Both of you completely misinterpreted what I'm saying. I was saying that only placing buttons on your controller interface is a terrible idea. My controller interface is functionally, an extension of the main screen, as well as a controller. The characters fly between controller and screen, talking to you personally, and to each other.

The point I was trying to make is that it's VERY important to take advantage of the phone screens. Don't treat it like developers did the Wii U. It's not just a secondary screen for buttons, or a minimap, or an inventory. It's part of the game. It allows people to interact with a console game with their fingers. Make them touch and interact with the world, don't make them touch and interact with buttons, to then, in turn, interact with things on the screen.

In my game, you pull a gelatinous cutie, and it shoots jelly balls at opponents, you fling it and it flies forward, you tap it and it uses collected items. You can talk to it, it can talk to you, it can talk to another jelly, etc. Each player gets their own Jelly, and each Jelly is an individual. That's just one way to make your game more immersive to the players. There are so many different ways.

I'm just saying, most of the games on Airconsole have shoddy controls, because they just made normal games with touch controls. I'm requesting that people put more effort into their design than that. That's all.

Play Cards Against Humanity on there, and you'll see what I mean. The cards are on your phone, and because people can't see them, it adds mystery. It's like if you put poker on there, it'd be the same thing. It's because the phone serves the purpose of being a direct, interactive extension of the individual. Take advantage of it.

yes, i misinterpreted what your intention was completely...i apologize.

i totally agree with what you stated here, that there is room for a lot of new and creative uses for controllers in airconsole. i think whole new genres of game interaction will come from here as people experiment what a controller can do or what it is meant to do.

i see a whole genre of card and or board based games being able to bring tons of interactivity through the controller interactions.

a game like android: infiltration https://www.amazon.com/Fantasy-Flight-Games-VA79-Infiltration/dp/1616613963 could have the drama and action raised up a big notch with the interaction of the players/controllers with the room based game map.

but i do not disparage simple games with button interfaces. they have their place as well.

good luck with your game. it sounds very interesting.

    well done sir.

you are definitely showing yourself to be an asset to the community.

  • is correct in his assessment of airconsole.

your questions lead me to believe that you have not tried it yourself. please, correct me if i am wrong.

if you try it you will understand what it is and what it is not.

it is primarily a casual/local or communal gaming console for friends. i have tried it myself.

to qualify, i play board games, card games and video games. a lot of times with my small group of gaming friends who are all men and all married. when we get together, the guys game, for example 'lord of the rings lcg' while the women do whatever it is that women do...lol. they had no interest in co-opping to destroy and orc assault with the assistance of gandalf.

    i know - crazy right.

but one night we turned on the t.v. and hooked up airconsole. we scrolled through some of the games and let the ladies pick something to play. for the majority of the night we played a game called 'tower of babel'. it is no aaa sensation to say the least, but, we all laughed, played and engaged with each other for most of the night. playing with the 'ladies' was actually fun and they admitted that playing with us was fun when they could actually be involved.

the point of the phone controllers is that everyone has a phone...so everyone has a controller. you do not need to buy anything to get started playing.

and because you can do anything on a blank canvas, the phone controller is going to allow new interactions and new concepts for group gaming.

just like many years ago when steve ballmer said no one would ever buy a $500 phone with no buttons. people will come to see the phone as a controller to be a very versatile tool. it is not meant to replace a gamepad. it is a different animal. not better or worse, simply different.

i totally agree with you that creating the controller in c2 is a very important feature. in my opinion the most important feature because that is the connection between you and the game.

i guess it takes a lot of work to make it 'simple' for designers and game devs to use.

i also agree with you that traditional gamepad games can have a home on airconsole too, but once you have had twelve people all playing together in one game and having fun...there is no going back.

    just my two cents...

Hi Harrio! I added a new layout and made the flipper and plunger control pads bigger. Flipper controls go all the way to top and bottom now. Give it a try and tell me what you think please.

UPDATE: Added a new layout to Magnetron and made the touch controls bigger for us fat finger people. I am still designing layouts and missions for this game if anyone wants to help I will pay for good layouts. PM me.

does it have to be a non-commercial board design? you know, like not transformers, spawn or guns & roses.

i thought about submitting a design but i do not know if i could get it done in time.

the option of flat or perspective is great.

magnetron runs great on my ipad pro.

a problem i ran into was that after using the plunger to fly the ball, i then had to get ready on the flippers. because the buttons were so high up on the board i would sometimes miss them because i was watching the ball. that would lose focus on the window. then i would have to refocus the window and things would get awkward as far as tracking the ball.

if you made two invisible buttons that covered both sides of the board then the player would not have to worry about where they tapped. of course you would have to make sure it did not over lap the plunger button.

  • lamar

i will try it on the ipad pro today and let you know how that goes.

  • lamar

can you include a 'full-screen' button in the game?

i tried using the full screen button on the arcade but it does not seem to work with my iphone. at least not the way i expected it to.

  • lamar

    will do.

  • OK just excited that I finally have a game that is attracting some attention and made it to the top games list on Scirra arcade.

    lamar

    well deserved sir.

i would love to see this running on my ipad pro or even airconsole.

  • lamar

    love the simpsons board.

i think i may be experiencing repeated ball pass throughs on the flippers because i am a chrome tab whore. does having a lot of tabs open negatively affect the physics performance?

cannot wait for the flat table editor.

i can see younger kids and older ones having a 'ball' with this.
