And the winner for most original storyline goes to!

Look forward to seeing it completed!

  • > the video should be longer than 60 seconds, just keep the actual clips short so that things stay interesting.

    >

Each clip should be only long enough to demonstrate the features that the clip is showing off. Once it has shown what it can do, there's no need to show it do something again. Just move to the next clip. When you show a person something similar to what they've already seen, they can lose attention.

How about categories? For the initial submissions? Then when it comes time to voting. People vote the best of each category, and the winners are then used in the showreel. That way it could avoid too many duplicates in the final video, but not prevent people from submitting similar things to start with.

  • 10 second max for a clip with the majority being 5 seconds. We want to keep the attention of the viewers and make them want to see more. the max length of the preview shroud be 60 seconds.

We need a good sound track started too.

Well the submission would be 60 seconds, to give the one making the vid, plenty to choose from per submission, then he/she can hopefully match it better to the music. Agreed though, each "segment" in the final video shouldn't be too long.

And yeah, a custom soundtrack would be helpful wouldn't it lol. But none of that hiphopcrap or trance or shit like that lol. Or Requiem for a Dream. I will kill everyone slowly with a spoon, if that damn piece of overused trash is used for yet another youtube video, LOL!

  • Try Construct 3

  • Great idea!

First and foremost there needs to be a guideline set up so everyone will produce to the same size and format. Then a real deadline (with timely reminders). I am sure people will forget or get busy. But this could really boost the user base.

Well size and format wont matter for the executables. For those providing video. I reckon HD 720p, no audio, and a maximum of 60 seconds long. Though obviously the full 60 seconds might not be used on each submission, it'll depend on the one putting the video together. It should also be in a usable format, eg: mpeg1 format, none of that queer quicktime stuff. Executables should include instructions on what to do with it, and not run in full screen.

In both cases, they should focus on something specific and not be mini trailers in themselves (cause all of that would simply get stripped out anyway).

    What do you think?

  • Ooooh, looks so much nicer! Weird the difference such a little thing makes (helps tons when you got a whole load of tabs open too heh).

    Nice one Ashley!

(typed really quickly to avoid getting cut off with another bloody power cut)

  • Site and forum could use a favicon I reckon. Just a little thing, wouldn't hurt to have.

  • Wine works perfectly. Wine for OSX also works perfectly. The games might crash on exit, but big deal.

If it's crashing on exit, it's not working perfectly.

  • Seconded, chances are it wasn't installed correctly.

  • Awesome, glad you guys like the idea! Agreed that folk who are interested could start on things now, or finish up stuff they're working on already. Even if it ends up not being an official showreel, it'll still be great to have something with current examples in. Could be a new one each year around this time, see how things develop and change over the course of 12 months.

I've edited my first post to credit you for the original montage video, since the idea to do one was yours to begin with almost a year ago

    StAtrill

I think the deadline should be at least a few months away. I know quite a few users who are working on some really impressive stuff that would look great added to a showreel and would deserve the chance to submit something.

    abhilash2863

A few months I think would be fair, and it might then coincide with v1.0 (with luck).

Ashley, David, any official opinion on this? Don't want to step on any toes if you guys already have something planned.

  • First, if I remember correctly, for an external file in the same folder I use:

    AppPath + "file.txt"

    right?

Second, are there any limits to what extension I can use (eg. only .txt)?

Finally, what format do I put organize the file data in? I know for .ini you have to use

    "[Heading]

    Name=Value"

but what do I use for the List Object?

    AppPath & "file.txt"

And you can use any extension, make up your own etc. from what I can tell you can do that with practically any file construct can recognize and they'll still work.

  • Hmm, last time I had a play around with that jump sustain, it worked fine. Have you tried increasing the amount?

  • yea for sure!, i and i know a whole bunch of other users have a whole bunch awesome of things that are just lying around that would be perfect for this.

That's the sort of thing I was hoping for!

  • You could always give them more organized names which would make them easier to find until/if you get your wish.

  • So you've probably all seen the construct montage video on youtube that was done almost a year ago by hero_bash from this very forum.

    Subscribe to Construct videos now

Which showed some really impressive stuff back then, but clearly is showing it's age now. So how about we think of having an official one? All credit to hero_bash of course, as I'm simply updating his idea of a montage.

    Here's my suggestion.

    ----------------------------

Decide on a date a few months from now where all entries have to be ready by. Then anyone can submit a creation of their own. At which point after the deadline, they're all voted on and the X highest voted submissions are put together into a complete video that really shows off the abilities of construct as it is today.

    Submissions

Submissions can be anything, games, demo's, fancy effect usage or other impressive feature of construct that can be seen clearly in a visual form. Anything that looks impressive and has come from construct.

Submissions can either be a short executable, set up to play automatically. OR a recorded video. The latter should be recorded at a high resolution (so the final completed video can be viewed in HD format and not look blurry or mismatched between the video's). In either cases, no sound would be required as a track could be used over the entire video.

Rules and such can be worked out later if anyone is up for this, this is just an idea/suggestion right now. But it might give a few people something to aim for, and gets to show off construct, while the users get to participate and vote on what gets included.

So what do people think? Reckon we should try do something like this?

  • There's already another group!

Yeah like I said in the first post, it's more awesome than the group! Can't be a fan of a group hehe.
