  • Maybe because marketing is an afterthought? No point thinking about marketing if there's nothing to advertise ;)

  • Since you worked on AAA games, I wouldn't have thought you'd find it hard to find a decent programmer, but good luck!

  • By the looks of the screenshot, chrisbobs used displacement or 3D boxes with textures, which aren't available in C2 unfortunately :(

  • Too drunk to solve this. If no one else does by tomorrow night, I'll check the capx out ;)

  • "We will be looking at the code quality"

I don't think this applies to us using Construct 2. Shame really. Sounds interesting though...

Although, I think this may be spam.. Feel free to prove me wrong on all accounts..

  • No problem. Hope all is working out for you! :)

  • Well, my pseudo 3D "engine" is nothing more than creating objects with a zPos, and scaling accordingly. I'm using the most basic 1/zPos formula to scale. 1 can be replaced by how big a sprite should be when zPos = 0.

    Simple but effective ;)

  • Sorry. I'm on an iPad right now so my concentration is limited, between the lack of physical keyboard and other stuff.

Apple has that effect you know ;p You have more than me. I can't even afford an iPad! Would you support any vague ideas I might have? ;)

Besides being a novice game developer, who admittedly doesn't understand things like arrays until maybe when he goes to school

You'll understand arrays better when yo go to school? You can understand arrays NOW. Damn, you don't know how easy you have it nowadays, what with the net and all. Back in the day, when I were a lad... by gum... we had to learn from others peoples' (usually uncommented) source code without someone holding our hands. You have knowledge at your fingertips man. You have people to hold your han... err help you. Take advantage of it!

I want a nice shiny new PC with a 27" monitor... what do you think my chances are of getting that without something to show? ;)

When you're at a level where you have something to show, people will believe in you and your ideas. Until then, keep practising, study hard, and put together something solid.

  • Prizes don't bother me at all. I'm enjoying learning C2 by doing things I wouldn't normally do, and challenges would motivate me, and increase my knowledge and experience.

I agree, finishing a game is damn hard. Starting is way too easy in comparison.

I've finished one game in my life, and even then I didn't consider it finished, but had to rush it out for a deadline. I didn't get the chance to polish it and add ideas that would've made it more complete in my eyes.

So I guess I would consider myself experienced in how hard it is to see a game through to completion.

Just because a game is finished, it doesn't mean the work is over. Creating a custom installer can take some time, especially if you've never done that kind of thing before. Then the website... and the marketing... and... ugh don't get me started ;p

Not that any of that would matter in a challenge...

I really hope we can get some sort of challenge going. Weekend challenges would be good as I know that's when people have the most time to work on stuff. Besides, that's my drinkie time, so creativity would be upped a few levels ;) but any time is fine by me!

  • um mate, that was in your original capx... I didn't add that ;p hahah

but yeah, dt is to make it run the same on all devices. Without dt, if you moved an object 10 pixels per second, on slower devices it may run 4 pixels per second and on faster devices it could run at 20 pps.

    DT Explained Very Well Here

  • A game jam is indeed a good idea. I'd love to work with other devs / artists / musicians. Kyatric made many good points about the flaws in this.

To be honest, I was confused when I first read the OP. I thought it was some gamejam elsewhere, but the $5 entry fee was a huge turn off. As Kyatric mentioned, why would I pay to enter this when I could enter many of the free ones elsewhere. There was no mention of what the prizes were to even make it worthwhile parting with any amount of cash, even if it is just $5 (~2.50?). That's a couple of cans of Scrumpy for me! ;p

  • Val, very true. I usually get to a point where I don't know what to do. Sometimes it's boredom working on the same thing with no real end goal, but mostly it's due to my lack of skills at a certain point.

I think I just love doing small prototypes. The good thing about unfinished projects (just like unfinished artwork), is you can look at them years down the line and feel motivated. I think reminiscing can help fuel motivation ;p Also, new ideas can surface from looking at older stuff, and skillset should be much higher than when it was abandoned.

Good idea on the challenge thing. It was done with Construct Classic, but I think it was abandoned because there wasn't that much interest. Shame really, 'cause it was great to see everyone's entries. I never entered because my skills with CC weren't that great tbh, but I'm much better with C2 than I ever was with CC so yeah, I'm in :)

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • You were using custom movement for the player, and could've used custom movement -> reverse on a collision, but it would look wrong.

Here's a modified physics version, with working flashy walls ;)

    OMEGA

Oh, I forgot to mention.. player around with the player's elasticity properties in the properties bar to control the bounce.

I also edited the collision polygon to be a triangle rather than a square.

  • webkit audio

Just a few lines of code. I had a look at the audio plugin code and I can see where it could fit in, but I'd need to learn my way around plugins so what would take an experienced plugin dev a few hours (if that), would probably take me a week or more ;p

Would it be possible to integrate that? I can imagine new possibilities opening up if we had access to the frequency data. Games based on music.. mmmm

  • Yeah I thought he meant dollmakers at first, but then he mentioned games. They're not classed as games are they? They can't be! No way! Surely not! ;p
