Why everyone I tell about Construct doesn't use it

  • Hello,

I'm a Mac lover, and most of my family and friends are Mac lovers.

Most everyone I tell about Construct will look it up, look at the features, say it's amazing, go to download it, and discover it's PC only. When they ask me if they can package it in Wine, and I say no, they just leave the Scirra site and forget about Construct 2 forever. That's about 5 people I've seen a similar pattern with.

I just thought I might as well bring this up to Scirra's attention about the group of people they are missing out on. If you guys could find a way to package Construct in something like CrossOver or Wine and distribute it that way, then we would all be happy.

    Thank you!

  • As a small company, Scirra has to make tough compromises. Unfortunately at this time they cannot afford to work on something like this which will serve a minority of their market.

  • sqiddster - Haha. I've seen their team. That is too bad. I guess I'll just have to live...

  • Interesting that Construct 2 doesn't work in Wine, as I think someone was able to get Construct Classic working in it, maybe even the games themselves (in C2's case this is definite as they're HTML5)

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • I think some Mac users successfully run Construct 2 with Parallels.

  • You may find this thread useful.

  • Knifegrinder and Ashley - Thank you, but I'm a cheapo. No money for Paralleled... Yet. Thank you though. I'm running Construct on Virtual Box right now.

I've used C2 with parallels 7 and it works great.

I have yet to meet a Mac owner that doesn't use either Parallels or Fusion to run windows programs.

  • I'm in the same boat as the pug... :)

I started using Construct 2 within Parallels 7 and it ran pretty well (newer 2012 MacBook Pro). But the opportunity came around to pick up a Windows 7 laptop so I have started doing everything on that now.

But I would never turn down a port of C2 for OS X. Never. ;)

But I would also rather see more functionality go into the current build rather than see Ashley do what some of the other tools have done and split their effort between multiple platform builds and see new functionality suffer.

  • Just a random tip: if you experience crashes, especially when creating a new project or opening an existing project, try disabling GPU acceleration in the VM if you can. Crashes at those points are always graphics card driver bugs, but in a VM it means buggy GPU virtualisation.

  • I have used parallells 7 to run C2 on my mac and it worked nicely but for better over all smoothness I run win7 with bootcamp

  • Use Bootcamp on Mac. Install windows.Install construct hoppa works like a charm.

  • I think I'll buy the $10 parallels I mentioned in the tools section. I'm tired of Virtual Box.

    It's a French Bulldog :P (but ppl think he's a pug)

I agree with you 100%. Given Scirra's small team size, I would much rather see more effort on features than a Mac port.

Also to add, yes I also run it in Bootcamp for better performance.

  • So I have it running perfectly in Parallels 8, but I can't get the "Run Layout" preview to work properly. Anyone have any tips?
