Sound Effects - Where to find?

Just wondering if you guys know where to find nice quality sound effects. I don't mind paying, but I prefer free sounds. I've found some free sound banks on the net, however the quality of the sounds tend to be very poor.

Also, I would create the sounds myself if I know how to do that. I know about the SFXR software, but I'm not interested in 8-bits style sounds. I'm more into the super nintedo style (16 bits).
