  • Seeing lots of mention about games made with construct, but little to nothing said about it's ability to make applications. I'm curious, what sort of things could be done with that side of construct? It looks like it could be very useful, depending on what it's capable of, of course.

And pleaaaase for the love of James T. Kirk, don't say "oh it can do anything that's an application"!

  • The only applications I've really made are level editors, but it's fairly simple depending on the complexity you're going for.

As for other types of applications, I imaginge that if one were to put enough effort in, just about any type, aside from graphics and sound apps, could be made without too much trouble.

  • You can't add graphics to application runtime, so not really much...

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Yeah, there haven't really been a whole lot of apps made with Construct. It doesn't have the same versatility as something like VB when it comes to stuff like Windows controls.

You could make all kinds of simple little apps, like a file uploader or a batch renamer or other small, single-use things like that, but for anything more complex I would say go for something more geared towards Windows development.

  • I made a program to automatically save screenshots one takes with the printscreen key. I have found it to be pretty useful for a couple of games I play. , if you're interested.

I've also been toying with making a sort of text to speech application, using prerecorded sounds which are played together. h+ell+oh. k+uh+n+s+t+r+uh+k+t. That sort of thing. I'm using the Direct-X runtime, however, as I am calling functions with a delay. It's not exactly a game, at least, and looks like an application. :b

It's more fun to use than the command-line C version I made years ago, and more advanced, too.

Someone could make a simple text editor, for sure.

I could see it being used for a paint program of some kind, too, if you don't mind using the Direct-X runtime.

  • Actually, I don't think you could make much with the application runtime, at least not without a bunch of more useful plugins aimed at the app runtime.

I think it's one of those features which didn't work out quite as we planned - I don't think many people use it, and it hasn't had much development time, it was kind of rushed. So maybe in the next version it'll either be dropped, or expanded on to make it more useful.

Would be a shame to lose it. Someone mentioned using it to create a level editor, so it certainly has it's uses. But I suppose the application side of things would be more useful in the DirectX part than on their own? Though if you have to make a choice, focus on the game side of things hehe. I was just curious what people had used it for, had a few idea's of possible uses myself (nothing special, just lil helper programs, or for doing things in an app that I might currently use PHP for) stuff like that.

  • Well, remember you can do everything the app runtime does in the DirectX runtime, you just need DirectX installed. That wouldn't make sense for public tools, but if it's your own little thing, I guess it's fine.

All level/game editors are/should be made in the DirectX runtime. The App runtime is pretty featureless; it doesn't even support graphics.

  • Actually, I made the level editor with the DirectX runtime. Maybe I was a little misleading there.

  • As someone who has actually created an application intended for public usage with Construct, it'd be a shame to lose the Application runtime. I would very much like to see it expanded, though. Or even have some bugs fixed, like have actually working dropdown boxes.

If you're interested in the app, you can find it here:

I haven't posted about it here since I doubt many people here would have any kind of use for it.

  • I started making a weekly To Do list program in the New App bit but changed to Direct X game to get spites.

Oh my god. I wish I hadn't said that now. I'm a girl who actually pats my neighbor's cat.
