Well, that doesn't seem to affect anything, which is why I'm asking here - I suppose the ideal way would be if we could just deal with all objects by UID - pick this by UID and place behind this, picked by UID.

Yeah it can be a real pain not being able to do it that way.

+1 for Chipmunk. It has loads of very useful features although it wouldnt hurt to impliment Box2D in full.

Pater & Canvas too.

Well really its up to you. Do whatever feels most comfortable. There will be no difference in performance either way. I created a 100 level game with just one event sheet.

Why not use a layer and alter its opacity.

Put a detector sprite at each point you want to snap to. Make it as large as you need eg. 70px. Use the drag and drop behavior on your animations then check that the dropped sprite overlaps the detector. If it does set the sprite x,y to the centre of the detector. Then run your animation.
