  • It would be nice if someone forked the code and created a competing GPLed project, though that would require someone with some skill and dedication towards it and considering this is a niche project there isn't much of a chance of that happening.

In any case, the code that has been released is GPL and always will be GPL. The developers can't take that back, the GPL was specifically designed in order to prevent such a thing from occurring. They can create their own fork with all the code which they explicitly own and relicense it but that doesn't have any effect on the previously available code.

  • Well this kills any enthusiasm I had for the project, so much for donating.

HTML5 would have been the best option as the baseline exporter since the code it generates is pretty much open and relatively unobfuscated, which would allow a good codebase to work on to create new exporters. I'm not sure what other exporter could be considered to be a baseline or if you're even considering to develop an open source exporter at all.

This hobbles development of third party exporters significantly, good for your bottom line, not so much for hobbyists. Having third party exporters would have allowed ports to more non-mainstream systems such as the Dingoo and Gamepark linux-based handhelds which wouldn't be able to run interpreted code at a decent speed. I find it highly unlikely that you would find the resources to create exporters for less popular and therefore less profitable systems.

Of course the poll is just an empty gesture, I doubt the results of it would sway your opinion one way or another since once a project starts seriously considering going down a closed path it's basically a done deal.

  • [quote:1taco795]Plans for C2 include cross platform support, but it may only be to one specific platform other than windows.

    'm guessing linux? Or OSX?

[quote:1taco795]I'm pretty sure the devs don't have a software renderer planned.

Well the idea I'm putting forward would need more than just a software renderer anyway.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • This is a rather chunky request, but whatever.

I like Construct's interface (even if it's a derivitave of Clickteam's software interfaces) and I think it would be great to be able to use it for cross platform development of SNES/Genesis era-style games. That is 320x240 max resolution, tilemaps and the like. Still with a Python backend but with a more generalized software renderer capable of running on multiple platforms (even low spec stuff like GP2X, Dingoo, some mobile phones).

It would basically require a fork, but I think it would be incredibly useful since it's still a niche that is yet to be exploited.
