  • Is this true? I can't test this yet, but I recall a beginner's tutorial stating the array starting at 0,0.

  • Steam stats say XP usage is around 10%, and steam's demographic is the same as the one you're probably aiming for. XP usage stats are

If you believe that 17.5% of the market is Russian, then maybe you should learn to speak the language.

  • Ashley is a veteran of the industry, he was already a veteran back when I started, and I have 14 years of experience with this sort of dev tool, so I like to think my opinion carries some weight.

Windows XP is too old to even be considered! Why don't you go ahead and ash Ashley to support internet explorer 6 as well?

Windows XP is 13 years old! When XP was launched, not even windows 3.1 was that old! That would be equivalent to you booting up your XP machine for the first time and hearing someone extol the virtues of windows 2.0! I'm sorry, windows XP isn't even a factor anymore.

Except, XP is on almost 30% of all computers which use the internet daily. 30% is a massive factor, regardless of how old the system is. And I suspect it'll continue to be a massive factor until either Microsoft replaces its village idiot, or Chromebooks is upgraded to become truly PC (instead of PC lite).

And as far as your 'opinion' carrying 'weight', if you've so keen to belittle such as large demographic, then no, your opinion doesn't carry any weight when it comes to commerciality.

  • Just my opinion, though. Cue someone to come in here and defend Windows XP until the cows come home, I guess.

It's funny you know, people said the same stuff when Vista came out. And guess what, Vista's dead, and just under 30% of (daily utilised) internet linked computers still use XP. Windows XP will last another 2 or 3 years yet, by which time Windows 7 will be dead. So you could ask, why are you touching Win7, it's dead and buried.

[quote:2ob6fqzk]There are so many basic things that Windows XP cannot even do that it boggles the mind why people still even use it.

AS a XP user, there's not a single important program I've come across which doesn't run on it. XP can run newer programs. Yet Win7 has all sorts of capacity troubles with all sorts of programs (And Win7 backwards capability is a fail). There are so many useful programs Win7 can't use, it boggles my mind why people have ever used it.

See, there are two sides to the coin, and attempting to ground off the face of one side is grudging without sense. While there's a significant proportion of the market still using any system, it's beneficial to tap into that market. When there isn't, only then is it dead.

  • It doesn't really matter what the overall usage is because Steam represents the largest computer gaming market by far (although it does depend on who you want money from).

Wow, I just had a look at their survey data. Over 17% speak Russian?

    [quote:35cdspbe]English 49.88%+0.48%

    Russian 17.48% -0.68%

    German 5.38% +0.08%

    Spanish 4.76% -0.13%

  • All a can say of WoW is WOW! (although probably not in the way they envision).

  • Well this is taken from actual browser data (February 2014), not a survey.

    http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating ... pcustomd=0

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57618 ... ndows-8.1/

    XP 29.53%

    Win7 47.31%

Not saying the Steam claims are wrong, just that they appear out of line with what overall usage is, plus a survey isn't as reliable as hard data.

  • The XP/Vista thing is a shame, I'm suprised 10% of steam users still use it.

I'm surprised that only 10% of users use it (if true), because almost 30% of computers on the net are still running XP. (43%? for Win7).

  • Is there a cap, or a tutorial about how to do this?

(yes I know it's an older thread, but I've been searching for info on combat creation - without a great deal of luck).

  • In most countries, you can operate as a sole trader, using your own personal tax number. You generally don't need a business license to make or sell games. You can also have the option of registering a business name to be linked with your personal tax number (this helps with branding your products).

But of course you have to check with your own country's taxation department for an 100% answer.

The same applies with any gaming website you want to post/sell/etc your games on.

    > If I want 5 enemies to randomly have health between 20 & 30, can I set an instance value of Health 20, and then set an event random command to give the individual enemies randomly different health?

    >

Yes you can. You set the default value when you create the instance variable, but the individual objects can have individual independent instance variable values (which you can change whenever you want for each individual object seperately).

Cool, thx. I'll keep this in mind for when I get that far (just learning the program at the moment).
