  • Hi everyone, just want to give an update on how the development of the game has gone. After over 12 months of development of the game with Construct 2 I am afraid that we have accepted defeat and moved to a new development platform.

In this case we have moved to Renpy, recently it has had some massive updates which have made the free visual novel creation tool just so much better for development. We really wanted to use construct 2 for the game but it simply started to fall down a bit when we wanted to use very large graphics and sprites.

Swords of Edo currently includes over 30 different high resolution 1280x720 detailed backgrounds and a hundred plus individual character sprites and animations and sadly loading all that seemed to cause C2 some issues. Renpy however loads it all seamlessly as it was designed as a dedicated platform for this kind of game.

Anyway we love working with C2 and will continue to do so with our other games but for now it seems Renpy really is the best if you want to make a visual novel game.

Swords of Edo is now in the top 100 games on steam greenlight and is about a month or two away from final release.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the game development so far.

  • Hi, I was just curious as I have my own game on greenlight, how easy or hard it was to integrate the base game without any steamworks extras into the steamworks overlay to sell the game on steam. Is it something where i will need knowledge on a different coding language etc to do it, if my only current experience is with C2?

  • Thank you, the campaign is close to the 600% mark, or 6k, and I am working on a separate mini-game as part of it that we hope to release on mobile devices eventually. Steam is close to 50% of the way to the top 100 as well and well we are almost ready to release a demo of the early beta for players.

  • Hi all, thanks, glad you all like the look of it, and every yes vote on Steam helps, and if you know anywhere to post about it, it all helps.

We are currently just working on the battle mini-game at the moment.

A kind of hybrid between street fighter style combo animations and final fantasy turn based combat.

The early version of the battles are really starting to come together, so that hopefully we might even have a playable demo very soon.

  • Hi all,

The game I have been developing now for a while with the aid of Buko Studios is now very close to completion...

It is a visual novel game that includes a fun battle mini game inside it. You play as an assassin sent to an academy to find a terrorist leader and stop them before they can... etc.

I don't want to give the story away.

Anyway please you can check more details our on my steam greenlight page (please vote yes as we are doing well but could use another boost)

Or you can even get a copy on our very successful kickstarter expansion campaign that is currently underway:

The Swords of Edo game is based on one of the characters from a graphic novel series I have also released.

    Any support would be welcome.

    Thanks.

  • Hi everyone (Happy Christmas)

It's Christmas but I have some time to kill before I see my family so thought I might update everyone on the games I have been making.

    1) Quantum Flux

My first game funded via kickstarter raised 220% over its target for around 2700, originally named Spatial flux:

Version 1.08 has been officially released today, using the C2 node web-kit for Windows, Linux and Mac and it is a little over 74mb in size.

Click here or on the image to see a larger version

Quantum Flux is a text based, rogue-like space exploration game, where players have to try and reach a safe haven to ensure humanities survival after the sol system was destroyed. On the way players will have to fight other ships, trade and encounter strange spatial phenomena.

In addition we have included a second game mode that allows players to simply fight ever increasingly difficult combat sequences. The game includes scoreboards, achievements and other bonuses in both the campaign and combat game modes.

I am currently re-developing the website for quantum flux but you can see the out of date site here: www.quantumfluxgame.com Aiming to re-launch it before the year ends.

    2) Swords of Edo

My second game funded via kickstarter did much better than the first, raising over 400% of its initial target for a total of over 12000 for development funds. Swords of Edo is currently in a late alpha stage of development.

    <img src="http://swordsofedo.com/images/character-all.png" border="0">

Swords of Edo is Visual Novel game set in a fantasy world where Japan remained isolated from the world, they are still in a semi feudal society. The player controls 'Asumi' (one of the main characters from the graphic novel series) a female warrior who investigates crimes to keep the peace. The game follows her as she goes undercover at a Samurai Academy

We have recently re-launched the Swords of Edo website with more details on the game and the characters to appear within it:

    www.swordsofedo.com

We plan on moving into beta testing in late January for a release in April next year.

    ----

Both of these games are being fully created in C2, Quantum Flux was developed alongside Buko Studios, whereas Swords of Edo is something I am currently working on alone (but with the aid of several great artists).

  • Hi I have posted before about this when it was part of my previous campaign, my backers have all voted for me to do a dedicated campaign for a Swords of Edo visual novel game.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ajtilley/swords-of-edo-visual-novel-game

More artwork for the series has now been completed and we have already exceeded our primary goal on the campaign. Which will ensure a bigger better game will be created. Our stretch goals are now there to raise more funds for voice acting and better battle scenes.

  • Hi,

A bit of an update, development of the game has continued in the last few months, we used up the initial funds we raised from the graphic novel and are now running a dedicated kickstarter for the game. Which has already reached its primary target and is doing well...

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ajtilley/swords-of-edo-visual-novel-game

We are now half way to the first stretch goal, this visual novel game will also include some form of battle system, we are testing a street fighter style approach or even a card game of some kind.

  • Thanks, glad you like.

The kickstarter campaign is doing well, the games initial design is now funded and we are at about 300% so will be good to work on this after my first game is completed.

  • Hey all,

    last update.

We are now in the final 30 hours or so of the campaign, the game's stretch goal for funding has been reached, we are now at over 300%.

We have also raised enough funds to increase the size of the graphic novels and create a full colour vinyl figurine.

More stretch goals available, but the main thing is that the game will be created now, so if interested then check it out here while you can :)

  • Hello All,

I am currently developing a Dating Sim game in my spare time (when not working on Quantum Flux) and have now put a working prototype up.

A link to which can be found on my kickstarter campaigns latest update:

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ajtilley/swords-of-edo-graphic-novel

But here are some images from the prototype:

    <img src="http://www.swordsofedo.com/images/scenes.png" border="0">

Artists are working on better images to replace some of the placeholder ones currently in the prototype.

  • Hi everyone, my kickstarter is now close to its second stretch goal.

If anyone is interested in Japanese style dating sim games, then I have also posted a prototype of the dating sim game being created rather easily I might add in C2 onto the campaign.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ajtilley/swords-of-edo-graphic-novel

Check it out on the latest update.

The game will include two versions a safe all ages version and an adult version with the typical ecchi content you would find in a game of this kind. The prototype can also be played here:

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/37489891/prototype/index.html

  • P.s. we are 3 days in and at about the 40% mark so a good start. :)

  • Hi,

I am running my second campaign on kickstarter now that my first game is in the alpha testing phase. This campaign is a little different as its main focus is on creating a series of anime styled graphic novels.

But I also intend to create a fun dating sim style game in construct 2 once the graphic novels are complete as well as a platformer game in the same universe of the novels as well.

I have so far included one of the games in my stretch goals list:

Anyway please take a look at the kickstarter campaign and if you like what you see... pledge as there will be a game coming for the series eventually whether we hit the stretch goal or not. But the closer we get the quicker it will be.

  • mineet: thank you, development is moving along nicely now, and the art assets are coming in, so far on target with my goals :)

Blinx123: As noted in my response i wasn't referring to the cost of setting up a company in the UK, but to setting up a company in the US before Kickstarter came to the UK. As a UK citizen I didn't need to set-up a company in the UK so I don't know what that cost would be. It may be cheaper than setting up in the US, but it may not be.
