  • Initially, I was going to try to learn how to make platformers with Construct 2, but this tutorial's art assets require purchasing the program. :/ They should make those assets free for those who are considering the idea of buying the program but want to use that tutorial first.

    Edit-

Clickteam Fusion's iOS, Android, and HTML5 exporters do not interest me, so I'll probably never buy any of those.

  • Since Clickteam Fusion is $24.99 right now for eight hours, I decided to get it. If Scirra wants to be more competitive with Clickteam right now, they might want to consider having more competitive prices now that Clickteam's products are becoming more affordable with their pricing. I'm open minded about getting Construct 2 as well at some point at the right price range. I was initially hopeful they would offer a great deal during the Steam sales, but that has not happened so far.

  • I was leaning toward Construct 2, but if "Utilities - Animation & Modeling" wins in less than 7 and a half hours during the Steam sales, Clickteam Fusion will be $25 for eight hours. That price is insane. Any chance Scirra might have a sale either on their site or Steam sometime soon?

  • If I were to buy Construct 2 at some point, what advantages and disadvantages are there to using the Steam version? Also, I'm disappointed to see Construct 2 isn't on sale during the Steam summer sales.

  • I figured out the problem. My sound card was set to 24bit, 192000 Hz in the audio settings and changing that to 16bit, 48000 Hz fixed all of my performance issues with that game. Now I have no audio issues playing your game and it runs fluidly. In all my years of having this expensive sound card, I never had any idea those higher settings caused performance issues until today. -_-

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • OK, so that's not a graphics issue then. Hmm, interesting! Must be a CPU or RAM problem... and one of the downsides of C2 is that it's not very easy to tell! I'm puzzled that this only happens on your machine though - it must happen on at least some others...

Since the engine is young, I'm bound to run into issues like this making a large game, since the limits of the engine haven't been run into that much over its lifetime. Definitely consider that when making your decision, but also keep in mind that Scirra are very helpful and it could be much better a year or two from now.

If you were on my situation, would you gamble on the hope that performance issues like this hopefully won't be a big problem in the future or go with a program that's more likely not to result in issues like that (such as Clickteam Fusion)?

For comparisons sake I ran the game smooth as butter on a 5 year old laptop with poor ventilation and a 13 tab Chrome browser plus various programs open in the background (Photoshop, Word, PowerPoint etc.) and the audio was fine, as was the frame rate.

    The only issues I had:

The game froze twice, once for about a second and a second time for 4 seconds, after which I stopped playing and noticed the temperature was at egg-frying levels.

Plugging in my (admittedly 3rd party) 360 pad part way through the game didn't work, although restarting the program worked fine!

...What could be causing me these issues then? O_O Like is there something related to HTML5 I should download? It sounds like I shouldn't be having these issues at all. My DualShock 4 using ControllerMax works perfectly fine with this game btw.

  • OK, thanks for the feedback!

I haven't been able to test on a wide variety of machines so it's good to hear if it's having problems.

Choppy audio you say? Interesting. I wonder if that's caused by the performance in general, or is its own issue.

Did reducing the resolution help at all? That would at least narrow down if it's a CPU issue or something else.

My machine seems to be similar (but without a dedicated GPU) and it runs perfectly.

I initially played the game at the highest settings, but I just tested it in 480p and I still experience very choppy audio along with random moments of slowdown.

  • Node-Webkit should perform identically to Chrome.

You could always download our demo at http://www.airscapegame.com to see the performance of a platformer using node-webkit export for yourself.

So I just played the first six levels from this demo. That was some of the choppiest audio issues I've ever experienced with a game that wasn't run on an emulator and I frequently dealt with massive slowdowns for short periods of time. These are my specs.

I should not be having these type of problems with my machine for that type of game. Now I'm even more concerned about Construct 2's performance issues than I was before. I was learning toward using Construct 2, but now I'm not so sure because of how your game ran for me. Like your game's performance was so annoying that I'll never consider buying it unless those issues are resolved which is a shame because you have a really cool game.

  • After reading a bunch of posts in this thread, it made me concerned about how HTML5 was limiting Construct 2's overall potential. But if it's capable of something like that ReVeN game you linked, I'm nowhere near as concerned as I was fiften minutes ago. Still, I made a thread here and on Clickteam's forum, and the latest post in that thread claims someone "tried making a tower defense game in Construct 2 but it started chugging with only a few enemies," where as in Fusion, he could have over a thousand enemies. o_O I'm hearing trash-talking about Fusion on this forum and trash-talking about Construct 2 on Clickteam's forum, and it leaves me confused on what's my best option. At this point, it sounds like Construct 2's logic system and interface is easier to learn than Clickteam's product, but HTML5 might be a problem. I don't know. I'm hearing conflicting statements from various people and it leaves me confused. Do Construct 2 games generally perform a lot better with Node-webkit than on a web browser?

  • So how much does HTML5 limit Construct 2's overall potential? It seems like Construct 2's largest criticisms have to do with its reliance on HTML5 and its lack of native exporters. The type of games I want to make would be large games so that's a huge concern of mine.

  • Well, that's great to hear Construct 2 can do nearly anything Construct Classic could do and a lot more. How would guys compare Clickteam Fusion's capabilities to what's possible in Construct 2? Also, do you guys think it's likely that the PS4 and Xbox One will eventually be able to support Construct 2?

  • Less than a few years ago, I made a similar topic back when Construct 2 was in far earlier stages than it's in now. [LINK] I tried making games with Construct Classic, but due to the lack of tutorials and the fact it was essentially a discontinued product, I lost interest in ever using Construct Classic. However, I noticed Construct 2 has better community support nowadays and it's way further along in development. Is Construct 2 currently capable of making games like

? I haven't seen anything made for Construct 2 that looks anywhere near as impressive as that game.

I'm looking for a visual scripting program to make pixelated action platformers and I'm thinking about using Construct 2, Clickteam Fusion, Unreal Engine 4, or possibly a different program. My experience with programming is limited and I'm not very good at it. What advantages and disadvantages does Construct 2 have compared to Clickteam Fusion and Construct Classic? Also, does anyone here know if Unreal Engine 4 is a good choice for making pixelated action platformers? It seems like it's more capable than the other programs I mentioned, but it also sounds like a resource hog with games which might result in ridiculous computer requirements to run pixelated action games. That, and I'm worried about the skill level required to make good games with that engine along with the much higher longterm price tag from the subscription model.
