    Is there a way to download the 'sound files' when you open a game, and play them from the hard drive ?

  • You don't really need to change, but you WILL have more options! There's a difference :)

    I just installed FF5, and it is miles quicker playing that simple sound test.

    I didnt take into consideration was the fact that i am only using a 'Broadband dongle' which will slow things anyway, but FF5 deff faster.

    Using FF5 on XP.

    There is a very slight delay - microseconds, but hard to accurately quantify - but certainly not 1.5 secs. That's very slow!

  • I did the following conversion test with a wav file:

    Original (wav)    232 KB

    Convert to MP3    41 KB

    Convert to OGG    32 KB

    Convert to M4A    26 KB

    Like you say, if your games got 10-20 sound effects, it's a massive difference.

    I also made an example with C2r50 and uploaded it to Dropbox, just a basic 'click on a square' to play sound thing.

    Using my current browser (Chrome..XP), i get about a 1.5 second delay, so i think its time to try another browser.

    After Internet Explorer.....which browser would you recomend as the best alternative to Chrome ?

    It only converts WAV(PCM) files.

    Audacity is probably the best and easiest to use.

    It converts WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, MP3 and a few others.

    Audacity 1.3 beta (Support for AAC format) (Free)

    Audacity 1.2 cannot import or export AC3, AMR(NB), M4A, WMA or most other proprietary file formats due to licensing and patent restrictions.

    However, the Beta 1.3 version of Audacity can import or export these and many additional formats, if you install the optional FFmpeg library.

    FFmpeg also allows Audacity to import audio from video files. Note that on Mac, Audacity Beta has built-in support for M4A import without installing FFmpeg, using the QuickTime components supplied by the operating system.

    VLC Player-VideoLAN Client (Free)

    With the VLC player, you can enjoy your AAC audio files quickly. The player directly supports AAC decoding without the need for DirectShow filters or special codecs to be installed. If you are looking for a quick solution then this is certainly it, but if you want to look at other examples of these players or learn to play with Windows Media Player and store it in your Media Library.

    Another Player with Direct Support for FLAC

    One of the most excellent audio players and converters available is Foobar 2000. It is available as a free download from AfterDawn and it natively supports the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format. It also will allow you to easily convert it to another format or edit the tag information.

    AAC was promoted as the successor to MP3 for audio coding at medium to high bitrates. When compared side-by-side, AAC proves itself worthy of replacing MP3 as the new Internet audio standard the advantages over MP3 are:

    * Support for multichannel audio, providing up to 48 full frequency channels.

    * Higher resolution audio, yielding sampling rates up to 96 kHz.

    AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, is often considered to be the successor of the MP3 format. This may be true in the market for legal downloads, but not really for music file sharing. However, the AAC format is also used with video (used with MP4 & 3GP container) and it does provide better audio quality than MP3, keeping the bitrate lower. This makes AAC a suitable audio format for portable players like iPods.

  • If you downloaded the 3 level test, you may have spotted a problem with it...it didnt work!

    I have removed it and replaced it with a 4 level working example...I spent all morning testing it, so it will (should) work.

  • This is a test game made with the Match3 maker( only 3 levels )

    The game should loop back to level 1, when level 3 is cleared, and the 'switch back' should work (thanks Pixelrebirth)

    The first level is a normal timed round.

    The second level involves getting 8 'bombs' to the bottom of the screen(timed)

    The third level is a 'breakout' game.(timed)

    There is actually a few more levels (ROJOhounds) card match, and a memory game but i disabled the groups because they

    need a bit of work.

    Hopefully this 3 level test should run ok, but there's bound to be something that ive missed.

    Notes:

    The 'Help button' isnt working, the 'pause' button doesnt stop the music.

    Ive not included the actual game maker with this download, because its not finished yet and its about 8 meg ! !.

    The next version of the game maker will allow you to import your own Game Logo and change the game 'playing loop' as well as the stuff previously mentioned.

    If you download it, please let me know whats not working, or what you think is good or bad about it.

    WHOOPS, Ive just spotted a couple of errors.

    The timer for level one is set to 2000 instead of 3000.

    The last level stops with 1 brick remaining, and it doesn't trigger level 1.

    If you haven't already downloaded the example..wait and i will fix it....sorry.

  • Maybe add a random value to the ball.y when the ball.y before impact is the same after impact with a wall, if you get my drift.

    I seem to remember such games as Arkanoid would sometimes do the same but would then veer off after a certain number of bounces.

    Good idea...I just added the following and it works ok:

    + ball5: On collision between ball5 and wall

    + ball5: Angle Less than 14

    + ball5: Angle Greater than 346

       -> ball5: Set angle to ball5.Angle-20

    + ball5: On collision between ball5 and wall

    + ball5: Angle Less than 194

    + ball5: Angle Greater than 166

    -> ball5: Set angle to ball5.Angle-20

  • Anyone ever made a basic breakout type game.

    4 walls, 1 paddle, and a ball with ball behaviour.

    Sometimes the ball can get stuck in a sort of side to side loop as shown in the pic.

    Could somebody tell me how to stop this happening ?

    These are my settings for the ball:

    Randomness          20

    Bounce friction    off

    Rotate object       off

    Bounc off solids yes

    Rotation              N angles

    Rotation count     8

    I did a search, but the links to the example files dont work.

  • In my game i currently use:

    Set X to Window.X-(Items.Width)-10 (to hide the list boxes)

    Set X Window.ClientX+24   (to reposition the list boxes)

    This WORKS fine.....but if i want to drag the game window to another position, the listboxes reappear on the left edge and move across the screen as i am dragging the window?

    I have the game window set to position (0,0) on start of layout.

    my game is 800x600

    my display is 1024x768
