  • Well, I'm creating a 2D game for my Minor at the moment. The technical part is going to be alright since Construct is a pretty easy to use engine and I've got enough experience in scripting and building things.

But I'm not great in graphics. Last week I've tried to get into digital painting, which works out pretty well. I've also managed to make some good animations with Animestudio as well. I'm currently looking into vector graphics with illustrator (i thought your graphics were made with illustrator since they look so sharp and clean).

Guessing from your portfolio, you have a lot of experience with digital painting. But I didn't expect the graphics from Yokai to be painted as well. This image for example: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dpKc ... naroud.jpg (It's so clean!)

I'm currently looking for the most efficient way for me to make my graphics. Do you have any tips for me? Maybe some tutorials or websites that are worth it to look into?

    Really love your style!

  • Wow that looks so great!

edit: May I ask how you draw your characters and visuals?

  • Too bad I'm broke right now. I love the support for Mac! (And the idea generally)

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • yeah now there's you and Shviller talking about a cartoonist..

  • Hey tulamide,

I really like the water effect in the fluid2.cap and I'm trying to use it in my game.

I've copied the objects, events and layer settings, but it doesn't work. What else do I have to do to get this to work?

    Thanks in advance!

  • pretty boring when I'm the only one there..

  • I'm not saying ignore the GDC talks and guys like Jon Blow, because it's always good to keep informed on the current state of gaming. But I will say don't take everything you hear as gospel.

That's true, but when these talks limit your creative process (prevent you from coming up with idea's because you think about the information from the presentations all the time) I suggest you just take a break from them for a week, maybe two.

I took a 1 week break from reading articles and noticed that I can think a bit more clear now. It might sound crazy, but my head was filled with all the information that I've read which prevented me to think about my own projects.

  • I've been dealing with this problem for about three weeks now. I've read so many articles on The Escapist, Gamasutra and books about game design that I wasn't able to come up with a fresh idea anymore.

    My solution:

Take a break from the articles. They're obviously cluttering your head too much. You can always read more of them when you have a basic idea for your game and reshape your concept to the things you read and find interesting.

Try not to think about games too much. Focus on other things and make sure that you have a notebook with you at all times. A lot of people come up with their best idea's when they're doing something else. (I tend to come up with a lot of things when I'm on a train ride)

Think about what inspired you in the past. I get inspired by movies and great storytelling. Last night I've watched Inception (which made me think of the Matrix and the Animatrix) and I came up with a few basic concepts that I might work out into a game.

Write down every idea that pops into your head. This way you will not forget idea's and more importantly, idea's that you don't like don't pop up all the time. You've written them down, so you don't have to think about them all the time.

Try to brainstorm with your programmer. Write everything you two come up with down on a piece of paper. And remember that not a single idea is a bad idea. When you come up with a 'bad' idea, he might get inspired and think of something awesome. (There is a lot of information about brainstorming, try to find some articles).

You can always post some idea's on this forum. We can give you feedback and maybe send you in the right direction.

Oh and one more thing: When you think of something that might be fun, just prototype it and show it to others. Don't think about the story, the graphics, sound etc. Just the basic mechanics. Construct is an awesome platform to do this with.

  • You're even on the escapist: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/vi ... ibute-Game

  • Uploaded a new build. If you got a crash earlier, please try this one.

It works on the Virtual Windows XP now. Somehow the game started pretty dark, but when I entered the first room, it was back to normal. The game is really good! I do miss a little feedback here and there (never played Metroid prime, so I don't know what some things are (the saving area for example)). But it's pretty addictive to play!

  • I tried it on a Virtual Windows XP (I'm on a Macbook), that might cause the problem.

I don't have any problems with other games, but I can't use Construct with python on the Virtual Windows XP.

edit: Trying on a different windows xp partition with Boot Camp now

  • The url didn't work for me. This one did: http://www.metroid-database.com/fanapps.php

Edit: Tried to launch the game but it didn't work for me. The game didn't start when I pressed 'Enter'. It didn't respond to any key presses.

ControlConfig didn't launch, I got this error: 'Failed to launch plugin C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\cap8.tmp\5.csx (14001)'

  • A mobile version of the website would be nice as well. (especially if there is a games showcase, which is easy to find. Since some mobile devices support HTML, you could go to the website to play games!)

  • I'm not sure if C2 will ever have a multiplayer option (I'd love one!), but you could rent out a small amount of server space and bandwidth for users to test out the multiplayer options.

Users who don't have a server can create a game or try out the function without having to rent a whole server and setting up the whole thing. (And for testing purposes, they don't need a lot of server bandwidth and space and probably don't need to connect more than 2 computers).

In return, you could ask for a monthly fee or something like that.

The profile idea sounds pretty good. It'd also be a good idea to show off a few awesome games made with C2. To give people an idea of what they can do with the engine.

  • Yeah, maybe I've done something wrong with the VM or I might have installed a wrong version of Windows XP or something. (Couldn't find my Windows XP CD, so I downloaded a copy)..

I'll try it out with another version of Windows XP some time and post the result here (just in case anyone else walks into this problem)
