That monthly subscription seems to be for Educational use since it's categorised under the Educational bit in Toms post.

If not maybe they should make it clear.

  • Oh I was going to say, the English helps

Or the option to suspend your subscription if you know you're not going to use it for a few months.

    Or that yeah.

ASHLEY. Seems most..ok not all... but most people here aren't against the subs. We just want fair / reasonable use.

    Monthly subs. Thats the answer.

I think the point of this thread is to reason with Ashley before it comes to that. Talking about this afterwards is difficult if everyone leaves. The damage is done.

On a side note, most everyone here are event sheet junkies. And the majority of the vocal community seems to be against this subscription model. I'm curious about how many people are actually bluffing? If there was a better solution for people right now, they wouldn't be here debating about it. And if Ashley doesn't ever come around to what the community wants, which other product will fill the gap C3 leaves? I know of one other game engine that's very interested in angry construct users and are already planning to add features to sway them. That's just how the market works...

Whatever happens, it's very interesting to see what comes of all this.

Look each engine is different but similar

    But here we all are.

I don't think anyone here is just raging for the sake of wanting free stuff etc. People like the tool and they come to like Scirra as a company which is now going into a direction that concerns them for each of their own reasons.

    Why would anyone be bluffing?

There are 6 direct competitors and at least 3 or 4 more thats indirect competitors. If you don't like what Construct 3 is there are definitely alternatives. I love the Event System, but the other tool's systems arent necessarily worse, just different so it's a learning process that you will have to invest into. I mainly used a different tool even though I own C2 and messed around with it a bit, I'm actually now looking at using C3. So I'm basically learning from scratch. People going the opposite way can do the same.

For me there is one competitor that is as good but that's only going to be out at the end of the year beginning 2018 imho and the full version would be at least $299 I reckon. That's 3 years of Construct 3 funds if the money is your only concern, but you own it and you can use it for whatever.

At the rate Scirra ads fixes and updates, in 3 years we would have a new runtime for performance and features, WebGL2.0 would have advanced even further etc.

If Ashley can sort out the "you will still be able to access and change a project that you worked on previously" then I don't see any issues really with the sub model. One thing though.....expectations are raised as well with a subscription model...which I'm sure Ashley would have realised with their "analysis of sales and customer data".

  • Ashley, the gamejam sounds great, but right now I can't even complete the "Beginner's Guide"... i've got my background and main layers, but can't create the HUD. I'm a high school teacher, my students have Chromebooks, and i hoped to help them through the Beginner's Guide. How about upping the limit to 3 layers? Nothing dramatic, but enough to add a way to display the score? Thanks for the consideration!

Always a risk to start teaching things with an app that is still in Beta...

  • Good tutorial! Thanks.

Penelope made over 300,000$ before the WiiU port, you start to pay 5% per quarter if you make over 3,000$, So yea, They would have hit the threshold to start paying

    ...per calendar quarter though.

But really interesting and awesome for the devs that it did well.

Although my statement still stands. How many more people would have been paying Scirra now from successful games?

But at least I want to state why subscriptions suck for game development - especially for freelancers and indie devs. I think your claim of not locking developers out is just misleading- developers develop, they wont have much use in just opening a project they worked on if they cant edit it.

    >

    > But the reason we get so emotional is that... well, most of us have an emotional bond to Construct 1, 2 and Scirra. And Scirra is/was a great company. I don't know what happened to make them change their minds. Subscriptions suck for indie games dev. Ditto. This is fact. The competition - and we're talking about Unreal, Unity, CryEngine, GMStudio, etc. - understands that. But that's Scirra's decision. And I must respect it because because it's a wonderful company that always was very close to the community.

You do have to technically pay a subscription model with UE4 and Unity, But at least with their models they don't start taking money until you make money, so the amount they take is low in comparison to taking money without you even starting something

The difference is that their engines are proven tech and "Professionals" use it.

If Scirra goes the same way they might never make a cent.

As far as I'm aware "The Next Penelope" is Construct 2's most successful game. Probably financially.

I doubt that game made the Unreal Engine's type budget for them to have had to start paying. Even then to get it on Wii U they are porting the game to Unity since Wii U HTML5 support is weak.

I love Construct for the Event System and the quick turnaround times to features and updates even though Ashley will argue and argue if a feature is needed. I've almost never seen a feature requested by the community being implemented because they really asked for it other than the Multiplayer and this is used as a stick to enforce the "fact that people don't know what they really want".

I'm not sure how many games Ashley has developed but sometimes just because it's thought not to be important for the engine doesn't mean it's not important for game developers/ designers.

However, despite this, useful things get added anyway and I do feel that they at least have a finger on the pulse when it comes to UI, Ease of use but still being powerful to use etc.

I'm here because I find Construct clicks with me and they way I like to work. There is a flow to using it that I appreciate and now that C3 can work on the Mac easier than using Bootcamp or Parallels I intend to actually use it properly as supposed to another tool I was using.

Maybe I can use this forum to also say that imho this needs to change.

At least have an asterix * stating that it's reliant on 3rd party exporters for some of the platforms.

What I do think though is that now we are going to have a split/Fragmented community. We are definitely worse off for it.

Some plugin makers won't be getting C3, so that means less behaviors and plugins perhaps etc.

Hopefully the HTML5 / Online Editor etc attracts more javascript developers so we keep on getting useful behaviors since the track record of getting these done is less than stellar.

The new plugin manager was an excellent idea though.

Anycase, I decided to sign up for the first year and then see how it goes and what's what. It may be a bit premature to judge C3 and Scirra till I haven't actually made a bigger project with it.

The fact that it runs on the Mac now (even if it's in the browser) is welcomed. I'll give Scirra the benefit of the doubt for now. So far C3 is fine for me and I'm cautiously excited for when it gets out of Beta - barring any unforeseen performance issues down the line.

Is this still this going ? Haven't you realized already that if Ashley/Scirra wanted, they could offer C3 + exporters offline, like they are already doing with C2 + NW.js, and keep the subscription only for the online browser (for Chromebook, Android, iPad ... etc) ? It is all about money

It is a middle finger to older users that hoped to get a more professional tool, but actually a great business decision: Why compete on desktop where are lots of other better engines when you can have a niche market like Chromebooks, iPads with zero competition.

Also, from all the markets, the iPhone/iPad users will probably spend 100$ without second thoughts.

So yeah, Fusion 3 is looking batter and better, or if you are more serious and can code, Unity/Unreal are also a good (free) alternative

I don't think they will. Construct 3 does not work on iOS. (iPad/iPhone)

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads

If they make an option. $90 for a year or $9 per month. I would probably buy into that.

Since if you decide not to renew a yearly sub you can still have access to your content say 2 years later by paying the $9.

I imagine though that Scirra does not have the manpower to handle such a system although it should be relatively easy to automate.
