A question concerning Construct 2

From the Asset Store
Casino? money? who knows? but the target is the same!

I just want to understand something:

When Scirra is saying that Construct 2 will " be retired on July 1st, 2021" what they really mean? That after July 1st, 2021 all the video games that were created with Construct 2 will no longer work when you will try to play with it online? Or this simply means that Scirra will no longer sell the Construct 2 software on their website and only Construct 3 will be available?

The latter - they'll also stop providing updates and bug fixes.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

You can still create and sell Construct 2 games just like you can currently still use Construct Classic.

Just like how Microsoft still allows people to use Windows XP, Vista, and 7, but they will never release any new features or bug fixes again.

From now on, Construct 2 will only be maintained with essential bug fixes and compatibility updates.

They need to keep it at least usable, otherwise people will start asking for refunds.

If I'm correct essential fixes will be implemented until C2 official retirement.

That said as the nature of software development and services progresses, I take it that C2 will soon date.

But that's applicable to everything in this fast moving world:D

As a user of a one of their products, it's up to me if I want to continue my involvement with them.

Of course in this case they've replaced something with the next thing. Which is still the original product. (Long story.)

If they retire a product and give enough notice, they are not obligated to refund any money for dated software if I'm correct.

I'm sure that as a business they've also used services that one day told them: "Canceling so-and-so tomorrow.", which then forced them to change business practices whether they wanted or not. Or get in the unemployment-line.

As much as they are a service to us. That service itself will remain their first priority. This is not to be rude or anything, it just is.

Do you mean that they will withdraw it from sale on July 1, 2021 but will continue to support, for example, fixing bugs?

Yes, we stop selling it from the date mentioned in the blogpost (1st July 2020) and then continue to support it for one more year.

No more bug fixes, or compatibility updates after a July 2021?

We stop selling Construct 2 on July 2020, and no more fixes/updates from July 2021.

I could understand an option for C2 imports to mitigate future compatibility issues, but what if something breaks compatibility with C2 imports into C3?

That would be a C3 bug that would be dealt with the usual way.
