  • In terms of making rpg ganes what are the cons and pros of Construct 2 & RPG Maker to those who used the program?

I used the old version of RPG Maker before when I was still beginning in learning C2 but didn't really took it seriously and it was only for about a day or two. So how about it, any comments?

    THANKS

  • I noticed the other day, Steam queues had the option to flag keywords for games you don't want.

    RpgMaker was one of them.

  • While I do like RPG Maker, and have used it on and off since the PS1 version, it really is only catered to making one specific type of game. Where as C2 is more like a sandbox where you can create anything you want, RPG Maker designed just for making RPGs. There are scripts to create more Zelda-esque titles, different battle systems, or different dialogue options, but some of them aren't the most intuitive and most only work for certain versions of the software.

With C2, you would have to build all the mechanics that come with RPG Maker, so it all depends on how much control you want over your game.

So with that said, if you are interested in making an RPG, I would at least try RPG Maker. It comes with everything you need, but if you want something that truly stands on it's own you would want to create all the art and music yourself, instead of using the prepackaged stuff.

I think VX Ace may still be the most popular version, but MV uses HTML5 so you can export to more devices.. There's always a trial version of the software if you would like to try it out.

  • I agree with the above.

If you're a complete beginner and just want to make an RPG as quickly as possible, go for RPG maker.

However, if you want to create a customized RPG with some innovations of your own, Construct 2 will give you more freedom, but you'll have more to figure out on your own.

  • A mechanic is only as good as his tools... or something like that.

RPG Maker, as already stated, is not a *bad* piece of software - it's just not the most intuitive and definitely not as flexible as C2 (or many of the other options out there for making games).

  • I used MV and ACE. The new RPG maker has lots of third party (javascript) addins that make all kinds of things possible. All the art though is childlike with "Really Big Heads".

If you just want to make an RPG, and big heads don't bother you, then RPG maker is the way to go. You will have something up and working in no time.

C2 isn't just for RPGs, so it would take more time to make in c2.

Thank you guys for sharing your experiences and giving information you have about the program. I haven't had the chance to download the trial version since our internet connection is sluggish right now and because of that, I will have no choice but to install the program tomorrow.

In RPG Maker MV do you make the game animations examples (Hero, AI, Monsters, Objects, Terrain, Background) or does RPG Maker MV already have those asset collection to provide the customers most of the animation they need?

    Edit:

Ohh Yeah, base on the length of time to learn the program and how easy it is to learn. If Construct 2 is Scaled as "1" how much is RPG Maker MV scaled?

    Thanks XD

  • I don't own MV but, if it's anything like previous versions, it should come with a base set of everything you need to make a game. Of course you can always buy or make more graphics, sound and music if you feel there isn't enough for you to work with.

The software is quite easy to get into. It's definitely not as customizable as C2, but does give you fine control over things like character and enemy stats. If you used the provided assets, you might be able to hammer together something playable in a few days.

  • ryanrybot - Can you make your own Opening Layout like C2? or Ad's? or IAP Layout?

  • Sure, you can make title and intro screens and stuff like that. If you want to check out what is possible, there are quite a few games made with RPG Maker on Steam; To The Moon being one of the more popular ones.

As for IAP and ads, I can't say I know for sure. There might be a way to have them in MV, but I don't know for sure. The RPG Maker forums might be a better place to find answers, as I'm not very familiar with the newer versions of the software.

  • if you know java and are willing to reverse engineer rpg maker mv - then you can write plugins for it to add unique gameplay to your game. But it is much more difficult to do than putting together a bunch of event sheet events in c2

  • RPGMaker pretty great, by my previous experience with it.

As long as your focus in the story and choices, you can work quite fast in the software.

Too bad I am interested in making srpg though, so it is unsuitable for me for now.

  • ryanrybot - Yes. I will try to ask RPG Maker forum when I try to learn it.

blurymind - Well I have no knowledge about Java. So that's out of my hands. Are you sure it is Java not Javascript?

Sethmaster - I can also see that your type of game is too complex for RPG Maker. BTW if you scale it from 1 to 10 by how fast you learned the program if 5 is "Construct 2" what would be your scale for RPG Maker MV? Just want to know if I have enough time to learn RPG Maker XD . Thanks.

  • sorry - my mistake. It is in fact java script

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads

By the standard you set, I would say the speed I learn about RPG Maker functionality would be a perfect 10.
