SecondDimension's Forum Posts

  • PixelMonkey that's a shame, I enjoyed your last two entries. Ours is going OK, but we're starting to say "we'll fix that later" a bit too much

  • I'm pretty happy with that theme, good luck everyone

  • Hi everyone, I'm in again for Ludum Dare and using C2, really looking forward to it!

I found it helps to have a thread here on the forum, definitely post your game here. It helps develop a nice little C2 sub-community within Ludum Dare, and it means you should get a few votes and comments even if you don't have time to get your game onto the front page. Having said that, if this is your first LD then do try and rate as many games as possible, and leave a constructive comment.

Also, I have created some public Spotify playlists for this Ludum Dare. I have made them collaborative, so if anybody wants to add anything then go for it.

    Standard Playlist Link

    Quieter Playlist Link

    Instrumental Playlist. Link

What is the theme you're fancying the most ?

I think Beneath the Surface and We Must Go Deeper are my favourites. Good luck everyone!

  • Seriously, is this something to worry about? I mean I just make games for fun. Are they going to sue me and take my car and my house? Am I more at risk being an individual hobbyist than a registered company? Does it matter that I've never made any money from games?

All interesting questions that I don't know the answers to.

  • Did anyone do this? I ended up making a functioning game with horrible graphics! Check it out here:

  • Sorry to bring this up again, but today my C2 was slow and unusable for about 30 minutes, which ended in a complete crash (had to CTRL+ALT+DELETE it). Anyway when I restarted, it turns out my Steam client required an update. This has happened to me enough times to not be a coincidence I think.

  • I'd love to participate in a C2 game jam! I did notice that GM, Stencyl and MMF2 all seem to have an official one of their own.

I think a forum-run thing with moderator support would probably be best.

It would probably work best if it was infrequent, like just once or twice a year, and it would be preferable if it didn't clash with any of the big well-established jams.

I'd be happy to help with any organisation etc if I was needed

  • Well we didn't register a company, we just wanted a team name for when the 3 of us enter Ludum Dare and so on. It's just a hobby, but we still wanted a logo and a website, mainly because it was all pretty fun to set up. Does this approach come across as being unprofessional? At no point anywhere do we say we're a 'company'.

If we ever make anything good then maybe we might take it to the next level, and we'd already have the bare bones of a website/logo set up. I really don't see the harm in doing this stuff, as long as you're honest about your goals/setup and you aren't trying to deceive anybody.

(PS, I've just given myself a new job title: 'Director of Awesome')

  • Yeah sorry, I just noticed this thread was a bit out of date. I have to say that although I do still have issues, things have improved a hell of a lot since I first purchased C2, which is all I can ask really, so thanks.

  • Hey everyone, I have had Steam issues both on my crappy old Vista PC and again on my shiny new 1k Windows 8 PC. I appreciate it's a really difficult thing for Scirra to solve if the code is almost identical, but I think there definitely is a problem somewhere.

The only slightly helpful things I have to offer are my personal observations, namely that I almost always experience a crash when the Steam 'Update News' dialogue appears. I turned this off and it has helped me to reduce the crashes for sure. I can't be certain on this next bit, but I believe I also noticed a few issues when another Steam game starts to update. So it could be along these lines, or that could be a complete red herring.

The crashes are slightly less on my new PC, but one thing that persists is this: after a while using C2, and seemingly at random, the event sheet editor will be come extremely slow. It practically grinds to a halt when you try to edit a parameter and it loads the 'objects with expressions' box. I too thought this was an issue with my machine until I upgraded

  • Just in case anyone else ever searches for this, I managed to solve it myself. I suspect this method is a very inefficient brute force solution, so if anyone has a better one let me know.

New link is below, it needs some variables to make it easy to edit, but it does the job as a starting point.

  • Hey I haven't added one of these yet. Here's me looking pretty modest:

  • Hi everyone,

I tried searching for this, and was surprised that I couldn't really find anything. I just want a way of implementing a moving platform for a top-down game, to fit with the 8-direction behaviour.

I have attached my first attempt in a test capx here:

    TopDownTest (Dropbox)

So this test works, sort of. It's all OK, except for one issue: when you are on a platform that is moving along the Y axis, moving the player left or right doesn't quite work (with the same issue on a platform moving in X).

I was thinking that I need to set the Y vector to something like max(player.vectorY,platform.dy) but that would only work when the platform was moving down, plus I'd have to do the same in the x axis and then I'd struggle when the platform was moving diagonally. It is annoying that setting the player 8direction xvector to the platform custom movement dx doesn't make the player move at the same rate as the platform!

Basically I'm not clever enough, so any ideas would be appreciated

  • I bought it on Steam and I do have issues with crashes etc. It's better now than it was, but I kind of wish I had purchased it directly as a standalone application.

  • Just rated all the ones on the page, great work everyone
