    C2 was already a relic from day 1. All of it's competitors had better features and possibilities, and even they evolve through last years to be a lot better, while C2 still stands the same to this day.

    There's only two things that stands out for C2: events engine and html5 integration.

    C2 was actually ahead of time with the choice of HTML5, but a bad decision since the technology was incomplete at that time. Simple games were barely working on desktop browsers (no WebGL, only Canvas2D)

    Professionally as a Graphic Designer / Animator / Video Editor, I'm using a lot of heavy duty software From Adobe and Autodesk like

    Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, Premiere, Maya, etc etc. If I stop paying my projects don't magically disappear, I still have all the source files. Even if I unsub, If i ever need to change or edit something I just make sure my licence is active again. What's the biggie?

    You are ignoring a great point: you can still edit photos, videos and 3D models using other software, but your game will be "locked" in the engine unless you decide to reprogram it from zero into another engine.

    I know and I should have made myself more clear. Stencyl free version with editing possibility comes with a price: pay (more) for all your needs.

    I don't like any version of the Stencyl example.

    Yes, but you have the option to export native if you want. And you you have the option to continue to develop your project without subscription... Let's say you work at a big game for 2~3 years. You can subscribe only 1 year when you export.

    Tell me how C3's subscription is better since C3 Free version will be very limited ?

    Does it really need to be explained ? Short answer: stability and performance issues.

    As for the price, C3 also has 150$/year and 500$/year business subscriptions for the same features as the 100$ personal license.

    You know what they say about first impressions.

  • You bought C2 and used it, you "consumed" it all this years the price you paid, while a new user had less "value" (less time to use C2) for the same money. So from this point of view is understandable.

    But from a developing point, this is bulls**t. You literally kick in the balls the current userbase, the ones who believed and invested in C2 from the beginning, the ones who made the community to growth, the ones that developed plugins and effects ... etc.

  • Stencyl's price model:

    Free: Almost all the features of the engine with some restrictions (branding and stuff), but export only to Web... Yet, you can still test your game on the other platforms.

    100$/year: Export to Web, Windows, Linux and Mac (no watermarks or forced branding), have Steam support

    200$/year: Export to Web, Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, Android, has Ads, IAP, leaderboards... etc

    In short, even if you stop paying, you still can make your games with some decent restrictions. While I dislike subscriptions, Stencyl offers a nice subscription model.

    The thing is C3 can't pull this off since is only exporting HTML5

    And Ashley already said that C2 has reached maturity (or something like that), so yeah ... in my opinion, it will only receive bug fixes and minor features.

    But on the other hand, you still can use C2 without subscription, so is something

    And if C3 subscriptions will not reach the anticipated results, maybe give C2 access to cloud-compile (for a price of course).

    We even have users that come here to inform us about other software.

    I don't think people are going to leave because Scirra introduces an engine designed for hardcore mobile game designers.

    Are we talking about the same engine that has questionable performance on mobile devices and lots of issues ? (sound, black screen, plugins not compatible with wrapper... etc). And don't forget to "optimize"

    Don't know what was the leave rate anticipated by Scirra Team, but I can bet that more then half of the current users will leave for another engine.

    There are still issues with C2 and the website, forum and arcade that should also be addressed and fixed before a big rollout and they are working on those issues.

    Hope they will be better prepared when C3 will go live.

    As for C3... Well, Stencyl, Gamesalad and BuildBox have subscriptions and are still going, so there is place for C3, only not with the current userbase.

    But don't forget that the engines mentioned before have a showcase with games that were very popular, I can't say the same for C2/C3

    I get your point, but look at it from a different perspective: One who purchased Construct 2 long ago possibly didn't give Scirra any money since then. So it's understandable in my opinion to ask the old users to pay gain. I think a 50% discount for the first year is not a bad deal.

    I've also thought at this, and logically I agree that I've purchased C2, not C3, but from a marketing perspective this is bad (the same kind of bad that made the C3 announcement wreck).

    Why not get the worth of 50% -> 6 free months of C3 ?

    I don't have anything against new users, but don't forget the current users (the ones that are already supporting the community), give them something sweet to swallow the subscription model. Also, giving actually free time to use C3, some of the C2 users might migrate their projects in C3 and "be encouraged" to continue with subscription model.

    Also, C2 users did make only 1 time payment, but think about the community support and the publicity that users had made for the engine by publishing games.

    It looks like C3 will be C2 running in a browser + some added features + subscription model (that is the best way I can describe it at the moment). If you are satisfied with C2 until now and agree to pay 100$/year, then yes, C3 might be a solution for you.

    Also, like newt said, you should first target a platform.

    In my case, subscription model is not for a hobbyist like me, so I am leaving the ship. Also you should consider that almost all the developers who made a bigger C2 game have or are thinking to use another software in the future.

    Best to wait for C3 announcement and decide after that.
