  • Okay, I got it right this time, it's awesome, could use a bit of refining, but alas I've worked all day on it. I don't think I'll up another example after this. This ledge hanging experiment is part of a bigger project. I always had trouble with ledges, but I was able to do this in a day's time thanks to C2.

In my final upload, I have an area where you can walk or run around and grab ledges. They're a bit tricky at times, but it's all doable.

Let me know what you think!

    Hold X to run

Hold SHIFT to grab onto a ledge (only when falling)

Hit "Up" while grabbing a ledge to climb it.

  • The scrolling I can live without, basic scrolling techniques are fine for this game, I have a method I used in MMF for keeping it between the two objects, so I'll try that eventually.

For now, however, it should be noted that I'm not quite sure as to why the animation won't change back to Idle after the falling. I've played around a bit, wiped out a bit of code that wasn't needed, things are still stable, but that one error...I might have to write out everything I have on paper.

  • Thanks for the help guys, I woke up at 5:30 AM and it's almost 9:30 PM now, and this is the only thing I've worked on all day. I finally got it down, but if someone has a method of making the camera more smooth, please let me in on it.

Also, when this is run in scaled full screen, it doesn't always position the person properly. I think most of the trouble I had with this whole scenario was pulling my hair out over and over, then finding out the full screen was buggy as all get out. I admit this is a complicated feat I'm embarking upon, but hopefully C2 and HTML5 will be along well enough to produce good results with what I have currently.

  • I saw a post in CC forums about hanging on a ledge, but the thing is I can't seem to duplicate it in C2. I've taken out all the things I tried to duplicate and started a different method, which I can't go beyond because the player attaches only to one particular instance of the object it's colliding with, and not the ones it needs to.

If there are any examples, I'd be glad to check them out. Otherwise, if you want to take a look at what I have thus far and see if you can help me out on this, it would be very appreciated. Thank you!

    Thanks again,

  • I meant to say "higher resolution graphics." Sorry for the double post.

  • First and foremost, my name is Rory and it's good to be here. I enjoy working with these programs in hopes I might sell a decent game one day. So far it's been pushing my limits, relaxing, then pushing some more, and I hope Construct 2 can allow me to push even further. I use MMF2 Dev as well, and I can say that so far this is far easier to work with, and the HTML5 thing is brilliant!

I don't know if anyone has done this yet, but this guy who goes by Chumbucket has a wonderful character sprite sheet for platform games. I have taken the liberty of making the background invisible and creating a folder with all 71 of the sprite animation strips in it. The user of these sprites is free to apply any artistic expression they desire and distribute them without permission or credit. Personally I've always found this to be a good guide for designing higher graphics

  • Ah, thanks, I guess I should wake up more before randomly posting. :P

  • Try Construct 3

  • I bought the program, but under a different email address. How can I get the badge to show I bought it?

  • When I posted this pic, I was able to come back and download it in full. Now I can't seem to access it and it would be easier to get this pic than to do it all over again. Why won't it display the full image?

  • so...OGL it is then? It's been a while since I've been here, but I was just popping my head in to see what was up.

  • I have an issue where depending on which value the char is set to (o and 1 so far) and if NOTHING is pressed and value is 1, then the sprite needs to do the "standing sword" animation, which has like five or six frames that are already set to repeat. However, when the value is 1, the animation just sits there on one single frame and the animation isn't repeated... how does one fix this problem?

  • It would be nice then to see if someone can design a pixel shader to do it.

On that topic, is there any pixel shader that already is in construct that makes low res images look nicer and more smooth?

  • This whole discussion is widely overlooked though it's been so widely used in emulators for years. If they can do it in real time with emulators, why hasn't someone more tech savvy not tackled this?

I may want to learn python just to find a way to write a script. It makes games look way nicer and could be the deciding factor in the future of 2D gaming.

  • How about relabeling it "Import Sprite Sheet"?

  • Indeed, some of us draw as if we had no arms or right foot to speak of. These sprites are simply to give direction to where you wanna go with character design, even if it's simply for eyeballing.
