  • I have posted a similar idea here. I think it's worth a vote if you guys really want this in Construct.

    https://construct3.ideas.aha.io/ideas/C3-I-94

  • Look, I think some of the comments are justified. Not everything is rosy. The way some people have gone about making their concerns known does come across as overly aggressive though. It also doesn't help the feeling of ..."hey we are all here to get the best from Construct 3"

So I think the energy is just not focused correctly. - from both sides sometimes actually.

The fact that Ashley's blog posted some stuff we really wanted to see. i.e the Performance enhancements etc. doesn't mean it's going to magically get fixed overnight but at least, for me at least, there is a positive future in committing to Construct 3.

In other words, I start making a game now, run into performance issues etc. but hey...at least down the line somewhere, sometime, there is help coming.

The rudimentary 3D mentioned is really a good thing so maybe we can expect some normal maps for sprites, some lighting effects and so on.

Construct performance is always brought up when compared to other engines.

Maybe an update to this post when C3 is out will also set some expectations.

    https://www.scirra.com/blog/ashley/28/t ... ve-engines

It's maybe important to note the difference between Comparing HTML5 performance for the sake of it being HTML5.

Realistically people want to see the performance of C3 running on a desktop or Android tablet for instance against a native compiled app. i.e If I want to make a game and run it on Steam or Wii U or whatever compared to another compiled native engine.

The press about The Next Penelope having had to get people to re-write the game in C++ for Wii U doesn't help either.

I feel that maybe that would give a better perspective and put people's minds at ease when evaluating C3 if a nice comparison can be done again. I know I'm worried about that...although i have not seen any evidence that i need to worry too much (At least on Desktop)

    This part ...

" On the other hand in Construct 2 everything from WebGL shaders to your favourite third-party plugin will work everywhere from iOS to Xbox One."

I think this is an important point to highlight - I would..esp since now charging $99 per year. It provides some explanation as to "Why should I pay $99 a year vs X engine"

I think the C3 "PR" was not handled very well...but it's ok. Seems it's being corrected.

It's amazing what a little more information released to the community can do, rather than having a attitude that, on the surface, feels like "screw you,we dont have to tell you anything, we are steaming ahead come with or leave".

The new suggestion platform is also something good, if it gets taken seriously.

    https://construct3.ideas.aha.io/

    Things are looking up.

The funny thing...and I'm sure Ashley and Tom will probably have a bit of a chuckle at this.....I find the "in Browser experience of C3 Beta" quite different, in a good way. <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" title="Rolling Eyes">

I see you are on mac... Check out my thread how to do it on mac.

Thanks, that worked like a charm

    Havok couple of small corrections/comments:

[quote:2l0ss5bv]Now it can work on iPad etc.

It wont work on your iPad, iPhone etc and probably wont for the foreseeable future. Android support is good though.

Oh, thats a pity. Not a major issue though - doubt I would have used that a lot.

[quote:2l0ss5bv]In a browser...Chrome. So now the Menu button is in the way and oddly placed and one loses quit a bit of space at the top to accommodate the tabs actual browser menu bar and address bar.

[quote:2l0ss5bv]This is a good point. Desktop build will get rid of that, and secondly in Chrome:

    • Open https://editor.construct.net
    • Click options in top right
    • Click 'more tools'
    • Click 'add to desktop'
    • Make sure 'open in new window' is selected

This will create a desktop shortcut where Construct 3 opens without any of the browser UI <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile">

I don't seem to have the "Add to Desktop" option in More tools. Unless I'm missing something?

Oh great. Maybe it was a glitch then? I connected, logged out disconnected and got a page not found error. I tried again now and it seems to log in.

Once a month is fine I just don't want to have to be connected to work if i need to.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads

I'm still on the fence but the last couple of Blog posts have made me take a more positive interest.

Some of the Positives are also negatives. i.e Double Edged sword.

    + Points.

    • Works on my Mac. Used Parallels previously, but nice to know it's now basically "officially supported"
    • Now it can work on iPad etc.
    • Addon Managers seems to be a great idea and I can see it work well if implemented with some sort of online "marketplace" similar to Unity asset store.
    • Seems quite fast currently will see when we load more stuff - if the runtime is being re-written thats also a big positive.
    • Still the great event system - even be a bit cleaner now.

Thats my impressions thus far. It's basically C2 in a browser but buying into other potential I suppose when getting C3.

I'll decide closer to the time if I'll sub even though I absolutely hate the idea. Since I have no way to budget properly with my exchange rate basically going down the tubes every month. I'll probably sub for the first year, and compare it with F3 and GMS2 and then take stock on affordability vs speed vs capability.

IF the subs means that we get exciting features more regularly and in additions of plugins, behaviors and so on it will make it more palatable to pay every year.

  • I think it might be helpful to...in the Event Sheet when clicking on the expressions there is a link to the relevant help for that section.

So there will maybe be a link like in the above pic when you go over each condition, and then depending on where you are will take you to the relevant help file in the manual with maybe an example.

So...in the above example Is Between Angles will go here if clicked on More..

    https://www.scirra.com/manual/131/common-conditions

I find another tool does this and it REALLY helps a lot in speeding up finding info to learn.

  • C3 is currently in our pipipeline

    Fantastic!

  • This should have been posted along with the first info of C3.

This is good news and a positive direction!

  • I've deleted that post as it adds nothing to the discussion and I'm sure you can appreciate how it might be interpreted by us as trying to redirect customers to competitors.

It wasn't my intention to redirect to the competition but I do think it added to this discussion though. The fact that there are unhappy Scirra users already looking at other options.

I do understand why the post was removed though as it does link to the competition's forums directly . Again it wasn't meant as to be malicious but as a "highlight" that a rethink of the subscription or at least the price might be worth it.

  • Interesting you mention GoDot as I see they are also implementing Visual Scripting for the upcoming release. Kind of looks like Unreal Blueprints.

  • Quit a lot of people already wanting to jump ship without seeing the final product.

I can understand it though but it may be a bit soon. Maybe let Scirra unveil it first?

I'm not sure I'll be doing a subscription model either.

Construct is great...I really do like it.

Currently still tinkering away in Unity + Playmaker and some other addons and it's coming along slowly and surely. Every now and then I open up C2 and play a bit with some ideas and have some half finished projects that I'm dabbling with.

Construct 2 is definitely faster than doing stuff in Unity but I know Unity can do anything I want it to game wise and the payoff is that what I learn in 2D also translates to 3D. Whatever game I can think about it's possible.

However there is often un-needed complexity. It's not just jump in and click a few things together and there you have a working prototype.

The main thing I see as a problem here is the Subscription model and a reason I went from Adobe Photoshop/ Illustrator to Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo

The same reason I went from Autodesk even though I have student account to now using Blender3D.

I'm not against subs, but I want to get useful features to me. Doesn't help I tinker around with the product and I pay but I can't get my games on ios or android without using other 3rd party apps etc.

I get the reasoning behind Scirra's move - Scirra is after all not a charity and they want to grow a successful company, to do that they need a revenue stream, but I just don't see myself paying that fee personally - I'm obviously not the target audience, I'm a hobbyist mostly with an idea that if one day I feel something is good enough I'd like to put it out there and then I wont mind to pay for the privilege. I'm from a country that the conversion rate kills the subscription idea for me unless I get monthly benefits thats worth the price. he proposed C3 Sub is half the payment on my 2015 model BMW motorcycle every month.

I bet if they only get a 20% conversion rate they are still way better off financially than now.

For the rest of the people wanting to jump ship.

Where are you wanting to jump to?

Imho Fusion 3 and Unity+ Gameflow or Playmaker are the contenders.

Stencyl...also sub model, Buildbox also a sub model, Gamemaker Studio 2 looks great but the Drag and Drop is limited forcing you to learn a proprietary language...might then as well learn C#.

GameSalad is looking to be a sinking ship with a few scooping out the water but ultimately not as active or as frequently updated as it once were..

If you don't like that why not stay with Construct 3 and see what they offer first. Pay the first month and then see if the tools speed up development, if its slow (I really doubt it will be slow) or if it caters for your needs?

I can see the potential in it. I'm just not going to be paying monthly for it.

  • > Having it in Construct 3 other than a plugin made by some hobbyist (and by NO means do I intend any disrespect to the developer of the Greenworks plugin...he is a lifesaver where Construct 2 could not do this)

    >

If you mean the Construct 2 plugin, we do develop that officially ourselves already.

Then why dont you say so!

Ok fine, I feel better now. Thanks.

Maybe a nice search feature (as perhaps planned already) for all plugin and who the devs are will help people like me who dont spend all their time on the forum.

    Cary on.
