  • I just completed week 4 of 6 of the Gamification course you tipped us off to. It's been really outstanding, and will definitely not be the last Coursera class I take.

The only problem I've run into is that part of your grade is a result peer assessments, and if you wind up with a non-native English speaker, or an individual with poor reading comprehension or critical reasoning skills, you can lose points without cause. Overall, though, quite valuable. Thanks!

  • There are 185 tutorials at present, with 10 per page, each accompanied by about four lines of description, plus associated tags, social options, etc.

I like all that data, and the previews, but I feel like it would be good to be able to see more at once in a smaller space, and perhaps sortable by topic (not necessarily mandatorily sorted) like Rory said. Maybe the preview descriptions could be collapsed to begin with, but expand on a click?

[Edit: Ok, whoops, I just clicked the All Tutorials Page, and that's great, but how about we put the tutorial rating by each of those, and enable sorting it by tag/overarching-topic, etc.?]

  • If you can post a brief demo with stand-in graphics, your design document, and a list of the art assets you'll need done, maybe potential artists will have a better idea whether your project's a good fit for their time, style, and ability.

  • You're welcome, DravenX, and thanks for the kind words, Knudsen. I'm going to start combing the Help Wanted forum for more active Scirra members, but it would help tremendously if people keep posting +requests or PM me.

  • You're welcome, kenli. =) DravenX, I added your site and then decided to customize a couple Scirra badges to highlight our own community members.

  • I wondered if somehow the date system had been spoofed, but the actual bug blocking you from participating but giving you mad rep in your failure is a lot funnier. =)

I can't help but try to figure system interactions out, but I'm most excited about learning enough of using C2 to answer someone else's question for the first time, making a game which gives someone a few happy minutes, and writing a useful tutorial or two.

A number of my friends participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in November. I will have just graduated from college, and I'm going to have an unofficial "NaGaWriMo." Guess the "Ga..." =P

  • Hah! And, searching the Rep list for accounts to audit, I found one user with 162 Devotee Badges, who crammed 1,620 days into a 202-day-old account which was last active 120 days ago. So, if the user was active for 82 days, that's a max of 7 legit badges (since I believe you have to lose a day to reset the clock), but instead racked up 20/day. Maybe they just got 20 times more use out of the site than typical. =P

  • I've now vetted all of the original suggestions from the Scirra forums, and added a number of my own. Thanks to everyone for your input (and debugdesign, you'll see I added the store to the list -- nice work!), and please continue to add to the list! I'll keep updating as I run into promising leads.

    Cheers,

    RE

  • Ahhh, you're right! So, he gets three more points for comments, giving him 175. Assuming he has no upvotes, and since I couldn't find a tutorial for him, that means the C2 license is 180.

Applying that to me, then ...

I find it more likely that the License Rep would be 150, rather than 180, which might mean MelVin has 30 Unexplained points of his own (although they may be comment upvotes which haven't reached the threshold for a badge).

I don't believe I have upvotes, so I may have 268 Unexplained Rep. I'd try to calculate yours, Kyatric, but ... =)

  • I love the simple but engaging gameplay of AirScape. I agree it would be cool if the graphics were spiffed up, but they didn't turn me off as they are, and I like the smooth transitions between landing screen to control screen, etc.

  • Thanks, Karzay. I've used something similar for home maintenance, called ServiceMagic. As someone who's looking for a pro, I appreciate the site's rating system, the ability to compare prices, and the site's pre-vetting of contractors. As a random homeowner, I'm not really competent to comb through thousands of contractors to determine who does the best work for the best price. Since I'm paying them for a service the technical aspects of which I may not be familiar with, I need to be able to trust that I'm not being cheated, and the rating and review system allows me to do that.

I've paid for a contractor who wasn't the low bidder on several occasions, because I wanted one with a higher rating I could trust. Cheap people will tend to get more poorly skilled contractors, but ones with outstanding ratings can often afford to charge more because people like me need to know that I'm going to pay once for a job done right.

When it comes time for me to hire an artist (I'm a writer/designer), it's going to work the same way. I hope I can pay an artist a wage I can afford and they're satisfied with. I've been going through dozens of sites on my Site List: Graphic Artist thread here, and without some sort of rating/review system and pre-vetting by the administrators, I feel like finding the right artist would be a Sisyphean task.

I get what you're saying about the contrast with Ebay, where the "clients" bid up a starting quote, as opposed to Guru or ServiceMagic where contractors submit quotes for comparison and the client can negotiate. On the other hand, I'm an Ebay sniper, and I'll bid a low price I think is fair on hundreds of auctions for a month to snag that one fluke low score.

In your or other artists' opinions, what would you consider a fair price for each of the following, in a style similar to Braid:

    o 1280x600 detailed junglescape background for a side-scroller

    o 120x60 static shrub

o 60x60 5-frame walk animation for main character

o 60x60 30 second, 25fps animation for cut scene for main character

o 600x480 splash screen, 3 second, 25fps with simple company logo animated

And on top of that, for purposes of this thread, what do you find that people actually pay on bidding versus freelance sites?

  • If you count up almost anyone's theoretical point totals for badges and add forum post points, you'll see they don't align. The stated points for badges and behaviors doesn't actually match points awarded. You, for example, have:

    Authentic: 25

    Commentator: 25

    Forum User: 25

    Hello World!: 25

    RTFM: 25

    Updater: 25

    Forum Posts: 11x2=22

I would expect, just based on public points values, for you to have 172 rep. Right now you show at 355. You can do the same with mine, and I've noticed that I often get more points for a badge than listed on the badge page.
