HTML5 Game Development from the Ground Up with Construct 2 [Print Replica] [Kindle Edition]

    Roberto Dillon

Does anyone have this book? If you do what is it like? Does it really explain things well? Is it worth it?

  • There are many good tutorials on here for free, covers all the things you need to make a good game with C2. The rest is up to you, trial and error and a lot of hard work.

So honestly I don't think C2 needs a guide book, its simplicity and the open nature of the tutorials from Scirra means its not as difficult to pick up, even for a novice.

I am always open to any sort of criticism and bad reviews, especially if supported by constructive feedback, but I wish people wouldn't dismiss someone's work without really knowing what that work is actually about...

A lot of effort was actually put in making this not only a book about step by step tutorials but also about illustrating what works and what doesn't in designing a game and where to start in the design process. That's what the "from the ground up" means in the title and this was actually the reason why the book was published by CRC Press: they liked the idea of having both aspects covered to add value to the overall book while other publishers I talked to were only interested in the tutorial side of things and thought that anything else would be useless. I disagreed with that and actually rejected a much better contract since I really didn't want to write a tutorial only kind of book, exactly to avoid comments like those by Silverforce (with which I tend to agree, actually).

Now, there are excellent online tutorials here and on other websites to learn making games in C2 that you should definitely study but, if you prefer to read from a printed page and also learn how to "think" about game design to start crafting your own game ideas following a reliable methodology, in C2 as well as any other engine you may learn in future, I trust you will find something worth your time there.

    Cheers!

  • The more documentation we have about Construct 2, the better. Even more if it branches out to game-design and how to make good games. I've never actually read any books on construct 2, and I follow tutorials as I need them, but I always feel like I should. This is the first time I hear about a book based on Construct 2... might have to take a look at it.

Good to have the author on the forums, too.

  • Tutorial about "how to make good games" that should be interesting...

  • I like books. I'll check this out.

online tutorials are good as well but I'd also like to have some books to check out.

    Thanks for sharing

  • We have gone from zero to where we are now with no paid-for tutorials.

  • Hi, I bought this book a while back, and on the whole I think it does a pretty good job of introducing the basics and would recommend it to beginners. Yes, you can find pretty much everything you need in the tutorials and manual, but often having a well structured collation of the fundamentals that you can work through systematically is a much more efficient way to get a solid grounding. Nice work roberto!

  • I checked out the book at amazon.co.uk.

The problem for me, is the price. 28.50 British pounds, seems a rather too high price for a book containing 237 pages. There are also no reviews for this book, which can be a decision problem. I am sure, based on the look inside option, that the author spend a lot of time creating this masterpiece. For me the price is not so important, the content is.

I used the "Look inside" option and found out that the book is clearly written, with a lot of visuals which makes the topics easy to understand. The amount of pages contained in the "Look inside" option is very fair.

If you can afford the high price, this book is surely a very good buy. Tutorials are a great way to learn but mostly they lack indepth information, which is not the intention of a tutorial. I am sure this book is a very good in combination with using tutorials. Surely, this book will not let you down.

I did not know any books existed about Construct 2, so I am considering buying the paper version of this book.

My end conclusion : a worthwhile 28.50 pounds for a very informative book clearly written.

Edit : after I submitted this post I was checking amazon.de and found out that this book receives three "four" stars and one "five" star reviews. I read those reviews and they confirm my opinion above, this is an excellent work!!!
