  • Hello! I am thinking to buy Construct 3 and I was wondering what are the best advantages compared to 2? One of the things I like the most is that you can properly use Google Play for mobile, but I am not sure this is enough to convince me to buy it. So those who bought it, can you share your opinions? (I am interested in using it for gaining some income, not just for fun). Thank you!

  • A very good portion of QOL stuff, new features you probably won´t see in C2, new runtime incoming. A year is cheap enough to give it a go and see if you like it. If not, you won´t starve either way.

    Hello,

I haven't used C3 but have used C2 to create monetized apps. In my opinion, if your goal is to monetize, I would look more closely at Android Studio. Android Studio will create a pure APK that is not reliant on plugins to run AdMob etc.

I just had delete a number of C2 created apps from a Google Play account because the Cordova plugin that C2 required was a security risk. That was a lot of work wasted.

  • technically it's still in beta...

the only difference really is in the interface. It has some easier to use features.

the cloud storage is pretty nice, integrates with Google seamlessly.

the add-on manager is a really nice feature.

I have only been using it for a few months and haven't tried any large projects with it. I do really hate that it has to run in Chrome (or another browser) but I think there is a beta web-desktop version.

also new features are coming to it... C2 is the past, C3 is the future.

C2 or C3 is still, hands down, the fastest engine to make a prototype 2D game out there. (I think anyhow)

C3 has official mobile exporter and ads plugin.

  • There's a list of everything new in C3 over C2 on this page.

  • To be honest for me personally right now to have a working GooglePlay plugin is the most advantage. But I think this should be ported to C2 as well, since I bought C2 with the argument GooglePlay would work...

Besides that all new features will only come to C3, never to C2. But right now nothing of the new stuff is something I need or want.

The new runtime will hopefully be a huge difference, if that will be good, I will move over to C3.

Right now the biggest difference is a newly designed editor and support to run in browser and different platforms. Nothing I want, but really requested by others.

  • Only reason to get C3 right now is making APK building easier.

Haven't tested it myself but I'm sure people who have built APKs in 3 can vouch.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • You can use mobile ads in your games made with a program not exactly optimized for mobiles.

You cannot use regular adsense, adsforgames even though this is the actual native territory ( HTML 5 ) for Construct.

Makes absolutely no sense, so it's not good at all until somebody at Scirra headquarters goes: "&%^*&$ what are we thinking?? Yeah, we should fix this shit"

Actually you're more right than you think.

You may not be able to put ads in it, but you can make ads with it.

  • There are pluses and minuses to any engine so here's my list for C3 (note, not just C3 specific stuff but i put it in here anyway):

+ Really like the developers and their update speed is very fast. There's barely a week going by where there's not an update. + I like the browser based software aspect because i can work on my project from any computer. Whether i'm at my dayjob (naughty naughty... i mean working on my game there, not the job ), at school or at home. All it takes is visiting a website and logging in and loading my file from my google drive. It really DOES have a lot of advantages. + The event system is still quite brilliant. As someone who tried out almost every game engine under the sun i honestly believe, it doesn't get more intuitive or easy to use than Construct. + I love the live previews of effects and animations. + I like the JSON styling of character spaces with spritefonts. + REALLY easy to add effects and shaders. It's almost like using photoshop. + Image Points are really cool to easily spawn other objects without having to figure out the x and y coordinate ^^ + Visual Array and Dictionary Editors are extremely cool. + Data handling in general is very easy in Construct.
      • The image editor is VERY rudimentary and has some quirks to it. I would really love to see a nearest point interpolation option for scaling, which would be especially helpful for people using pixel art.
      • I had it happen, that C3 suddenly said it was out of memory i'm not sure if that happens, when you execute your game multiple times and it won't clear the cache or ram or whatever but it happened like once or twice only so...
      • Some Keyboard Shortcuts correspond to the browser and not C3 which is sometimes a bit confusing.
      • Reordering Tabs is really weirdly done. It seems you can pull a tab only in the opposite direction and it's kinda hard to reorder them compared to webbrowsers.
      • I still don't trust the dark theme, it seems to slow down C3 my 13" Macbook considerably. As soon as i deactivate it and go back to the normal one that doesn't happen. I know the 13" model are a bit on the lower end side when it comes to graphical power but i would still expect a webapp like C3 to run smoothly even with the dark theme on as everything else on the web does.
      • iPad usage is kinda iffy. While it's a nice addition it couldn't imagine making a game on mobile devices even on something bigger like the iPad Pro 12.5"
      • Mobile Preview works only around 50% of the time for me on different computers. Most of the time i get a session timeout or something.
      • I think Developers should generally test C3 more regularly on Macs. They seem to be quite an afterthought but nonetheless, love them or hate them, they're still a very important platform especially for visual designers. I also see a lot of potential for C3 as an expanded prototyping tool for apps and so on but most designers there are Mac-based. The most used Prototyping Design Tool (Sketch) is Mac-only.
      • I think C3 should get a lot LOT more 1st party behaviours and plugins but i think that will hopefully come after the new runtime
      • I wish i could save project folder based stuff on my google drive via the browser app.
      • Google Drive Folders are still shown totally messed up. It's like the structure of the drive is getting mixed up considerably it doesn't make sense. I'm still able to find the folder i'm looking for of course on my drive tho of course

Now, while it seems i listed more negatives than positives that's because all the good things from C2 carried over C3 and the best feature of the whole engine for me personally: it enables me to actually make a game

I would highly recommend checking it out, i'm loving it and can't wait to see what the future will bring
