  • Hi everyone,

I'm working on a video game according to the specs of the Nintendo Gameboy Color. The original hardware uses up to a 32x32 grid of 8x8 tiles to form the background image. Each tile can have up to 4 colors.

My question is would it be more efficient, performance-wise, to create a single 256x256 background image matching this spec (creating the tiles in something like PyxelEdit and exporting the full image,) or would creating the background with 32x32 separate tiles work better? Or is the performance difference negligible between the two methods? I should mention this game will NOT be released as a mobile game; PC only.

File size could potentially be smaller with the tile-based approach, but it would also increase the amount of sprites on the screen which could possibly cause some slowdowns.

    I appreciate your help!

    Thanks :)

  • Here's a new screenshot from Those 8-Bit NerdZ - The Video Game.

The entire game is supposed to take place inside a famous handheld (gbc) so I'm doing my best to make it fit the specs. Everything from sprite sizes, color counts, sounds.. everything! I still have some tweaks to do. This screenshot is still not within spec...

One thing is for sure though, I'm having a blast learning Construct 2 :)!

  • Have you guys considered looking into MonoDevelop? That might be one way to support Windows, Mac, and Linux with one codebase.

  • I'm at work so I only had a couple of minutes to sneak through the first level. I like what I played though! Good job! :)

  • Try Construct 3

Those 8-Bit NerdZ - The Video Game.

    Hey everybody,

My girlfriend Amanda and I are making a game based on her cartoon characters. The NerdZ have been sucked into ManderZ's Gameboy Color. Playing the game as herself, It's up to ManderZ to save the NerdZ from the evil Glitch.

I'm still new to Construct 2 (and pixel art, and game design!) so this screenshot is more of a test than anything. If you're interested, you can find Amanda's "Those 8-Bit NerdZ" artwork here: those8bitnerdz.com

    Thanks!

  • Hey everybody!

My name is Dustin. I'm new to Construct 2, but thanks to Yann and Kyatric's awesome videos and the great beginner tutorials on the website, I've already got a head start on this awesome platform :)!

Normally I code VST plugins (www.sleepytimedsp.com ...shameless plug haha), but I'm taking some time to feed my gamer side. Construct 2 is definitely a blast so far! I can't afford a personal license just yet, but I'll be pushing the free version to its limits until then.

Anyway, nice to meet all of you! I'll be snooping around here learning as much as I can.

See you around the message board,

    -Dustin
