  • great looking game. dunno if i was doing it right but against the boss enemies, it felt like i was just pounding them endlessly with my weapons and hoping they blew up before i did. combat could be a bit deeper

  • my two have already come up. so i second the recommendations for gamasutra and extra credits.

i think i'll try some of the other suggestions for myself too

  • I don't have anything super helpful here since it's a personal decision, I only ask that you please, for the love of god, stay away from the words "Monkey" and "Pixel". I can't take it any more! There's probably even a Monkey Pixel out there... (googling...) Yup. There's a game called Monkey Pixels and a company called Pixel Monkeys. Please help put a stop to this! </mostly joking></not really>

words people think are random that really aren't:

    monkey

    cheese

    duck

    turnip

    purple monkey dishwasher

    stay away from cliches

  • Try Construct 3

  • feels good bro don't it?

  • i'd find a a way to track the mouse positions at the beginning of the throw and on realease, and time the interval between the two. this should allow you to find the speed and angle of release, then feed that information into the physics object.

sorry i can't be any more help without trying to build it myself, but have a play around to see if this works.

  • i'm happy using numbers for yes/no variables. but in some circumstances boolean is all you. if something is either one thing or another, and it's never going to change than why not use boolean.

  • what stage is you company at?

as someone who was involved in the creation and running of a company (my family's swimming pool company, not games related but some principals are the same) i know it can be hard trying to come up with a name that you'll be trading under for a long time. we spent a long time arguing and throwing ideas around, but we realised that until we went to register the company name it didn't really matter.

what i'm trying to say is, if your company is in the early stages, there are more important things to worry about. yes a good name is useful for a games company, you want something to be proud of that gamers and your developer peers can associate with the quality of your game.

once you have a product and are ready to go to market, then is a good time to pick a name, and by then you and your team (if you have one) will have a wealth of experiences making the game to draw upon for name ideas,

this is all assuming that you are in the early stages of making the company. either way i'd suggest you pick something meaningful to you, maybe an inside joke or an idea or phase that came about during the development.

  • sounds like an awesome idea. We could participate with the one game a month site, or do our own version, or both

it's be nice for the community here to pick a theme each month and everyone work on it and share results.

i'd suggest that rather than the theme being something specific like portculis (it kind of ties your ideas to a castle setting) it should be something more abstract to encourage innovation and variety.

i'd suggest a theme like parenthood, or the unknown, i dunno, just not something that's gonna produce a bunch of different castle games.

  • I had a run in today with some people who, i am convinced are running a scam by offering education and qualifications in games design/testing/development etc. they were very pushy and pressured me into agreeing to a visit by a rep at my own home. I got suspicious and did some digging, i rang them back and they sent me this website to try and reassure me

    train2gamenewbies.co.uk

which looks like a crudely made clone of train2game.com

I pressed them further, accusing them of being a scam but they hung up on me. I don't expect to hear more from them, they probably know when a fish isn't biting. so if anyone has a similar experience, be careful, and if in doubt, walk away, and be sure you trust a company/website before giving them any details, especially bank details, and don't let them pressure you into something if you are unsure

    All this got me thinking:

    is train2game a legit educator?

do game developers care about a qualification verified by TIGA?

if legit, would it be worth studying with them?

or am i better off just doing what i have been doing: reading whatever i can about game design and learning/developing with construct2, unity etc

    thanks guys

  • big thanks to everyone involved with the manual, had a good session going through it all and had many moments of "ahhhh, that could be useful for that problem i had"

  • Hello Construct people

I'm Tom, known online often as Fluke939 (fluke for short) or Obi-Brown. I live in Chesterfield, England

I've loved games most of my life, my first memory of gaming was a snooker game on the commodore 64, running up and down the stairs to ask my dad which colour ball to pot next.

I always dreamt of getting into the games industry. So in the last few years with my career going nowhere, earning very little money I decided to do something about following my dream and started teaching myself about games development. I've dabbled in; Unity, Blender, writing, concept art and most recently, Construct 2. I'm become most interested in game design, so the ease with which you can start making games in construct should take away the barrier of learning a whole complex language. Really in just a few days of playing around, I'm amazed at the complexity of what i can create, meaning I will soon be making whole games hopefully.

My friend got me into construct, he found out about it in a college course on games development, we were going to do the course together but i couldn't afford it. Then since I was all about the design/writing/art side of games and he was learning the programming/modeling side at college, we collaborated for a while, but other commitments meant we had to abandon that for a while, (also our first project was too ambitious and i think he got put off)

so now here i am, trying to "do it all myself" and happy to have found a piece of software like construct to make it less of a burden.

For now, i'm happy making little playthings and learning about the software and getting better at making stuff.

my short term goal is to start making decent games so i can share it with you guys and be more of a part of the community

longer term goals will be to buy a licence, make quality games, develop a portfolio, and who knows what the future may hold, in my fantasies i make the next minecraft or angry birds. but realistically, i'd just like to be able to get a job in the industry and pay the bills.
