  • Here's a piece o' me. Those of you that visit TIGSource may have already seen this pic.

My second little entry for Poppenkast's 1 Hour Tragic Compo. I was supposed to make this game within one hour, but I had a little trouble with some stuff once again, so once I got to the two hour line, I decided that I may as well go back and make some of the graphics a bit more attractive than they were... I tried to go as fast as I could, really I did! The game had to relate to the word "tragic". I'd tell you how it relates to that word, but I don't want to spoil the tragedy. (Wow, what a lame joke.)

Try to avoid the flying growing rocks of doom!

GameCake still isn't working, so I uploaded the game to willhostforfood. You can download it here: Click me!

    Controls:

    Escape ~ Quit

Hold Left Mouse Button ~ Fly

R (on the ending score screen) ~ Play Again

Edit: Don't press the "R" key (to play the game again) during the room transition between the playing field (after the bird dies) and the ending score screen, 'cause the game will freeze up. There isn't any way for me to fix that other than just taking out the transition animation altogether, because it seems to be a little glitch in Construct itself. So yeah, just wait for the circular transition to finish before hitting "R".

  • I already commented on Poppenkast, but I'll post my comment here as well:

"Pretty fun, and I like the effects. It's a little frustrating when the character gets stuck on the walls."

I'd also just like to say that this is really good for your third Construct game; you managed to pull off some stuff I've been trying to do (but I'm still learning slowly...). Great job.

  • Glad you like it! Yeah, I love being able to use my own ideas whether other people like it or not, it gives me a sense of freedom. LOL

  • Thanks!

  • Sorry for the topic title looking so spammy, but the title of my game is:

Curiosity is Going to Get the Better of Me in a Tragic Way of Some Kind

    <img src="http://fc30.deviantart.com/fs45/f/2009/092/b/5/b56906da7a459e7b328d10d9c400ebdb.png">

This is just a very VERY short game I made for Poppenkast's 1 Hour Tragic Compo. I was supposed to make this game within one hour, but it took me a lot longer (3 hours) because I tend to be rather slow as it is, and I'm still not experienced enough to really whip these little games together like some. But I tried to keep it as simple as I could to cut back on some of the time usage, so please don't expect the artwork to be at my usual level or anything.

GameCake is currently down, so I had to use willhostforfood to host the game. Download it here: Click me!

Also, the controls are the following:

    Arrow keys to move.

    Z to jump.

    Escape to quit.

  • i dig the art. is your avatar from your own game? looks like it may fit in

Took me a while to respond to this since I had momentarily forgotten my login info. :/

Anyway, glad you like the style, and no, my avatar was from a former Game Maker project that I didn't have the skill to finish. So I guess that means I'll just have to make it with Construct some time!

  • Not to revive an old topic or anything, but just wanted to say "Thanks for this example David! It's really helped me understand how this works. "

  • So how did you make this btw? Did you use the timeline object or lots and lots of events?

Lots and lots of events... I haven't even tried the timeline object yet.

  • Alright guys, I'll try this stuff out. I can't finish my noir project without the speech bubbles, so hopefully my brain will kick in, eh? Thanks for helping.

  • This may be a bit much to ask for, but I really need some help, or an example (.cap) of how to set up custom sprite speech bubbles that resize automatically according to the structure of the shown text. And for that matter, how to get the text from an array, and go to the next text line within the array by pressing a button or something.

If this is too much to ask for, I'll just resort to making some huge sprite animation of a speech bubble using different frames for the text. LOL

  • Haha! Maybe pressing the arrow keys will help you make it on time, eh?

Once again, thanks for the comments! (Now to move on to something hopefully more worthwhile. LOL)

  • Thanks for the great comments guys. I really wasn't expecting such good feedback for my first game, so I'm very pleased and thankful for your kind support.

  • SoldjahBoy: Thanks! You're not the first one to say that the dude reminds you of yourself. LOL Kyn on TIGSource said the same thing. x3

Stainsor: He's feeling so rotten, he'll go on barfing for as long as your computer lives!
