  • Hello,

as mentioned in my earlier post, Construct 3 was lagging and freezing up when working with a gaming laptop. After many tests with no improvement, I returned it and am looking for another laptop that will work better. I'm wondering anyone uses a laptop for working with construct 3 and has any references on what works best for them. I'm looking to spend under $700 and am a Windows user.

    Thanks!

  • I do use a laptop occasionally but I've not had any of the issues you mentioned in the other thread. Although my laptop also costs 3x as much as you want to spend, but I don't think that's the issue.

I could imagine that the issues arose due to laptops being often quite aggressive in terms of power-saving, especially when running on battery. They often start to underclock everything and most laptops come with two graphics chips nowadays and you have to specifically tell it to use the powerful chip instead of the onboard one which usually is just enough to run the most basic graphics stuff.

I can't really give any specific recommendations. There's more to it like size/weight preferences, how much you plan on traveling etc. I personally have an MSI, but realistically Construct should work well on pretty much any random laptop that isn't ancient.

  • Try Construct 3

  • I've been using Construct on 5 different laptops in the past years - three of them had Intel processors (5-10th gen) and two AMD Ryzen 7.

I can tell that Intel integrated graphics is noticeably slower than AMD, and generally runs hotter. But if you are working on small projects, there probably won't be much difference.

My current everyday laptop is a Ryzen 7 5700U ultrabook with 32 GB RAM. It can easily handle C3 projects that are gigabytes in size.

I can also confirm that C3 runs smoothly on a gaming laptop (Ryzen 7 + RTX 2060).

  • Thanks for the fast replies WackyToaster and dop2000.

dop2000 My project is medium sized and I definitely will want a laptop that can handle bigger projects so I will look into laptops with the AMD graphics card (which is pretty common) as well as having more RAM.

  • I will look into laptops with the AMD graphics card

Sorry, I didn't mean a dedicated AMD card. I meant the Radeon graphics which is integrated with Ryzen processors. It's more than capable for light gaming, will probably handle 99% of Construct projects.

But if you are making a game which is heavy on graphics, you can look for a laptop with dedicated GPU.

Having more RAM is a must.. Chrome now simply crashes with "out of memory" error when I try to open our project on computer with less than 24GB RAM. I'm worried I will need 48 or 64 gigs some day.

I'll keep this in mind when looking around for a laptop.

As for the RAM I'll definitely will look for something that has at least 16GB.

I knew that was what I had wanted at least, so I'll keep looking around for something that has a good amount of memory that will fit my needs.
