  • Whiteclaws lol at your knife example, I do remember you left C2 development to learn a language, looks like the the ride to hell and loss of sanity is due anytime soon... <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" /> I take it your doing OK with it?

I am not talking about a specific project here, from mega drive to dungeon crawler C2 has all the tools required to produce virtually any 2D game...but is java script running in layers capable enough to deal with the computations of game logic?

Arima, with node webkit "near native performance" is quoted, so is that near native C++ or near native Java script running on only the windows OS layer?

  • bertie Booster My comment was slightly tongue in cheek and the fact that we are talking about a console released over 25 years ago, just compounds the point...

I am fully aware of how the coding and hardware for the both systems is chalk and cheese, indeed laughable to think that a HTML5 game running on an i7 could not surpass that ancient arcitecture, but please I would love to see your rendition of Gunstar heroes...

Will you be posting it on the Scirra Arcade?

  • Couple of quotes from my original post will wrap this up for me, as we seem to be going in circles...but thanks for all the input...

"I think most devs on here are blind to the real capabilities of C2 as they are running fast gaming spec PC's, many still struggle to push 60 FPS in a game that a Sega mega drive could breeze..."

"Maybe Java script is just not upto the job, or maybe we are just making excuses..."

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Aphrodite Sorry I missed Your post earlier, C2 is a great engine and maybe your right that the focus should be on HTML5 performance in general, rather than C2 in particular...

So if that's the case who do we contact? ludei? Intel? Google? mozilla? Microsoft? ...

  • Juryiel I agree 100%, C2 needs in house exporters for the obvious offending platforms...

  • newt Your comment makes no sense, the "high spec gaming world" is the cutting edge backdrop that is perceived to be the norm...

The modern phone, tablet or mid range laptop would still probably not out perform My old desktop...

So you suggest we just wait until all hardware can run a C2 game well?

    Sounds familiar...

  • It under performs when set against the expectations of the end user in today's high spec gaming world...

I love the challenge of squeezing a few extra frames per second from a project by reworking a few events, I guess that's half the attraction for me, and I really appreciate the effort and passion the Scirra team have put into the C2 engine, I have seen it's performance improve leaps and bounds from it's early days...

But recently the engines core simplicity and compact size seems to be getting wieghed down, as more features are added, performance seems to be taking a nose dive...

  • lennaert is this turning into the "How do I" topic, mentioned in first post?

Your loyalty to C2 is commendable and I share it, but don't let the rose tinted glasses fog your judgement...C2 under performs on average spec hardware...

And yep, agreed background knowledge really helps, been working in the gaming / PC business for what, about 25 years now...

  • tgeorgemihai

There are many and varied game development tools out there, are you suggesting we should all drop game engines and go learn a language?

Not sure if Your advising me to upgrade my PC or My Operating system to windows 7, but don't waste ya breath, just tell those who buy your 20 meg web game, when it's running like a three legged donkey...

  • I'm not here to big up My "Rig" I know it's old, My point is that it's probably a fair average of what's out there being used, by ordinary folk..that You and I are making games for...

If I am having these problems, so will they, difference is they will not go chasing drivers and setting flags, they will be moaning about it to you and I...

  • Aphrodite it does not simulate web GL it does not recognise it,due to driver blacklisting so falls back to canvas 2D...

  • Ashley ,graphics card drivers upto date...

with XP I could not use internet explorer, so not something I'm in the habit of, will give it a go...

Just tried it on win 7 and I'm amazed it's running at 66FPS in canvas 2D...

Scratches head...it outperforms chrome and node webkit, both using web gl...

    any explanations?

  • Well as I said, I will plod on, for now...

2.5d Displays, is an old term obviously not used these days...

I expect it's the related to the "back to front rendering" that ashley refers to, as in all open windows are displaying their textures despite being covered by another window, where as I believe XP had to use software rendering to do this, and could cause a "dragging" effect as the GPU caught up with the window position when repositioned...

  • lennaert again, Your probably right, but there are millions of similar or even lower spec systems out there...

  • Arima I realise that when it comes to rendering, placed in a petri dish, C2 performs well, it's when you ask these objects to do something other than look pretty that things seem to go a bit pear shaped...

For simple games C2 performs great, but do fear for anyone developing anything remotely complex, when it reaches the end user with far lower spec than the Dev developed and intended it to be played on...

The chrome 32 update really has thrown the spanner in the works, and yes one of the cards was blacklisted, overcome with chrome//flags

As far as I am aware windows 7 supports and uses hardware rendering for 2.5D displays (desktop windows), and XP does not, so if what you say is true, I'd have expected increased performance on Windows 7, but, I am not 100% up on all the Tech regarding video cards, so bow to Your better knowledge on that...

To be honest My game is still performing as good as, if not better than most similar games, I have seen or played on the forums, it's just about acceptable, but I continue...

Looks like I'm as guilty as everyone else, when it comes to dropping My expectations as I add more game play elements...
