It would help if you mentioned any particular style or dimensions if you have any that you want someone to stick to?

I watched the youtube link, its really good..

    Thanks =]

I forgot to update the link to a clickable one when I hit 500rep but It's fixed now for future viewers :P

  • Yeah, so no HTML5 support.

It's still good news to know =]

    Thanks for sharing :P

  • This is a great idea!

  • +1 From me too, I love this about all the other applications I use. Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush.... and so on!

It really does make things easier on your eyes, not nearly as many headaches.

  • I've been dealing with some real life stuff that has taken my attention away from adding to these sprites but I have finally hit 500rep and am able to post links, so here is an early version of the sprites and the core .pdn file for anyone interested.

I will be updating them, not absolutely everything is included here but more than enough for right now should be there to construct a reasonable level, at least until I get to finish them up =]

    So... For now, enjoy!

Also, these are free to use for your personal or commercial games, just give me credit for creating these if you use them. That's all I ask =]

  • Nope, basically it's a turn based multiplayer game, there going to be a community and you can challenge other people to battles. It's kinda hard to explain...

Oh ok, I only asked because I was trying to get a better understanding of the sprites you would need.

I think I understand from what you just said, the kind of game you're hoping to create.

  • is the game going to play like the old school Final Fantasy titles?

Hi :) I looked at the spriters resourse, but they didn't have the style of pixel art I wanted.

Also I dont really have the money to buy the art either.

But I am nterested in that tutorial you mentioned, I looked in the forum but didnt find it, could you post a link please?

To be honest, you can't really be picky when looking for 'free' art for something like this. I see a lot of people asking for free stuff but when presented with solutions or resources they say things like "nah, I need something more" or something like that. That luxury is kind of void without either doing it yourself or paying for it.

Unless of course you're fortunate enough to come across an artist that likes what you're working on or just has the time and wants to work with you in creating the art that you would like.

With that said, I think that your best bet would be to look for the 'style' that you want which in your case is Habbo related. You can just gather some reference sprites for the style and then practice trying to recreate them yourself, editing along the way. Animating them will require more time and a little more effort though and finding all of what you asked for for free will be tough and chances are the art might not match up, but I'm sure you can find some nice free assets as placeholders to get your project going.

I would post some links to a few places but I can't post links until 500rep and if you just Google'd a few things the first couple of links would most likely be what I was going to post anyhow.

Search through DeviantArt for Pixel Art tutorials, you will find almost if not all of the information you need to get started on creating your own pixel art and if you want to get a more visual/audio learning experience then there is a pixel art course by CGCookie under the ConceptCookie section. Which I think is the one that you were already linked to.

Try looking at some platformer sprites too when searching on Google instead of just typing RPG because for your battle scenes they should be very usable and using them as reference for your attacks will yield a nicer set of moves and or specials. Just a suggestion for someone new, just getting into it. I hope you find what you're looking for or at least find what you need to be able to make your own!

    Good Luck

  • Hello everyone, I'm Patrick...

I've already made a few posts on the forums so far but I haven't introduced myself properly.

I'm a 3D Animator & Artist (primarily) but I also tackle Pixel Art. I'm here to mess around with construct and make a few decent 2d games, I really like it so far and hope to achieve a few decent playable games out of it that play well and hopefully look pretty =]

I'm thinking of posting a tutorial a week on my YouTube channel regarding pixel art and animating it, I have not yet decided when or if I will go through with it but I will be contributing to the community and giving out a couple of free sprite packs that I'm working on, but after that I am looking to start working on a personal project, then we will see how that goes :P

Some members here seem to have created some really great things, whether they be works in progress or fully functioning games, they're enjoyable and reek of potential... I hope to have a lot of fun working with Construct2 and I don't doubt that I will!

Thanks for reading and Kind Regards!

  • Patriick TELLES0808 AnD4D OrangeTapioca Rory Okay, so I made a second video, it goes more in-depth about the gameplay and stuff, Haven't added it to the campaign, but I wanted to see what you guys think. youtube.com/watch

Well I'll have to give you kudos for trying again, and honestly. Now I know more about the game so thank you, but I think you would need to have another attempt but I'm going to try and offer some pointers and not just be an ass and not give reason for saying that.

I do love the idea behind the game too by the way, it sounds interesting andd quite fun...

I saw someone else mention tha tit didn't look like you cared too much, this is the impression you kind of give at times on the video from looking away from the camer and such but (I guess it could also be nerves of recording?) It appears as if you're not paying too much attention, that can be fixed easily enough though!

Instead of holding the camera up and moving around so much I suggest maybe setting it down on something sturdy and if you want to move around and wave your arms and such as some people tend to do when explaining things then it shouldn't be as distracting/disruptive.

With all of that said I pretty much agree with Dave Hailwood, he hit the nail on the head with his response and has said some of which I would have liked to have gotten out but perhaps in better words.

    InvaderX

I don't think the new video is playing to any of your projects strengths, or likely to win over investors. The main reason for this is that for the most part it's treating the viewers to an up the nose Worms Eye View of your face, and the constant movement of the chair makes everything a bit wobbly. I'm afraid I gave up watching after the first two minutes.

Now, to play to your strengths - you have a voice over guy, so use him to do all the talking. Put that over any in game footage, or stills you may have, giving descriptions of game play elements that might set your game aside from the hundreds of other kick starters out there. Try to resist saying things like 'its going to be cool' or 'hey, this is really awesome' and show the viewers what's awesome about it.

One of the biggest strengths you have at the moment is you respond well to others criticism. If you keep up with that sort of attitude, I'm sure that in time you'll go on to do well. Although I doubt this Kickstarter will succeed as you're asking for a lot of money and not yet giving people enough incentive to invest, I'm sure that you'll learn a lot from the process and hit back stronger and harder the next time.

Whatever happens, finish that game (I'm sure you can make it without financial investment. That's what being a hobbyist game maker is all about!) and keep on listening to the advice of the good folk on this site. They've helped me out a lot - half of the time without even realising it.

I would love to see this project finished, I honestly don't think the project would die without getting funded but I know for sure it would make things easier! At least with Kickstarter, if you fail. You can always start another and try again at a later point to help out.

I am surprised as how well you've taken the feedback/criticism so far, at least you're trying. Some people would just get annoyed and give up or get knocked back and the attitude you show for getting right back and trying again is good in my eyes... You will surely succeed if you keep at that as Dave has said.

The best advice here has to be to get your voice actor to help with the talking and such... Hopefully he is available?

I hope some of what I have said helps and that things go well, I will keep my eyes on Bevar, I like the sound of it so far.

  • Patriick: You can now move three clods of green dirt onto each other to get a Ladder

    Here is the construction chain.

    Dirt + Dirt = Food

    Dirt + Food = Ladder

As before, Ladders cannot be moved around. So, make sure you place them when you absolutely need them.

    <img src="http://gameswarp.com/studio/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ladders.jpg" border="0" />

sved: Hmm... Let me think about that. Hazards... Globs with other behaviors are on my mind, but only in Nurture II.

    You sir, are awesome!!

Also, creating a jump animation for that type of sprite wouldn't be too difficult really, It will simply require a little squash and stretch to look decent.

  • Patriick: Thanks for the comments!

sved: As for the ones who land on food, one way is to put tiles on either side of the food and they will walk off. You are right, one way is to let all the Globs fall to the floor, but that's going to be quite a lot of work. I have been creating caverns on multi-levels and that seems to work very well for me.

cklester: I just added a Warp Effect to the tilebackground. The Tile Background was taken off this great seamless art resource - DinPattern

I am intending to tweak the game a bit to make it slightly harder. Like, let the Globs die off faster or something as they evolve.

There is also a possibility of doing Nurture II - adding even more new features and mechanics.

What would you like to see added?

I would like to see the ability to make the enemy go up by 1 block? as opposed to moving just left and right

  • HAHAHA... The last two posts are hilarious!

  • There are plenty of resources for learning how to do pixel art, however people may learn differently and sometimes a structured course with a teacher is the best method for them.

Since this topic came up I had to look way into the past to find some of the forgotten bookmarks I had years ago.

So you want to be a pixel artist?

While I was looking for it I also found a short and sweet guide here

    Introduction to Pixelart ?

It's a good tutorial with some much needed basics. Here's some other resources worth checking out:

    Pixel art tutorial on OpenGameArt.org

PixelJoint's list of onsite and offsite tutorials.

Edit: Figured I'd plug it here. While Photoshop/GIMP are useful for more modern sprite creation (Which the course covers and a lot of tutorials don't), I occasionally use two other useful programs:

ASEprite <- Image editing program designed for sprites and animating sprites.

Pyxel Edit <- Tile editing program that exports tilemaps as psuedo-CSV or XML and the tileset as PNG. <font size="2">Save format can be opened with ZIP/RAR to extract individual tile images. Animation is planned and he hopes to start updating again this summer.</font>

I agree, that is why I mentioned it could be beneficial for some =]

I love those programs, I also use Graphics Gale but Pyxel Edit is pretty awesome!
