  • Hey All,

We have been wanting to start a thread that would be centered around best practices for creating Shmups, Shoot-em-ups, STGs etc.

Would love to hear from people who have had a go at creating them, thoughts on best practices with C2 etc.

Also we have a Game Jam (of sorts) running all the way through 2015.

    **UPDATES**

    Wave 04 has been completed!

    Check out the games here..

We have updated compilation images for the work created in jams 1-4. Many Construct 2 game entries within these.

    Jam Idea

We hope this will be the first jam of many focused on shmup creation.

For the first jam the theme is the origins of the genre - think Space Invaders, Galaxian etc.

This is to start us off easy as we consider an attempt at a shmup a month for 2015.

There is a little more information on the jam page.

The rules are fairly open for this jam.. it's not really a competition, just for fun.

Create something retro looking, modernise a classic.. If you find yourself with a free weekend, perhaps simplicity could be the key to getting in a quick submission.

You have a whole month per jam, so plenty of time.

If you are into this genre, or simply just want to give it a go, we'd love to see you there.

You might also check out our Shmup community over on deviant art the Shmuproom, which has all kinds of inspiration on it too.

Post in the comments if there is any interest on this.. or this may well end up being a solo jam. <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy">

    About Us

We are Buko-Studios we create graphics and games professionally, and we invite anyone with an interest in shmup action games to join along with us on this Jam.

We will be offering some help where we can, with some guides, and our thoughts for creating a classic style shmup.

  • Sounds cool, might be a great way to warm up before a bigger project. I have been preparing some tools just for this sort of thing.

  • Somebody Yeah us too!

We have dabbled in several prototypes with shmup mechanics so it will be a great opportunity to consolidate some of our designs and release some of the ideas.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Hey all, there are still 2 days left to sneak in an entry on the

    ShmupJam 01.

Plenty of time to bosh together a classically inspired Shmup!

You could use the project ‘template: Top-down shooter’ to get you started..

But, getting the basics down can be done from scratch with just a couple of sprites and behaviours.

Would love to see a few more submissions showing some support for C2.

    Cheers all!

  • Although not part of this Jam - I made the following over the 48 hours of the Global Game Jam last weekend...

    http://grimbarian.itch.io/ion-insectum

I love the shmup genre too, always want to try new ideas in it - so for the jam the shooter I did could also be completed (if you choose) without firing a single bullet... Even the Boss battle (if you choose the run away option that is!)

Will check out your game as soon as I can.

  • Only just noticed this thread

Will try and get something done for this first one although less than 2 days may be pushing it for me

but will definitely get involved in the next one if not

  • Grimbarian That's really cool! Nice replayability with the branching story, and the boss concept is a neat design. Lots of potential there.

If you package it up into a zip you could easily put that in on the current ShmupJam page! We'll feature it on our list as well!

DARTH Crusher Still 35 hours left! Bags o Time!

    - Thanks - it needs a lot more to be a full game, but it's one I will take further forward as I enjoy it and most people that have played it have too. I'll zip it up tonight and drop it on the page.

  • Should have a working space invaders clone done in time for the jam

    will add polish afterwards
