  • I think I have heard a few commentaries here and there about people who would like to code with the EDK. I think Kiyoshi was one them I think?

Anyway, I'm sure the EDK is no light work at all, but releasing that instead of making an exporter might prove more effective for Scirra. And once it is out, more likely than not, people will start to turn up. I imagine quite a bit of people are following C2 from the outside.

  • Well, no, HTML5 is not by any means my preferred platform, but I do not need EXE right now. My game will be fine on HTML5 from what I gather. May have to sacrifice a little eye candy ( for example particles which for some reason it's eating a lot of resources ) for it but it will be fine. Sadly I do not think it will be playable on older machines. I have machines to test this on. These machines are from around 2004 I believe.

Like you I have high hopes also, that C2 becomes a multi-platform exporter, 5 years it's a long time though and I would keep an eye out for competitors. I think a good move for Scirra is to release the EDK first, this way they can let users work on the exporters and they can worry about what they think it's more important.

I was told months ago to stick to C2 and that is what I am doing and I never doubt C2 at all, in fact, I think it is the best there is right now, I just dislike what it exports to. Let's hope in a year some light can be shed on HTML5 issues.

  • I can for sure upgrade, however I wouldn't do it just for HTML5, that's crazy. But this is not the case for most people around the world, is it? This is not about my own isolated issue, it goes beyond.

I also understand this is relatively new tech. and it means it has ways to go, but some of these issues I just don't see them resolved easily (or ever). Performance on new powerful machines will increase and this is obvious. How much will it increase a year from now? Who knows, but I sure hope it's enough to run things at 60FPS. What will the increase on older software be? Probably, still unplayable. My 5 years mark might seem pessimistic for some stuff, but for others, it really isn't.

Yes, EXE stands superior to HTML5 now and as long as it supports older machines, it will stay that way. This goes for any native formats, not just EXE. The topic of casual gaming vs gaming is a different animal and it wasn't my point or mentality at all. This is about the future of gaming in general, and as I see it right now, it is going backwards in performance and dependency in exchange for ease of use an cross-platforming. I just don't think it should be this way. I am sure it is not only myself who does not like to depend on even more people ( who by the way, cannot seem to be able to agree on anything when it comes to standards ) to have my games or apps. run well.

HTML5 needs independence from browsers, a huge performance boost, compatibility, hassle free offline gaming, game-pad support ( I have already seen this, but this just started ), much better full screen ( also know this is being worked on ), audio needs to be worked on badly. How long does this seem it's going to take?

  • Why worry so much about protecting so much the game assets? I mean, if a game gets popular enough, it will get hacked and dismembered, no matter what, it's only a matter of putting effort and time into hacking it. I dunno, it's like a never ending war. I don't know, it's just a personal opinion, but I would be happy people want my assets so bad, I might be doing something right.

It also plays an important role on yer game's popularity.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • My game is ineligible for the arcade anyway.

And I have no budget. None. So I need something free. Fast.

    Does anyone have anything? Anything?

(Also, I need an answer for the second question).

EDIT: Sorry for being a bit annoying. I was a bit irritated ;)

I looked around for a bit and found 3owl.com... it looks pretty good, unlimited bandwith and storage but if I am not paying am I always going to miss out on important features?

Don't know if this is what you are looking for, but ever heard of Game Jolt?

  • Yes, it surely is easier to click a URL and play the game while you are online. Also, the security warning argument, I never find it as an excuse whatsoever. How hard is it to click on yes or no, keep or discard? And if you know the game you are downloading, how can anybody be scared of warnings? Warnings are there to make sure you know that you are downloading an EXE that could contain a virus, if EXEs were so evil, then I guess most of us wouldn't even on the forums discussing how evil EXEs are... Oh wait... I wouldn't be able to use C2 either or any of the very best game making tools. And don't you need an EXE (or any other native format) to run an HTML5 game/app. anyway?

Nothing is fully fool proof and I realize there's lots of those around the net, but that's not yer, browsers devs., game devs. or my problem. Is it?

My drivers are ALL up to date, most drivers aren't updated anymore though, so there's no further updates possible. I'm sure this is the case with most people around the world as well.

I never intended my words to be taken into the context of a heated argument. I was just trying to point out the problems of HTML5 now and who knows if they will ever be fixed. It is clear that at the current state, HTML5 isn't older hardware friendly, and that's quite tacky. HMTL5 performance issues might get fixed on new and powerful hardware, what about the other guys? Will offline play be easier?. We can blame the card makers and such for some of this issues, but let's be clear on something, native formats do not have a problem running on older hardware. I have ran native games on hardware that was less than satisfactory for the game requirements, still a very decent speed. Will HTML5 accomplish such a thing on older computers? Somehow I really doubt this. But, Who knows? And even if it did, how long would it take it? 5 or 10 years?

Also, I never said anything about making exporters now, I never said that at all. In fact, I said I understood yer position to want to finish something first before starting anything. I however, did say that having a back up plan, is a good idea, and I still think that and won't change.

And the whole running in a browser thing, it seems backwards, for reasons I already stated.

More dependencies = more convenience? Better technology?

Only when HMTL5 can rid of ALL its shortcomings it will be able to stand up against native formats. Nobody can say what the future holds for HTML5, but it surely cannot stay like this.

There's nothing I want right more, than to be proven wrong. Sadly, it is all speculation.

  • Hence, the need for more than one exporter. If HTNML5 isn't going to play nice with older computers, the audience will be very limited.

  • I believe this should be in the "Website Issues" forum?

  • Main reason I am not too convinced with HTML5, it's cos it seems to only be effective on new and powerful hardware and devices. I have no idea if this is going to change in the future or not, because quite honestly, isn't this a really bad setback? I have three computers, one with a crappy video card, Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 2800+ 1.60GHz and 1GB memory. Needless to say, HTML5 games struggle so badly. I have another computer with a 1GB video card, 2GB RAM and the same processor It can take a bit more of a beating than the other computer, but overall it is still a laughable HTML5 experience. I have another one, this one is a Laptop with Intel(R) HD Graphics, 4GB of RAM, Intel Core i3 2.40GHz, 64-bit W7 Ultimate. This computer runs smooth most of the time, but it is considerably more powerful than the other two. Still, it doesn't run at full speed all the time though. When I was looking at the particle effects examples, it did not run at full speed either, most examples ran at 30FPS. My thoughts were, how am I supposed to run a full game that includes particles effects in HTML5 if only the particle effects alone are eating this many resources? The way I see it right now, to run a HTML5 game smoothly, you need a really powerful computer, that is preposterous, since most people cannot afford it and SHOULDN'T have to spend money on a new computer for the sake of HTML5 games.

Another issue is that with HTML5, as a developer AND user, you not only depend on yer native platform, but also on the browsers developers. This seems a little backwards to me, it is too much dependency.

Again, these issues need to be addressed ASAP by the HTML5 people if HTML5 really aims to be what it claims. Needless to say, native format 2D games all run fine on the three computers.

This is about HTML5 and it is not about C2, there's really nothing I can complain about this amazing tool. However, there's plenty that needs to be done to HTML5 and I really hope they resolve them.

EDIT: Also forgot, although it is possible to play HTML5 games offline, it is a hassle and surely much harder than installing an EXE game on a computer. A casual user is more than capable to install an executable on their computer, but how many are capable of setting up the computer for offline HTML5 gaming?

  • Two words for to this. FU*K LOGIC.

  • Not much. Haven't touched a game in over two weeks. Last I played was FIFA 12. I'm just busy with game resources making and hunting.

  • HTML5 is for sure not the best for gaming as of right now. Too much unnecessary discrepancies on what the standards should be and as I see it's all corporate stupidity. Also, to be fair, it is still a baby and much has to be done for it to be a full fledged gaming platform.

Ashley has made it clear, that he first wants to be done with the IDE and the HTML5 exporter before delving into exporter hell. I too, am an EXE exporter supporter, as I believe it is the best platform, for many reasons that cannot be denied ( granted not for cross platforming or portability ), but know that this is not an easy task and with one programmer alone, as of right now this is not possible. And if the EDK isn't released yet, nobody else can do this.

Patience is key factor, and it is clear that only ONE exporter is not, under any circumstances, a good choice. Remember that Both C2 and HTML5 are not complete yet and still in development. When C2 supports more exporters, I am sure it will dominate every single one of them. After all, it already makes every other tool look like either a joke or a hassle.

  • I don't get it. Why complain about this stuff when you aren't forced to put yer real info in these places? I don't trust anything on the internet, my FB, Google, Twitter, Youtube is all fake personal info. My only real info is when I buy something online, and it's not even that bad either. I honestly couldn't give two poops about their privacy policies, it's my info and I share when I want to, not when they tell me.

I actually had a FB account suspended, because I was under the name of "Ezio Auditore", they suspended it (even though I see hundreds of fake obvious names in FB). Anyway, I sent them an angry letter stating this was bull, but they said I had to send them a photocopy of my ID and other stuff, LOOOOOL. I simply wrote back they can shove it up where they like it better and made a new account, still with a fake name.

And I dunno how you are blaming Scirra for this either, each company it's a different entity.

  • It's programming, whatever way you look at it.

You are programming something to obey what you tell it to. When you make an enemy AI, for example, you are programming that enemy to do whatever you tell it to. The definition of programming:

1 - The action or process of writing computer programs.

    2 - Predetermined behavior.

Making a game, typing code or not, it is still a computer program (see def. 1).

You make the game to do whatever you tell it to, this is a predetermined behavior (see def. 2).

The second definition does not only apply to computers, but also to real life. Say you want to go camping a month from now, "programming" the trip, it's a good idea.

It is a misconception of words because traditional programming came much, much earlier.

Eventing sounds nice too, though nobody knows what it means outside of this community

Davioware : Believe or not, this term is well known and used in the same manner, in the RPG Maker communities.

  • Happy anniversary! And here's for many, many more. :)

    Amazing progress.
