  • I didn't realise it's reached such a viable stage.

    What software?

  • The rationale for families fades when you use the family manager, which is much better equipped to add and remove objects from families, as well as sort out private variables, behaviors, effects, and such.

Some more stuff may appear in future but I think what's there now is as much as 95% people will need, and strikes a fair comprimise between bloat and necessity.

  • Yes, the SDK does and will for at least the lifetime of 1.0 require resources I'd imagine - unless there's a clever solution here.

Does Express compile resources at all, or can you just not edit them through an editor? If it's the former, you should be able to do it by hand, and it could work out OK.

  • For now I'd do it with boxes and text; hopefully someone will make a popup menu object when the menu editor and menu resources work perfectly.

  • In the latest builds - like 0.98.9 - the overlapping condition has been redone to make it pick objects in pairs; imagine for example I have 10 object A's overlapping 10 object B's. In old versions it would not necessarily pair the collisions exactly, so you'd have in effect the wrong objects picked. Now the A's will be picked with their respective B's.

I can't imagine a situation where you'd want the old behavior really, so I'm not convinced using overlapping at offset is the correct way to code your game. What are you trying to achieve exactly?

  • I can't see the real benefit, it takes more space and takes longer to view, at least from those screenshots. I did briefly consider once upon a time - aka a long time ago - a flowchart editor, but it's definitely not as intuitive in most cases as the current editor.

  • You already can, but now sounds and music are separate from files.

  • What do you mean?

  • Has the potential to get very cluttered really.. I don't see the problem currently myself; allows me to easily change and fiddle with private variables.

  • Discuss it here, if it's a good idea, stick it on the tracker for someone to get round to .

  • Yeah, always use PNG's, it'll take the same space when exported as a JPEG, and the same VRAM.

  • There's not really much to say here, as a lot has been said in the forum and on the chat.

Our basic status for 0.99 is:

    • New renderer: This is mostly done, some plugins still need porting, and there are a few small issues. There's been several improvements in speed, rendering quality, and a new shader to make text look better until we find a better solution. (On a side note here, we really have been looking, and the more you look, the more you find out that normal Direct-X text rendering is absolutely useless. You can read about it here if you wish).
    • Organisation and IDE improvements: The new project bar is complete, as shown below. This now features an organised overview of each application, showing object folders, global variables, sound, music, files, etc, all fully editable from one area. Object folders are implemented both here and in the object bar, to make organising large projects much simpler, and faciliate finding objects you need to find. Other changes to the IDE include a box for naming and picking a category in the insert object dialog, independent picking of samplers per layer, some crucial fixes which could cause crashes when previewing (probably the cause behind most IDE crashes now), and the fixing of a DLL issue which would stop plugins loading on some computers.
    • Still to come: We've yet to really begin the new control system, due to the large amounts of time the above two overhauls have taken. This will support all controllers (including XBox 360 controllers) as well as multiple players and runtime defineable controls. Another new neat feature which probably won't make 0.99, but will follow shortly after, are custom collision masks, which can be drawn via the picture editor. In addition, several new plugins are in development, including a tileset plugin, an inventory plugin, and an online plugin.
