I'd pretty much trust Xvid (MPEG4) to be installed

but out-of-the-box windows comes with pretty crappy codecs.. among them WMV (not 9)

You could launch the installer for Xvid from a game installer, too.

the offscreen object is a really common pattern in graphical applications.

I agree it's not really "clean" but... even Windows does it (putting text fields outside of a form to store stuff).

You want to rotate it? if so, you might want to use a sprite with drawn text or Lucid's almost-done bitmap text plugin, here:

And yeah, I'm not on Steam yet but soon will be. Still, PC gamers I know don't really care about achievements.... then again I don't know many Steam suscribers personally.

I loved the dialog boxes... However, not a big fan of the type. I mean, I could barely read. In an RPG, that's really bad.
