  • sixe That looks fantastic! Absolutely love the style.

  • <font size="2">Hello all.

I'm starting this topic to show progress on a big project I've been working on for quite a while now. Hopefully a few people might take an interest and if so, that'd be great.

If anyone wants to know how I've handled particular aspects or features I'm also happy to share my techniques.

    What is it?

Rustworld is a side-scrolling shooter/platformer with heavy emphasis on survival, set in a persistent post-apocalyptic world.

    Where it's at..

Currently it has the core mechanics down in a basic form, such as aiming, shooting, switching weapons, picking up items, walking, sprinting, jumping, moving between areas and a day/night cycle.

    Where it's going to be..

The emphasis is very much on the persistent world. If you use up all the spirits from a bar to fuel for flamethrower then you'll have to find something else to fuel it. If you destroy a building in a particularly brutal firefight, it will be leveled for good.

Alongside this the world has to be interesting and have some random elements. I always wanted there to be a lot of scope for people to share crazy moments and experiences they had in the game. I wanted it to be different for everyone. As such, there's a day/night cycle and a weather system which affects certain gameplay elements - including a few surprises which occur under certain circumstances!

Here's a short video showing a very early test

    ..and an early screenshot

    Gameplay..

Wandering across the lonely landscape you're chased by machines until you stumble upon an old shed. Within, there's a mysterious blueprint. Exploring the nearby area will grant you access to some of the parts needed to complete the blueprint. Some will just be collected from buildings as you wander, others may already be part of some deadly machines. These machines will try and kill you. Some are rusty at first and prone to glitches, but eventually they will upgrade themselves beyond their original means.

    Features..

If anyone wants info on how to achieve any of these features I'll be more than happy to help, either via private messages or in this thread.

    • Basic specular highlight effect. Not perfect but it adds a bit of depth.
    • Levels loaded from files rather than predetermined layouts. This gives the opportunity for downloadable content as far as levels.
    • Login to Corvidae site for achievement and stat tracking.

(happy to share info on this one but I'm not prepared to let people try it until I've validated user input to avoid malicious attacks on databases)

    • Upgradable/buildable weapons.
    • Dynamic weather.
    • Day/night cycle.

If anyone's interested then I'll try and keep this topic updated regularly :)

  • calyston00 It was good, I enjoyed it - I couldn't beat it though :( I did enjoy the game over screen with the skeleton guy though, that made me chuckle! It was a very charming game. I tried playing it again but I just get a white screen at the moment, not sure why.

  • Thanks Gammabeam! I did have bigger plans for the game but ended up putting most of my time into the usability. I found it was probably too confusing if you didn't know what you had to do and so added all the hints.

I've already got a new version well underway with a bigger galaxy, the ability to probe planets to find the best resources, relics that can be sold, 'Armageddon' events that destroy planets or mines and a vastly improved customer order/trade system. Most importantly though some actual art assets so the planets aren't all the same haha!

I want it to stay simple to play but with a bit of added depth for those who want to sink their teeth into it.

Thanks again for your kind words, it means a lot :)

Also, I really liked Trashoid. The attack method was rather creative and I loved the style of it, it was just genuinely good fun.

  • Congrats to the winners and to everyone that entered!

I enjoyed the pressure of working to a deadline to be honest and having to push it to completion in that time, it was definitely an enjoyable learning experience.

Definitely a lot of variety in the entries and that's great!

  • Ah it's okay, sorted it - stupid mistake my end :) Thanks for your help!

  • Quick question:

I'm trying to preview this locally and have XAMPP set up, trying to request "http://localhost/folder/file.php" as an example but it always triggers the 'on error' event rather than 'on completed'.

Is there anything else I should be doing? Do I need to add anything to my script for previewing or anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

    c) England

Only tested it on Firefox unfortunately due to a lack of time.

And on that note, I'm finally off to bed :) [Jebus, had to edit this twice before I got it right, DEFINITELY bed time - look forward to playing everyone's games when I get up!]

  • This is great! There's definitely scope for lots of different levels, or maybe even a level editor too? I tried it on my phone too but sadly it ran quite slowly, which is odd as I've run other tests with C2's physics fine. Anyway, great work!

  • A delightful little game and a great pitch - very funny and I think you came across as having a really great persona, well done.

As for the game, I particularly liked the use of red as a visual cue to highlight usable objects - very good, but yet the kind of thing even the most seasoned developers often miss.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Lots of water, good for the brain! Aside from that I drink too much Relentless.. but that's only 'cause I got loads from work when the business went under.

I try to listen to more chilled stuff while working - I find heavy distracts me sometimes! A lot of Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and other 80s stuff seems to be on rotation more when I'm working at the mo for some reason!

  • Aw that's a shame you're not enjoying DKCR, I really enjoyed it - it's frustrating at times but I think the level design was excellent. I just didn't enjoy some of the bosses the location of my remote's sync button meant I kept hitting it while playing (stupid GAME's own brand crap).

Spiral Knights? Never heard of that, I think I'll look into it.

How is Darkspore? I've not seen much of it but thought it sounded like an interesting expansion on Spore.
