  • I was pleasantly surprised how well my game worked on the iPad from the Scirra arcade. My "preview over lan" tests were not great. Thinking I'd have to do a ton more optimizing, tried playing it on the iPad on a whim. Worked good! ( though there is a delay in when the music starts to play as apposed to playing it on a desktop browser)

  • I don't understand what to do, but the game is beautiful. Maybe add some more explination in the instructions?

    Edit: It get's really messy after a while, can't see anything.

    Hey thank you so much for the feedback and for playing the game!

    Sorry for the confusion (but isn't that part of the fun?) <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" /> In any case, here are the instructions from the "instructions" drop down menu on the Arcade page:

    • "Defend the ground by shooting the invading "Buff Monsters".
    • Your player icon is the funny looking "sun" thing with the smile, bouncing around. Photons shoot out from his "eyes" in the direction he is facing.
    • To fire Photons, press SPACE, or MOUSE CLK or TOUCH SCREEN (if you have a touch enabled device).
    • Do Not shoot the "Big Buff Cloud" or you will loose points. Be careful with your shots, don't "spam shoot". Try to time your shots and make clever bank shots.
    • Shoot the "Doodle Block" - the dark square thing bouncing around - to cause it to act as a Photon. It will loose its "photon power" if it passes through the Big Buff Cloud or Spawn Cloud (thing at top that spawns Buff Monsters).
    • Score more points than the "Buff Monsters" to continue play."

    Here is the in game "How to play" layout as well:

    Hope that helps and that you will give it another try! I've found that shooting less, works a lot better (See YouTube video above).

    Cheers!

  • Here's a gameplay video of how it looks running in the Safari browser. (I had to tweak the artwork a little to work without the WebGL effects)

  • Wow, the game runs really well in the Scirra Arcade on my iPad. Way to go Scirra!

    I was surprised because I have been trying for weeks to get decent framerates on my "preview over lan" connected iPad, so was psyched to see it work so well (better) "on line"! (made me think maybe I can stop working on that aspect for now!)

    Thanks again to Scirra for creating such an awesome tool in Construct2!

  • "non-WebGL" version of H?pfen now playable in the Scirra Arcade.

    PLAY H?pfen in the Scirra Arcade

    Of course it plays really well in CHROME, but also plays really well in Safari and Internet Explorer (go figure!). It doesn't play so great in Firefox for some reason.

    Here's some screenshots of gameplay from the Safari browser.

    This is the "original" version uploaded on Jan 1st:

    Play H?pfen (original version) on Chrome Web Store here

  • Awesome use of shaders and was this based on the bouncing ball example by any chance? Highly creative.

    Thank you!

    No, I was just playing around with the physics (love that) and one thing lead to another <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" /> I'm sure my code is not the most efficient but once I got the gameplay balance "right", I just left it (amazing how subtle changes to the code can totally change the game dynamic) - I'm sure it could be improved.

    The Scirra arcade version I am working on now (the non-WebGL) is getting more refined, trying to keep the same feel as the "original" Chrome version while making it play "nicely" in other browsers. Next "version" after that is a mobile version, then an iOS version (THEN I can start working on another game!!! lol)

  • Super funny video review by RockLeeSmile of Indie Impressions.

    So much fun to watch someone play your game. I thought he was very kind and gave an honest "first impression" - which is exactly the kind of response I wanted. (Though, had he read the instructions on the Chrome Web Store, he would have gotten more out of the game). It was a very generous of him to take the time to review it, and made me laugh. (I also got some ideas of how to make the instructions more clear)

  • Nicely done!

    I was checking this game out through your post on LinkedIn (HTML5 Games group) and I was wondering what you used to create this as it was working really well on my iPad. I thought "now wait a minute, what are they using to make this? How is this running on my iPad?" not sure exactly how that was working as I was "inside" the LinkedIn app. <img src="smileys/smiley5.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

    I was excited to see your posting here. Good job!

  • Working on a non-WebGL version for the Scirra arcade. Below are a couple of screen shots from IE and Chrome. (you'll also notice a FPS counter I am using for debugging)

    <img src="http://www.scobot.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Hupfen_promo_WebArcade_IE_640.jpg" border="0" />

    (web browser = IE)

    <img src="http://www.scobot.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Hupfen_promo_WebArcade_Chrome_640.jpg" border="0" />

    (web browser = Chrome. Note the Chrome version does have a WebGL effect, Gamma with no settings in order to creat the draw effect, but it is using the same art assets as non-webgl browsers, if that makes sense. lol)

    I actually kind of like how it looks in IE - shocking!

    <img src="smileys/smiley3.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • I'm absolutely fascinated how this looks totally insane and beautiful at the same time ! I think your game is more than that, and can be considered as a true work of art !

    gorgonzola3000: Thank you! Coming from you, and your awesome game, that truly means a lot! I originally thought about just keeping it this strange no gameplay, no audio/music - "screen saver" type thing - lol! But i decided to push myself and see if i could make a game out of it. I'm glad I did, i learned a lot! and judging from your comment, it sounds like I did both! Thank you!

  • Fantastic!! Awesome artwork. Love the character design, love the environment, very very good! And good choice in music!

    I love all the layers you created - the foreground, the floating leaves, and the levels of parallax backgrounds! Very well thought out and very cool. I like how the perspective (camera point of view) shifts when you jump - cool! Great feel to the game. Keep going!!! Don't over think it, you may only need to add levels, instead of RPG aspects.

    My only "suggestion", as a cat lover, would be to see the cats and hamster work together - maybe to fight some "evil force", like the Skeleton Army that killed the Hamster's (and cat's) owners and they are out for revenge or to rescue someone - with your art style I bet you could make something super cool. Just my 2 cents.

    It's great though and you should do what you want! lol

  • Great use of the sketch effect. I was puzzled at first as to how you did it. I figured a ton of math and a bunch of drawing. Super clever! Really dig the style!

    Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

    I'm hoping you got a chance to play it too <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Thank you so much for the feedback! Here is some info about how I achieved the weird look.

    1) All LAYERS of the LAYOUT are set to TRANSPARENT in the layer properties (including the bottom/background layer). This causes the "streaking" effect - not sure exactly how it works, something to do with screen redrawing or such. A little trick/exploit that I thought looked really cool :)

    2) I'm using the WebGL "SKETCH" effect over the whole layout. This, from what I can tell, draws an outline around all objects. If objects are overlapping, then the shape of the two (or more) objects gets an outline. It's a cool effect and I really like how it looked (for the Non-WebGL version, I'm creating B&W versions of the assets to approximate the look, not the same, but there you go)

    3) The particle effects are just straight out of the box Construct2 default settings (since I didn't have any clue what I was doing lol), but I liked the look, so I just kept them! (I did "design" the particles with little shapes on the one "frame" and set the cone to 360, maybe some other minor tweaks). For the "mobile version", I have to finesse them a bit (though I am finding the collisions are killing my FPS more than the particles!)

    4) No fancy math or nuthin', just good ol' physics collisions! I like just seeing what happens. I've always enjoyed "real world games" of making up stuff in the backyard with a ball and a wall, so I was kind of going for that with this.

    I appreciate the questions! Hope I answered them - happy to explain more!
