Read neverk's full quote, In the end it says "And that's kind of future proof path." Sounds like a well-thought-out plan to me.
If you are actually thinking long term toward a proven deliverable product for phone/tablet/computer/console, other engines have a much better track record than construct.
What is wrong with using the best tool for the job?
Nothing is future proof.
If you want something with a better track record Unity and Unreal Engine is way way above and beyond the rest.
If he wants a well thought out plan that's more future proof imho Learning C# / C++ is a better way to go. Then you never have to worry about paying for engines etc.
That doesnt mean other people have the same motivations or goals.
I want to develop games. I want to think it out, make it and then be able to finish them and put it out there.
I have a budget that i look at when checking how reasonable something is.
I work fulltime as a Systems Engineer and I am also studying Cyber Security and Forensics part time. I also have a wife and I ride dirtbikes on weekends and have a social life. Still trying to fit in and learn GoDOt (their own proprietary language as well) , will take me a long long time before I can put out a proper playable game.
The quickest ways I found to make the games I have in my head (2D) is Construct > Fusion > Stencyl> Gamemaker > Unity > Unreal > GoDot > BlitzMax > C# > C++
So if time is more important than money (same with me) I don't see how GoDot or C++ etc is going to save you time.
If exporting or running on different platforms with speed is the main concern then I think Gamemaker, Unity and even Fusion is your best bet I suppose.
I'm going for Web, Steam, (PC, Mac and Linux) and Xbox. PS4 has a very difficult process to get into the indie side and they don't seem to be very open. Wii U... pointless for me at this stage to spend resources. Switch...that's the one I feel would be awesome to have an export for Construct...probably won't happen for the same reasons Wii U doesnt work. very poor HTML5.
Phones for me is nice to have but don't really care. The market is saturated and they don't want to pay. Although I can see using it for smallish games. But then C3 should do fine.
I must admit none of this has anything to do with the Renting model though...
This is now about tech choice and export options.
