Well... I have already moved on.

I really wanted to get C2.

What I really like about is that not only does it do games, but I was hoping to create interactive content with it... not just games.

That's why I was looking for a non-coding platform for html5... and C2 works great!

I am trying to get away from Adobe CC and finding an alternative to do all my html5 has been a challenge.

But because of the uncertainty of C2's future and the fact I am not doing subscriptions.

I have found GDevelop.... works fine for creating games and some interactivity.

I decided against GMaker because it's not as easy to use.

I was also able to get Hipanni's Hippo Animator and it does a decent job at interactive content.

But in the end... I would of preferred C2.

    It's too bad.

    Tom

    * no disrespect, just a hoping outsider.

A great assurance would be that you kept a downloadable C2 and then kept upgrading C3, C4 etc in a stand alone app

Why can't you offer a C3 as a downloadable perpetual and still do subscriptions?

Just have 2 different pricing plans.

I realize in the long run you can make good income.

But how about offer a subscription that has bonus content or benefits that the stand alone exe doesn't

You can keep charging for upgrades to stand alone.

    For example...

A subscriber gets access to all plugins

While a standalone has to purchase plugins

I just don't get why you would alienate potential customers as myself.

I know that new technology is arising such as Electron/Node.Js that allows a developer to code a stand alone exe but still have a web based app... the best of both worlds. An Electron App can communicate to a web server too.

Not sure what you use to code, but there must be a way to service subscribers and non-subscribers.

As I said before... I am a current Adobe CC subscriber, because I needed to for the freelance work I do.

I am eventually going to dump Adobe because I am spending money and getting nothing when I decide to cut ties...

    I hate renting software.

You guys can do what you want... but you are throwing away money on potential customers

I would consider Construct.... I do like its simplicity, but yet power.

But this version 2 uncertainty and now the crazy subscription has me uncommitted.

It just doesn't make good business sense.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads

    Well... I don't like Godot.

Looks to complicated and it's all scripting.

Even though I know scripting (php, python, pascal, js, vb etc etc)

I don't want to do all scripting for a game... I want building to be visual.

That is why I considered Construct 2.... But can't invest in a stand alone I believe will disappear.

And I am not doing a subscription and get nothing for it at the end.

Tried Unity and Real... nice and powerful. But their licensing and splash screen puts me off.

You can only make games with Unreal (per license)... and Unity is going the expensive subscription too. But you can't make non games without getting enterprise license (CHA-CHING $$$$)

These big game giants are making it harder and harder for newbies to obtain... what are these people thinking??!!

I am looking for something that not only designs games, but can also do interactive content (not games) and output to html5 and standalone exe.

Never heard of it... I'll check it out.

    Davioware

Exactly... I pay all that money to Adobe, and when I get out of my subscription.... I have nothing.

Will not be repeating that again.

I still won't buy C2 because I know in the end... it's life will eventually come to end.

I don't mind upgrading my software. But if an app has no life expectancy, then why jump in.

Adobe has set a bad precedence because they can get away with.

But, Scirra.... small company may not survive if all they offer is a subscription.

I would re-think this plan if I was them.

Looks like my only alternative is GameMaker.

    Hi,

Let me give my observation as an actual Adobe CC Subscriber.

I pay $52 a month and get all their apps. Which is a reasonable price considering what you get and how many apps I use.

Their software is downloadable, but their CC Subscription is just a licensing engine that keeps track of users.

However, Adobe doesn't really upgrade their software with new features except about once a year.

Is it worth it? In the long run, it depends on your use of the software.

However, as a subscription service; it is only good if you are a person who always upgraded your software every year -- before the subscription model.

I personally DO NOT LIKE subscription based plans, especially if the software is browser based. The reasons are...

    1) An online version will never have enough new features added to make paying all those fees worth while.

    2) A browser based app can never have the same power as a Desktop app that has total access to the pc. I know because I do programming for PC software too.

    3) Subscription based software is a bad ideal because it will alienate those who can't afford subscription based.

I am not against browser based software as long it doesn't limit speed and functionality.

And being a programmer myself, I know that having an application that is browser based is much easier to maintain and upgrade.

It is an ideal situation if it can work.

However, running a web application will always have limitations compared to software developed in C/C++ (or similar).

So, if you can offer a web-based app with a downloadable equivalent software... you will have more sales.

I am currently lining up alternative apps to Adobe's CC... and so far I have found all of them but a good replacement for Animate (Flash/Html5). I have one I am trying out; Opus Pro seemed like a good choice, but getting the software and support was very difficult... so I passed.

I then turned to GameMaker and Construct.... because they both have html5 export.

However, I was going to Buy Contruct 2, then i saw Contruct 3 with this ridiculous subscription.

Not only am I not going to buy Contruct 2 because it will eventually die. But, neither am I paying for software that runs on a browser that I have to pay every year, with little major feature releases.

ToonBoom's Harmony has the RIGHT Idea.... offer a subscription and a perpetual license to those who want to buy it out-right!!!

It's just too bad their pricing is ridiculously too high for a lot of beginners.

    Be SMART Scirra!!!

Don't alienate beginners or those who can't afford or don't want to pay a subscription.

There are still a lot of people who would rather buy software out-right and run it for 3-4 years until a justifiable upgrade is offered.

It is actually cheaper for a person to buy it out-right than pay a high fee every year and end up paying for 2-3 versions worth with very little improvement.

    It's too bad.
