Sadly this kind of conversations keep showing up. I do not understand all the negativity around the subscription model.

I boringly see repeating again and again, day after day, hour after hour the messages how much people dislike the subscription model.

I tell you, most of those complainers and moaners want it all for free.

They keep repeating time and again, that they do not like the yearly subscription. Some of them want a monthly subscription.

If instead of moaning and complaining, take a look at the pricing thread started by Tom, they would easily find out that there is a monthly subscription for a very fair price.

Monthly subscription cost a little less than 13 USD and can be cancelled any time. When you finish your project and cancel your monthly subscription, just move your project to your local hard disk space. It counts for a yearly subscription too. It even solves the problem from people thinking their projects are taking hostage by Scirra.

It keeps surprising me how small people can think and how much afraid people are when things change.

    So what is the problem?

I do not want it for free, but neither will I pay a subscription. I would gladly pay a one time cost and own the software. If it was an improvement over C2 and a full deliverable product I can install and own, I would happily pay several hundred dollars for it. But I will not pay a subscription.

That is the good spirit. I also will pay gladly the yearly subscription fee. Ashley mentioned very good reasons why the "one time payment" model didn't work and how the new subscription give Scirra better revenue to keep up working on adding more exciting features.

I preferred the new subscription model from the very beginning, because in my humble opinion, it will secure the future development of our favourite game development tool.

And believe me, we will see more nice features added in the future. I also expect much of the rewrite of the new runtime.

In case you write your own software (like I do), or sell your own created games, do you sell lifetime licences which gives you one time payments but you have to maintain and keep updating regularly? I am sure you do not, just like myself because you will find yourself quickly without enough income to even update your software.

Only the sun comes up for free, but even with the Sun, you cannot enjoy sunshine every day.

I too am a software developer, and it's pretty standard nobody gets a lifetime license. There are some companies that offer lifetime licenses, but they are few and far between. Maintenance updates are always free, new major version releases are paid for, it's a fairly standard practice and many companies survive just fine. Their subscription model will not pay the bills if nobody subscribes. I forsee the company either changing their pricing model, or fading away eventually.

It's not a question of cost, I could easily afford it, but it's the entire subscription model I'm objecting to. Like others here have already stated, I do not use it continuously. I tinker with it from time to time for my own amusement, then put it away for a while. In fact, after months of inactivity, I pulled it out to do a quick game to demonstrate some additional functionality we could add to our company's website. A subscription only benefits those who use it daily, or are trying to make money from games, and not everybody lives in that world. I for one will most certainly not be subscribing, which is a shame because I really like the engine/editor. But I guess I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that Clickteam's Fusion 3 will be as fun and easy to use.

  • Thanx. I overlooked that when I was reading through it.

  • I'm using the AJAX object to post high scores to a C# based REST service, and the service in question requires an "X-Access-Token" header before it will accept the post. How can I add this header to the built in AJAX object?

  • I'm a software developer by trade, and I work in the HR industry. I recently created an application for tracking court order documents for Garnishments. As a small little bonus, I used your template as a guide, and built a small little game where Uncle Sam collects falling money. It was a huge hit with the Garnishments team.

  • Thanks... I'll download it and use your template as my starting off point. Thank you again!

Here is the construct update you are wanting: https://www.scirra.com/construct2/releases/r243

Ahhh.... beta.... I don;t usually get the beta versions. Anyway you could re-save it under the current release version?

Yes, it does. I went ahead and purchased via credit card yesterday (couldn't wait <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy">), but the PayPal part does work now.
