  • Sorry for the lack of journal updates. :p

    Today I became a windows developer, I used the creditcard of a good friend of mine. I'll just switch the creditcard as soon as Mine arrives.

    I'm planning on submitting the game on friday,

    What needs to get done before that is:

    • implement share score feature
    • implement background art (spawning trees, mountains etc)
    • live tile, snap view etc
    • title screen
    • sound fx
    • some more particle fx

    Most of that is general polish, but It needs to be done right! :)

    It's a very basic game but I think it's fun to play. I'm going to continue work on it after the contest and implement upgrades, achievements etc.

  • Very productive indeed! I love the art so far. How do you plan on animating that though, all manually drawn, tweening?

    I'm going to heavily rely on ingame motion to bring the characters to life. Due to the time limits I used a little trick, all of the enemies are in vehicles. This allows me to make frame by frame animations by just moving some vehicle parts around. <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Day 4 and 5

    The last 2 days have been very productive. :)

    I've managed to make some assets and build the basic gameplay in construct. About that, I've switched to a more simple game design. I'm now making rocketbunny into a kick the turtle style game.

    Although I've got the basic gameplay down in C2, I'm still worried I'm not going get the level of polish I want in time for the contest.

    While on the topic of the development process, Construct 2 amazes me yet again. Super fast 'programming', you just get sh*t done in no-time.

    Personally I think it came out great! Never having done anything in this style before, I'm really pleased with how good it looks. Also how it takes a lot less time to make something look good in this style.

    As far as art style is concerned I'm very pleased, exploring this style was a very good idea! :D

    Tommorow I'll focus on creating as many art assets as possible. Ah weekend, finally!

    Day 2

    Day 2 of the rocketbunny development process.

    Today I'm not going to get much done on the game, at the moment I'm at work. As soon as I'm done with that, it's of to family for Sinterklaas celebration.

    It's tedious and it's going to take all evening.

    So I'm afraid the only things I'll get done today are some planning and maybe some more sketches.

    In this thread, I'll track my progress on rocketbunny, the game I'm making for the scirra windows 8 game contest. (https://www.scirra.com/blog/104/new-windows-8-game-competition)

    It's a shame I saw the blog entry a day after it was posted. It's an awesome contest, but I have no C2 projects I can just polish and publish.

    I'll have to make something from scratch in the next few days, and it's going to be a though challenge to create a quality game in such a short time.

    Thankfully I have enough game idea's for at least 10 years, so I can get started right away! :)

    So I have some work to do:

    • think of a game concept
    • make the game art
    • do the 'coding' in C2
    • polish the game and add sound

    and not game related:

    • get windows 8
    • create a MS devloper account
    • build and publish the game

    Day 1

    Gameplay:

    It's the first day of development on rocketbunny, I have this idea in my head of a rabbit strapped to a rocket.

    The game will be touch/mouse controlled, and the bunny basically flies towards your finger.

    If you stop touching, the rocket pack on his back will stop, thus the rabbit will los altitude.

    When you get near enemies, targeting hud elements will appear over them. When you touch these elements, you'll activate the jetpack overdrive and bunny will divebomb into them.

    Destroying them in the process. This is my twist on the standard 2d dogfight airplane game.

    I have only 6-7 days I can work on this, I have work on 3 of these. So the idea needs to stay simple, I'll leave it as it is for now.

    Story:

    Bunny needs to protect rabbitland from the evil rat-proffessor and his robot's. The end.

    Style:

    One of my personal goals for this contest is to try out a new style of graphics.

    Currently almost all of my work looks like this:

    Black outline, fill it with color and add some shading.

    I've done tons of it and I really want to do something new.

    Something more like this:

    Flat shaded, gradients, vectorish.

    Let's see where this goes.

    Bumps in the road

    So far I've already run into 1 problem,

    You need a credit card to register as a microsoft developer. I don't have one.

    I quickly ordered one from my bank, but that might take up to 2 weeks. The only thing I can do now is hope for my credit card to arrive in time, or register with a credit card from a friend (if that's even possible) and change the info when I get my own CC.

  • Ah just the origin point then.

    I'm using this to create a 2 frame walking animation that makes the character go up and down as he walks, in r100 the origin point is limited and the animation is gone.

    The only way to get the same result would be to import an image with extra transparency reserved for the origin point. :/

  • I'd just like to point out that in the just released R100 build I still can't place origin/image points outside of the sprite bounding box.

    Until this is fixed I'll have to keep developing in r95 which is kind of a bummer since r100 is so feature packed.

  • I've experienced Construct 2 as blazing fast.

    This runs at 60fps on my 2 year old desktop.

    I'm working on projects at the moment which are more graphically intense and still run like a charm (in web-browsers).

    If you're really serious about using the scirra tools to make a full fledged game I strongly suggest using C2. You might only think about desktop publishing now. But what if you change your mind in mid development?

    Is the extra bit of performance you might gain by using Construct Classic worth it, if you can only deploy to one platform versus basically every platform with C2?

    Anyway that's my 2 cents.

  • I'll start working on some mockups soon I guess. I just discovered Construct and I'm loving it, so it's a nice way to give something back to the people behind it.

    I was looking for work to fill my portfolio anyway.
