  • I will contact Steam tech support. However, I would say there's a good chance that Scirra would be the best party to contact them for a couple reasons:

    1) As trivial as the code difference may be, Scirra can at least explain to Valve the architecture of the application to help find the conflict.

    2) I am one of millions of users that purchases from Steam; Scirra is one of hundreds of product providers that licenses their product for Steam. I'm sure they want to keep both of us happy, but I bet they're most likely to listen to a developer.

    3) Ashley's response above assumes that the solution is going to be a change that we as users have to make. That's very possible. But perhaps it's a change Valve needs to make. Perhaps (as unlikely as it seems, given the code similarities between the two versions) it's a change Scirra needs to make. In the latter two cases, I am the middle layer getting in the way.

Just my thoughts. I'll report back if Valve responds.

  • Dig through the forums and you'll find quite a few threads (many resolved bug threads) where users on Steam are unable to get Construct 2 to start up. Usually, a new update or switching from the stable release to the beta or vice versa will fix the problem. But given how often these issues are cropping up, it seems to me there must be a core problem that's going unresolved. Scirra has said it's an issue with the Steam launcher, and that's likely, since I gather these problems don't happen in the release downloaded from Scirra. But it seems to me it's in everyone's interest (Steam, Scirra, the users) to get something like this fixed.

I suppose maybe I'm just frustrated and trying to vent, or maybe hoping that bringing it up more generally will get someone to take it seriously, but I also want to know who else has experienced this problem and if it's as common as it seems. If you work on Steam--especially if you use it regularly and update with every beta version--have you ever had a problem getting the application to start?

  • Not happening with r135. I'll report if it shows up again, but seems like this can be closed. Thanks.

  • New data on this: For the first time, tonight I selected the "View Release Notes" option on the message that notifies me I've upgraded from r132 to r134. I never tried it before because I just assumed it would pull up a browser and then start Construct normally (and crash like it always had). It didn't crash.

Either something was different this time or there's something different in how Construct starts up when you choose to skip the release notes--probably something that interacts with some Steam-specific functionality?

I can't retest this scenario, from what I've been able to tell, until tomorrow. It takes time for it to get to the state where that message shows up again (which also seems peculiar, but maybe there's an explanation).

  • Link to .capx file (required!):

(No .capx to include. This bug occurs before any project is loaded.)

    Steps to reproduce:

    1. In the properties for Construct 2 in Steam, opt into the Beta version.

    2. When Construct is finished updating, start Construct.

    3. A message appears telling you you have updated from r132 to r134. Do not view the revision notes.

    Observed result:

A pop-up message appears that says "Construct 2 game creator has stopped working. A problem cause the program to stop working correctly.Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." The application will then shut down.

Workaround: Deleting the local content for Construct in Steam and reinstalling Construct will eliminate this problem temporarily. You can shut down and restart Construct multiple times after that with no issues. The problem seems to recur a number of hours later if you go to start Construct up again. (Even the prompt about updating from r132 to r134 will appear again, even if you haven't actually updated the software.)

    Expected result:

    Construct 2 starts up normally.

    Browsers affected:

    None

    Operating system & service pack:

    Windows Vista 32-bit (fully updated)

nVidia GeForce 8700M GT (SLI) -- updated graphics drivers

    Construct 2 version:

    r134 (beta)

  • I think I'm getting this same crash. If I uninstall Construct and reinstall it (with betas), it starts up fine for a bit. Then when I come back to it later it will give me a pop-up that says I've updated from v132 to v134 and crash as soon as I dismiss that pop-up. Then it will crash on starting every time until I uninstall and reinstall. Happy to supply more information if there's something that will help.

  • In the past I suggested that we be able to set the vertical and horizontal speed of pathfinding sprites separately. I'm working on an isometric game and I don't need them to follow the grid precisely (as your suggestion would allow), but they don't appear to be moving realistically when they move the same speed across the screen up/down and left/right.

There are definitely lots of useful parameters that could be added to Pathfinding to make it suit other game types and other situations. I hope the Scirra guys return to it to make it even more powerful. It's already been a godsend for me, though.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • This is an issue in my game as well. Good suggestion.

  • Wow, thanks for making an "official" pathfinding module. This is a huge help to my current project.

I do have a suggestion for a possible change to the functionality. I'm making an isometric game, so to get the proper illusion of movement on an isometric grid, I need to set the vertical movement rate separate from the horizontal rate.

Would this be something supportable with the pathfinding behavior?

Nice work, everyone, and congrats on the Steam release!

  • The error must have been in saving, because although it loads now, I lost a chunk of work. Probably failed saving and left a corrupted file or something?

  • Didn't realize there was a new version beyond the one that is downloaded off the main page. The new version seems to have solved it. Thanks!

  • I was working on a project over the last week. Never had any problems with loading it or got any errors. Set it aside for a couple days and now it won't load! When I try to bring i up, I see a loading bar for a split second that disappears. Then Construct returns to how it was before, with no project loaded.

Is this a known issue with 0.99.62?

I also had someone's tutorial project open along with my project the last time I was working on it, and that tutorial project won't load either. I can load other .caps, though.

I'm not sure what the relevant systems specs would be. I'm running Vista on a laptop, Intel Core2 Duo, 2.4 Ghtz. Again, everything else with Construct appears to be working fine.

The project is nothing special (my first stab), but there were hours of work put into it and I'd hate to lose them.

I'm not sure how to attach a file, or if I'm allowed to, but will attach my project if I can.

Thanks for any help you can give!
