Thanks for your reply and advice and have took on board what you suggested.

I've added the noise and a mist effect iv'e also made the backdrops darker and removed saturation, I want to keep the player as he is to add a stylized look to it. It all makes a huge difference to the mood of the game so thanks for your suggestions.

here is a video link, sorry for the quality is not great and fps is down a little. I also added some music over it to further capture the mood.

  • a rough sample of gameplay.

  • Hey bruno thanks for the reply. I cant seem to update the software because of browser issues so i cant run this carpx.

    currently using version r190.

  • Hey i have a problem and I'm hoping one of you guys can help me with it.

What way would i go about setting a global player position on the start of a layout?

so say the player is on the first layout and when he walks off screen i want him to appear on the next layout at his new position but i don't want him jumping back on the first layout before switching.

    Iv'e tried this

If player is outside layout> go to next layout

    set player X,Y to yada

Iv'e also tried a collision object so

if player is on collision with yada> go to next layout

    set player X,Y to yada

when i do either of these, the player jumps back to the new position before the next layout loads. Any ideas?

what im looking for is just your run of the mill Prince of Persia, Zelda screen behavior

  • Thank you for your reply.

I was starting to think that this was a hopeless attempt, I don't think many people have played the original. I can see those glitches myself and am working on them. The aim here is to get it to play like the actual game because i want to use it for my own game. Once i get it the way i want, i will then start to replace the sprites, backdrops and bounding boxes n such, i figured this was a good way to get some half good controls working.

    thanks

  • Hi guys much appreciate the replies thanks

    Somebody

I really dig your drawings but to be honest although the first one is more technically accurate, the second one appeals to me more, the reason is because i have a 2d horror game in mind so i can visualize that character as pixel art but can only see the other one as a 3d model. i totally get what your saying about the proportions now. Big heads sorta funny thing.

I don't intend to copy these graphics with such detail. These guys will be flat 2d characters

here's a rough example of what im trying to go for with the game.

  • Horror game

  • Hi, thanks for your reply much appreciated. I was thinking a 2d pixel based story game so these characters would be flat I did these as a rough example for the mood and looks. I'm not sure what you mean by "realistic" horror game? In most horror games I've seen the enemies are not in proportion, which is the whole scary thing IMO.

I like the atmosphere and mood of Dead Space, Silent Hill and i would love the challenge of trying to recreate that in 2d.

Im sure it's been done before but there's not enough 2d SH games

  • Hi guys, i was wondering what you think of these as enemy characters for a horror game?

  • Hi, thanks for your feedback. Its always good to hear that someone likes your work but it's always better to hear what people don't like or the things that can be improved and in this case there is still a lot to do on it and plenty of areas that bug me that need to be tweeked but i will get to them eventually.

    In regards to your questions.

Two reasons why i didn't use the up arrow for jump.

    1. If the player has to use both hands on the keyboard to play the game it's my belief that the player is more engaged with it ( less likely to go yada yada with one hand.

    2. More importantly i keep this key free because later on i might want to add flying or overhead gameplay and it's much easier to not have it assigned to other controls. Generally i like to keep all character movements for all layouts on one data sheet.

As for the screen going black, this is just because it's a one stage demo. I could have set it to start over again but once you tested it i didn't see the need for more play on it. I have game over and start menus and stage select menus set up, but that's not for this demo as those menus are not ready.

thanks for your questions and interest
