• Multiplayer signalling server — Now for sale in the Scirra Store!

    https://www.scirra.com/store/game-making-tools/multiplayer-signalling-server-161

The official Scirra Multiplayer Signalling Server helps peers using the Construct 2 Multiplayer object find and connect to each other. The signalling server does not relay any actual game data: it merely relays connection details so that peers can make direct connections to each other, and the actual gameplay data travels over those peer-to-peer connections, not via the signalling server. As a result bandwidth requirements should be minimal. For more information about the architecture of the multiplayer engine, see: scirra.com/tutorials/892/multiplayer-tutorial-1-concepts%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EScirra hosts a free official signalling server at wss://multiplayer.scirra.com, running on a high-end dedicated server with a gigabit connection. If this is suitable for your needs, you do not need to run your own signalling server. You may also prefer to rely on the official server if you are not prepared to also run a dedicated server with an SSL certificate, which normally involves additional fees.

The signalling server is based on node.js and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.

You may also wish to consider:

    • having a publicly reachable server with a direct connection to the Internet (without using Network Address Translation)
    • purchasing an SSL certificate to encrypt the connection to the signalling server, which improves connectivity for some devices
    • also hosting a TURN server (separate server software required) to improve connectivity for peers where STUN cannot achieve connectivity, e.g. symmetric NAT

The signalling server can work with none of the above, but the percentage of users who can successfully connect to the server across the Internet may be reduced. The signalling server can also be used offline on local area networks (LANs) where no SSL certificate or STUN/TURN servers are necessary.

The purchase is a license to run a single signalling server. If you wish to run multiple signalling servers concurrently, additional purchases must be made.

A lot of what is being discussed here and feedback we've received does makes sense, which is why we're delaying the launch of the addons category until we can sit down and properly rethink it from the beginning. Right from the start it's been a contentious aspect of the store.

Honestly I do feel bad about this as I know time was put into the pages and the beta. I really do, and for that I'm sorry. However, if you have made a plugin and associated services ready to sell, you are of course able to sell it on your own website and we're OK with people reasonably promoting websites and plugins on our forum.

Plugins have slightly more complex dynamics and implications which we basically didn't give enough thought to during the initial development.

Noncentz705 we've emailed everyone that's uploaded to let them know what we're doing.

I appreciate you and others have spent time working on the addons. We do plan to launch these categories in the future but we need to think about them a little more and add some more features to them before we are comfortable doing so.

I really am sorry if this is a big disappointment so close to launch, but they are categories we do want to support in the future.

Fimbul and anyone reading, we've spent a lot of time thinking about it and we're not going to launch the Addons section for the initial store launch. We will think about it more, work on it more and open it up in the future.

  • Uploaded following changes:

    • Fixed a few bugs with editing post permitting posting of links
    • Fixed bugs allowing linking with images
    • Installed Akismet back on to help with spam protection

Let's see how this goes. New users should now not be able to post any clickable links at all. CAPTCHA is on registration, and email verification is required. Hopefully these inconveniences are enough for them to stop.

Surprised they keep signing up, I think it's a human spam farm as they bypass the CAPTCHA no problem.

  • Also just a note, we now have a CAPTCHA form so if any are getting through it's likely a human spam farm of some sort.

  • Sorry guys, I know it's been bad for a while and I shouldn't be relying on volunteers to clean it all up. I'll spend some time tomorrow adding in new features to reduce the amount of spam. Since we've put the new forum online I've realised Akismet is no longer running on it, and there appears to be a couple of problems with new users being allowed to post links.
