  • I see, I was under the assumption that the player was carrying the lantern.

So, is the lantern(s) stationary relative to the obstacles?

If so, then you can still use the advice I gave you, but instead of having it update every tick, it would only be run once; that is unless you have moving objects or the player be lit up by the lantern(s).

  • You could have the value (brightness) of obstacles be at zero when outside of the lantern's range, then the value will be increased to normal level as it moves closer within range.

The background would also have to be black (or whatever colour you have the obstacles fade from) if you want the obstacles to be unseen to the player before they become lit by the lantern.

  • I'm creating a program that generates character traits for a text based RPG/simulation game.

It doesn't contain much content as I'm just figuring out how events and whatnot snap together, in fact, I've just figured out how to use else properly.

I know a fair bit about math and probability so I don't see much challenge so far outside of implementing equations and ideas properly.

The game will be set in a galaxy where multiple intelligent races are connected via interstellar trade and technology.

I will eventually have a generator for each race, which I want to have done by the end of next month, then I'll get started on generating other aspects of the game, and then I'll get started on the actual game.

As mentioned in the title, the name is subject to change. This is due to the fact that the game will evolve from character generator into a fully fledged and fleshed out space trading simulator, and it will go through several phases between now and the end product.

  • I've been fiddling around with Construct recently and I've came upon a stumbling block, the rather limited text tools.

For the average game, this would be fine; however, I plan on creating a rather text-heavy game. It seems that the current text entry doesn't allow paragraphs, so I decided to import text from an external source, which would also help me organize the various pieces of text easier.

But now I can't figure out how to put the contents of a text file into the game.

I'd be okay with using JSON or XML if it helps.

    Help, please?
