  • I'd like to hear your reasons why you think construct is better than mmf2.

I disagree but I think this could be a very constructive discussion and give ashley and the others something to think about and correct in construct 2.

Here's some of things that I think are more important:

Mmf2 has countless extensions construct doesn't (among others, a online/networking plugin), is much more stable, the community is much bigger, the games made with it run perfectly with no compatibility problems in 99% of the time, but in the other hand lacked construct's awesome rts behavior, shadow casting and I preferred construct's way of handling variables.

  • Yes me too, because it's free. But I wouldn't spend more money in a similar program because of a couple of improvements.

  • MikeD : Yes i have mmf2 dev and it's absolutely fantastic. But CS2 is in it's infancy stage so comparing any other games app would be kinda unfair at this stage don't you think.

I am not comparing mmf2 with what construct 2 is right now, I'm comparing it with what I imagine construct 2 will be once it reaches 1.0, perfectly stable and with all the announced features in.

[quote:1jqq7i4l]Why does anyone choose Windows over Linux when they pretty much do the same thing and Linux is free? There are a lot of factors that go in to what software people choose. It's not just about certain features, or the price, or the UI. It's the whole thing, right down to the details.

Because with linux you can only run a tiny portion of the programs and games windows can, and windows comes bundled with most computers, among other smaller reasons.

Those aren't details, they are the difference between a customer choosing one product over another, and that's what construct 2 seem to lack.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • You all seem to be forgetting multimedia fusion 2, they already have flash exporters, and are finishing the html5 and iOS one (which will almost certainly already be available by the time c2 is released).

The interface is very similar, mmf2 is way better supported, with a huge community and tons of extensions, more exporters and has matured very well along the years, to the point that it's 99% bug-free now.

What will make construct 2 a viable alternative, let alone a superior product ?

  • Sadly what you said in that topic didn't really reassure me.

Obviously, you are motivated to do better than clickteam or yoyo games did with their products, but I don't see how you are planning to do it.

Since the competition is already well established in the market, I'd say 99% of your customers are going to be previous mmf or game maker users, so you really need something to motivate them to abandon their software of choice and choose c2 instead.

Until now I haven't heard of a single feature that the competition doesn't have, let alone one that would make it stand out.

If it's going to be better than mmf or game maker is very subjective and unpredictable since we don't know how they are going to be by the time construct 2's 1.0 version is released.

My suggestion would be to follow yoyo games's example, and go with a free and a paid version. It worked for them so in theory it should work for you two I think. When I mean free version I don't mean construct 0.xx I mean a solid product with a few features cut from the "pro" version for example and/or forcing a non-commercial license.

  • Is this time limit thing going to be standard from now on ?

I'm not opposed to construct 2 following a commercial route and trying to get some extra income, but seeing that a barely usable alpha version is already bundled with imposed limitations kind of kills it for me.

I'm sorry to say this, but as other users pointed out, I have a bad feeling about all this.

Construct 2 isn't the only tool of this genre in the market, but it's trying to compete with more established companies who already built a strong userbase such as game maker and mmf2 (which remember are working on html5 exporters and already have flash and iOS exporters).

Construct had the edge of being free for anyone to download, so without any feature to make it stand out of the crowd I can only see construct 2 go down the drain which is a shame because the project showed a huge potential.

I really hope you consider what you are doing and the direction the project is taking.

  • Awesome work !

Next up in release 31: Sound *hint *hint

  • Hum.. I think you are putting your expectations way too high.

I can tell you from personal experience this isn't going to steam or impulse. I even doubt you'll sell more than 5 units, if any.

I don't want to shatter your hopes like this but you have to be realistic or you'll be jumping from disappointment to disappointment.

My recommendation is that you put this and your next games out as freeware until your name is out there and your games mildly known, and only then work your ass off in a commercial game.

    Good luck !

  • I'm surprised no one spoke about the lack of sound support, or am I missing something ?

I've got to say, construct2 shows a tremendous potential it will be really interesting to see how it develops

  • Awesome update ! Can't wait to grab the stable version of this

  • <img src="http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/5876/workinon.png">

  • just awesome

  • That crash on close was a very silly mistake and is fixed..

With regard to the network plugin, soon! Really, soon!

  • wow awesome !!

  • It's amazing how fast Construct is getting stable !

I'd say Construct is now 85% stable, in contrast with the about 50% of the versions before 0.90.

    Wonderful work !
