  • When I bought Construct 2 I was happy with the Personal licence and all the updates which where for free. I found it indeed very generous all those free updates.

There are many models in the Scirra C3 subscription and surely you will find the right one for you. Only the sun comes up freely.

I really do not understand why people still make such problems about the subscription model. Take it the other way around, if you sell a game you worked on for more than a year. Would you like Scirra also give the next updates for free? Are you also working for free?

  • I also read the blog post about the event sheets features.

Nice to see we can print out our eventsheets in C3. Thank you Scirra!!!

  • Please people, be nice to each other. Everybody has the right of their own opinions.

I am in several subscription models which is not a problem for me. I read that many people have negative feelings about the subscription model and from their point of view, they can be correct or not.

However, a subscription model can also have many positive effects :

The software company behind the subscription model gets more resources to add new features. They also have to listen more to their customer base, because when they neglect feature requests or bug fixes too often, they loose customers.

In a subscription model, companies have to deliver a quality product. Also at least one major upgrade a year is necessary for the subscription to stay succesfull.

I am using Kotobee Author (interactive ebook creation tool) in the basic subscription model (100 USD/year) which gives you 1 year free updates. Nobody there is complaining because it is a superb tool with regular updates within a year. In return for your subscription, Kotobee people are listening and specially interested in the requests and feedback from their userbase. For example, you can contact them and within hours you have your reply. We should expect the same excellent service from Scirra.

C3 working in a browser is a big plus for me, however I am using FireFox and be very reluctant for security reasons of my privacy, using Chrome.

Why not give C3 a chance? If you have a present licence, it is half price for the first year. Lets see during that first year how C3 performs and if Scirra can keep up with new features and user requests. If after one year, you are not satisfied, you can still choose another game development tool.

There is also a monthly subscription model, which fit the needs of a hobbyist with limited finances. You can let say pay for April, not using it in May (in this case no subscription is paid) and then take a new monthly subscription for June.

In my personal opinion, I find the yearly subscription model very affordable but again, I respect when you think different.

C2 despite it shortcomings, is a very good game development tool, both for beginners and experienced users. Even our daughter of 8 can enjoy it. We are creating a Mancala game which is the oldest board game in the world and coming from Africa (my home is in Gaborone Botswana Africa). I am surprised how easy she find her way in the C2 event sheets.

Regretfully for her, I am not always in Botswana because my work is in Belgium. With C3 which is browser based, she can also work with C3 when I am not there, using another licence. From an educational point of view, this will be a very interesting situation for her because now she will also learn how to work over the internet.

I am afraid positivity is somewhere getting lost in all the negativity. Many people are afraid of change, and sometimes with good reason. However, in this case I am sure we are looking into a very bright future for Construct. Scirra was groundbreaking by using HTML5 years ago, and I am sure they will be groundbreaking again.

Always keep an open mind for new developments.

  • We also cannot print event sheets in Construct 2. Just like you this is a feature I would gladly see becoming available in Construct 3.

What I do, is using FastStone ScreenCapture and make a screen capture which I print to a physical printer or Nitro PDF creator.

FastStone has an option to print your screen even when parts fall off the visible area. It also let you record your actions on screen, which can be very handy.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • I read the blog this afternoon about the "sprite and animations" editor in C3 and got very excited about it. We cannot deny the fact that there are many improvements over C2.

Using Construct 3 in a browser alone will be a true bargain for me. Nothing to install and you can work at every computer with internet.

I am sure over the next months, there will come a lot of new exciting announcements from Scirra. Can't wait!!!

  • Please accept my apology, somewhere along the line I was misunderstanding.

My former post was about a Drawing tablet which has nothing to do with the tablets mentioned here.

  • I am using a Wacom Intuos Medium Comic touch tablet. You can draw anything easy with a cordless pen. You can also use your fingers to move around. Especially with brushes and the pressure sensitivity it is a very nice tool.

For a lot of other activities, you can also use such kind of tablets. Just see it as a big mouse.

Last year I had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome operations at each hand. There where complications with my left hand so it was (and still is) difficult for me to use a computer. I bought this tablet a few months ago and have no regrets about it. It really helps me being creative again without too much pain.

I also use it with Construct 2 especially with selection lists, sprite animation dialog, moving things.

    Very practical and helpfull

  • Maybe for most Construct users, using C3 locally is not an issue. However when you are like myself and regularly on the move it is nice when you can open C3 on every computer with internet with your account.

When I move from Belgium to my home in Gaborone Botswana, I am almost 48 hours on my way. Since I have Construct 2, I used it along the way to create a game based on my experiences and impressions along the way. When I arrive in Botswana, I let our little one try it and finish the details.

Browser based has more advantages than disadvantages. You always use the latest version, no more installing on your local computer. And when the internet is no longer good enough, C3 switch to the offline edition without bothering you, so you can work on.

Users never own the software, even with local runtimes. a licence grant you the use of that software to be creative. It is a common misunderstanding by many people, once they pay for a licence, they own it. That is not true

  • The new subscription model is what it is and we have to respect that Scirra decision. Like somebody else wrote, most members here are not used to this kind of model.

I do not believe Scirra is aiming with C3 to hardcore game developers. I do make small games for our small daughter of 8. She even gives away those games to her friends. Other activities will cover for the subscription cost each year, which is not a problem.

When 99 USD each year is really too much, then maybe a monthly fee of lets say 12 USD will get you over the line? In this way, you do not have to pay 99 USD at once and you can skip your subscription for months you are not using C3.

That was only my idea, like I would have done it if I was in Scirra's place. But as a normal user, I have to respect the new subscription model, which in my opinion, will work.

I think a lot of young people with limited financial resources are using Scirra and if this is true, I can only be very positive about the fact that they improve their creativity this way. In my opinion, Scirra should take that group in serious consideration because they are the developers of tomorrow.

Lets wait and see when the first public betas are released. Don't let fears ruling your game development life.

  • Buildbox is also a subscription model, you pay 99 USD or 84 USD each month.

Scirra subscription model cost 99 USD a year which is something more than 8 USD a month.

Please stop moaning about the new Scirra subscription model, it is very fairly priced and give Scirra more resources to maintain and update the software.

  • To give you an example of another company who has a subsription model.

I am developing also with Xojo a Rapid Application Development tool. Here are the licence fees for one year :

    Desktop Lite : 99 USD / year

    Desktop Full : 299 USD / year

    WEB : 299 USD / year

IOS : 299 USD / year (not worth because of the bugs and limitations)

    PRO : 699 USD / year

    Enterprise : 1999 USD / year

These values are without VAT. If you need to pay VAT, you have to add the VAT amount to the above numbers.

Believe me, Desktop Lite, is very limited. With Desktop Full you can only compile for one platform. If you need to compile for more platforms, you need the PRO version.

If you do not pay your licence anymore, you can no longer update or compile once it is expired. However if you update once your licence expired, you can still use their free version but it is limited. If you choose not to update, you can still compile with the last version your licence covers.

I do not hear people there complaining about the yearly subscription. You can compare Scirra with Xojo inc. I also pay my licence fee to Xojo inc. I do not find it a risk.

We all have to get paid to make a living. It is not different with Scirra. Still I believe the future for Scirra and Construct looks bright. No other game development tool uses the Construct futuristic approach for creating games by events and behaviours.

Like the Scirra people explained, they where way ahead of their time to use HTML5, Construct 2 is already its time way ahead and now with Construct 3 around the corner, I am sure we did not see the last of it.

Keep up the good work Scirra !!!

  • Indeed, situations as with Adobe Director are a disadvantage of subscription based licensing models.

However, remember that there is also an offline version which will continue to work. I asume that as a cool game developer, you not only store your projects in the cloud but also on your own backup disks.

This mean, there is no risk at all. In case Scirra end development of Construct or they stop being in busines, there will be time enough to seek another solution.

Anyway, even with the local Construct 2, if Scirra ended development, you also would be in trouble because very soon Construct 2 would have become outdated.

Support for consoles like Xbox, PlayStation... needs to be realised in the future.

People can change from Construct 2 to Gamemaker, Unity or anything else. However when you changed and your new platform also change to the subscription model, it is even worse. Think about that!

When you develop games in Construct 2, I do not find it wise to change for the reason of the subscription model. Also for current license holders of Construct 2, there is a discounted subscription fee for the first year. I think it was 42$ instead of 99$.

There will also be a free Construct 3 edition but with severe limitations.

When I see concerns as explained by Helena, believe me, when you setup a proper backup structure, they are unnecessary. Remember again, you have Construct2 (which will keep working) and you have the offline version of Construct 3 and as a smart developer you backup your projects also to a backup disk. What can go wrong then?

    Edit :

Please read the message of the original poster by clicking the link below. It is very long but very well written.

  • Great post and I read if from the start to the ending.

I completely agree with your opinion, could not have said it better.

Believe me, the way we create games with Construct is unique. This is the future of game development and Scirra is way ahead the competition.

With the new subscription model, we all can participate in our favourite game development tool Construct. HTML5 was indeed a very good choice.

  • The subscription model will secure Scirra's future and give them more resources to permanently improve Construct.

I am much more positive about Construct future with the subscription model than with a life time licensing system.

One drawback of the subscription model is that developers will become more demanding about adding new features and improvements. But that is the challenge the Scirra team has to accept.

The world of game development is moving fast. What is high tech today is outdated tomorrow. With this model, Scirra can stay on par with that moving rate.

I like the more positive attitude of the community here towards the new subscription model. Believe me, this will be an improvement for us all.

  • The idea of a live preview will be very interesting and I hope Scirra already implemented it, or will implement it in a future release of Construct 3.
