, using the left() expression.

Yeah, I made a pretty simple .cap a while ago using your advice. I was kind of hoping that I wouldn't have to have an event for every single letter, though.

Oh well. Better than nothing, I suppose.

  • You can determine what speed you want text to write itself before it is written, but would it be possible to add a "set write speed" so that it could be sped up while it is writing?

I was hoping that I could make it so that players could hold down a key to speed it up, and on 'key release' make it return to the normal pace. Right now it seems that if you want to change the speed the only option you have is to make the player choose at the beginning of the game whether they want text to go fast or slow.

    -thanks!

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Very nice!

...though I would have gone with "Constructris"

  • Also I have an idea for a game. It's called Geek Roulette.

Rules: Turn off firewall and anti virus. Visit warez site. Take turns downloading until PC dies.

For maximum affect while playing the game wear a red bandanna and lament the futility of the Vietnam War.

  • I sometimes feel discouraged by these awesome 3d box whatever examples random people post here, with crazy math and whatnot.

Good to know I'm not alone. Sometimes I feel like everybody on Scirra has a bigger Math than me.

  • If it's pixels you want, here's a good list of pixel art stuff

    You guys are awesome, seriously.

  • I've *kind of* been doing this so far, but its good advice nonetheless. I think part of my problem might be that I'm still thinking like an RPG Maker user. I'm so used to its event system that I find myself trying to do things the same way.

  • Well, maybe "better" isn't the right word.

I only have a very basic grasp of how to use Construct. I first started using the RPG Maker series and later Gamemaker, but I didn't get very far into learning it since I discovered Construct shortly after.

The game I'm working on isn't particularly advanced in any way, so after some very welcome help from other Construct users I've gotten to the point that I can make most of the things that I want. I'm almost certain that I'm doing it the tedious and resource-heavy way, though.

I've learned some things by asking questions and other things by poking through .caps, but at least as far as I'm concerned I can mostly only tell HOW people did things and not WHY they did them that way.

Soooo what I'm asking is, to all of the advanced and semi-advanced users... how did you reach this level? Were you already experienced with other similar programs and you applied what you learned from them to Construct?

If that's true, then is there a particular book or books that you read that you could suggest? Or did you take actual courses in game design and programming? I suppose its too much to hope that any of you learned from websites...

Well, any advice that you could give on becoming a more advanced user would be greatly appreciated. Its not so much that I don't want to bother people with questions, because everyone here has been very helpful whenever I have asked. Its more that I don't want to have to ask them in the first place. It would also be kind of nice if I could help someone else out for a change.

    -thank you!

  • We could possibly see something on the level of Doom, Duke Nukem 3D or even better, maybe even Quake.

Quake would probably be out of the question. Ashley and others have been pretty clear on just how difficult it would be to make a "true" 3d engine. Doom might be a realistic goal, though.

Well... for someone else, at least. I'm only certain of what I'm not capable of.

  • If you and your friend need some advice on pixel art, then this link will be your holy grail:

Thank you! This should keep me occupied for a while...

  • I've decided to give "The Stormfighter" my full support. Check out the swanky new Avatar!

  • I hate to say this, but one look at the graphics made me think that this is a joke project. The old man in particular is pretty funny.

SuperV might be right, though. If the gameplay is good then the graphics might even add a certain charm to it.

  • I was hoping that there was a better way to do it then what I found over the weekend...

    http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=705bbd0e250d4aa1d2db6fb9a8902bda

I checked out the System Expressions section like Ashley suggested and the "Left" function sounded like what I wanted. It works... but its really tedious since it seems like you can input a number and only a number for the amount of characters that you want to have displayed.

I was hoping that there was a way to tell it to do a series of numbers or something like that, but it looks like Pixelrebirth and ansmesnobody already have a better way of doing it. Sooo... never mind.

    -thanks!

  • Okay, thank you.
