  • Hi gizmodude4,

If you are an iOS developer, you can download iOS 8 beta 5 and test your game on it right now if you want.

Try checking your collision polygons for both the character and box. If they have an odd shape, they might be catching. Just double click on the sprite and select the polygon icon in the editor. If the character is animated, check the collision polygons for each frame too.

Thank you! I've already started working on the next version. If you have any suggestions for improving my game, I'd love to hear them.

Thank you for the reply and the information about PhoneGap. I didn't know about the blog post. I'll read further into it.

Since 89% of iOS users (according to Apple) are using the most current version, PhoneGap might be the way to go when iOS 8 is released. Providing everyone chooses to upgrade. If I remember correctly, iOS 8 will run on an iPad2 and iPhone 4s.

  • I thought Scirra was working to improve the Ejecta plugin, but now it seems they are throwing their support behind PhoneGap with the latest Beta build. Which is better for iOS? Can anyone explain the differences between them?

  • Hi Everyone,

My first game was just released on iOS! It's a simple game where you are a bird with a sock and you try to avoid the envious flock that tries to make you drop it. Thankfully, you can use your sock to fight back and sock it to them!

It's completely free! There's no ads or IAP. Early adopters get 100 free in-game coins toward unlocking different socks. Please give it a try and let me know what you think.

  • The salary range for a game artist is somewhere around $20-$60/an hour based on skill and experience. Lead artists make up the higher end of that range. Art Directors can make more.

I like liaeb's advice. Decide what your time is worth, then figure out how long it takes you to complete assignments, and charge based on that.

  • It's up to the individual to decide for themsleves what art is. If you connect with it and you feel it's art, then it is. That doesn't mean it's "art" to everyone, because they may not connect with it in the same way as you or at all. You wouldn't tell someone their favorite color isn't blue. In the same way, you can't tell someone what art is to them. Art is subjective.

  • Thank you very much! I've read through a lot of your tutorials and forum posts. I'm looking forward to viewing your class. :)

  • OlivierC - Oh, I was meaning the effect of the light coming from the windows being displayed on the floor sorry ^^ Is that an effect you made or part of the image?

It looks like a static image. The room is created using a 1 point perspective and the light source is above the window on the right. Once you establish where the light source is going to be, you use the shape of the window to determine what light is allowed to touch the room and the objects in it.

I hope you don't mind that I posted a screenshot of you work. I'm following along with the discussion and I love discussing art. If you disapprove, I'll remove the image.

  • The analog sticks were off center. The controls work great now. I really like your idea for the jump mechanic. That's a clever idea to use additional overlapping sprites to trigger it. Thank you for your help!

  • A found a great 8-direction analog stick example and I tried to adapt it for a Platform game. It works for the most part, except for 2 issues.

    1) As soon as the game loads, the player takes off in a sprint.

    2) The player jumps way too easy and sometimes when you don't want him to.

After you use the touch controls, the analog sticks seems to work fine except for the jumping. I spent a lot of time trying to get it fixed, but nothing I do seems to work. Can someone tell me what is wrong and explain why it's wrong?

  • That makes sense. It was a bit confusing because so many threads point to this one, but it's discouraged to comment on it.

  • Whiteclaws or anyone,

Why is it wrong to bump old threads by asking questions or sharing examples? I see people complaining about asking questions that have already been asked in old threads, but then there are people who complain if you comment on those old threads. What am I missing, because it seem like a catch 22.

  • Tutorials would be a good start, and I can always make my own curriculum once I learn enough. I was just curious what others are doing and the pace they are setting for students. I might have missed the link when I first posted about this, but it looks like Scirra teamed up with Stride Academy. I'll take a look at it. :)
